Beauty or spine: Dilemma of a writer

Thursday, 13 August 2015 - 6:05am IST Updated: Thursday, 13 August 2015 - 8:51am IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: dna | From the print edition

The film fraternity may pay lip service constantly to the 'Content is King' line but almost in all cases the budget for writing is less than one percent of the total cost of the filmmaking.

My favorite Writer v/s Producer story is when years ago, a yesteryear producer approached a writer for a screenplay. He agreed to her price after a bit of haggling but looked incredulous when she asked him for an advance.

"Why do you need an advance?" he shrieked. "There's no investment for you except paper and ink! You can take that from me!" Time has passed since then and the world is said to have improved but this attitude of looking at writers hasn't changed except marginally. The professionalism that seems to have seeped in is restricted to paperwork that makes writers sign away all their creative rights to the production houses. There are very few producers who accord you with the respect that is deserving while the rest send you long winding contracts which assume that you are being 'bought' along with your script!

The film fraternity may pay lip service constantly to the 'Content is King' line but almost in all cases the budget for writing is less than one percent of the total cost of the filmmaking. This disparity is mainly attributed to the star system in our country where film stars are paid ridiculous amounts of money to 'translate' on screen what the writers 'create'! It would be easy to assign the blame for this distortion on the film industry, but I think the fault lies largely with our culture that is still so obsessed with the superficial. We live in a country where sound often supersedes logic on popular news channels and trite one-liners pass off as humor in hit films. Is it then surprising then that most of the audiences in our country decide to watch a film on the basis of who's starring in it?

To me a film is a living breathing entity. And so, if we had to compare a movie to human anatomy then the film stars are the face, the director is the heart, the editor would be the brain and the cinematographer would be the eyes.

The writer, in my opinion, is the spine of the film! Since spine is not something that you encounter as soon as you meet a person, its importance is often relegated to the background! And since most people don't engage with movies except for 'entertainment' (which is now equated with unintelligence or frivolity), very rarely is good writing recognised! Things they say have changed, but I will only believe it the day I see good writers sharing the dais with filmmakers and film stars receiving equal applause and respect. Till then I guess the job of the spine will be to support the body silently!

Agree with him. Our industry doesn't give much respect to its writers and technicians - it is all about STARS. Even during the award shows, they barely get a chance to even say a Thank You speech 🤢I would rather listen to them than the overrated stars... who are constantly speaking before the filming, during the filming, after the filming... blah blah

The day writers start getting respect and MONEY we will greatly improve the quality of story, screenplay in our films. We have great directors and actors who can do amazing things with support from strong writers.

All of us agree that the CONTENT is the KING. So please start respecting the "CONTENT" enablers 😉

A lot of the success of Salim-Javed's revolution was undone post their split unfortunately. Fighting for equal/deserving pay is a reality in most industries, Bollywood is no different. The value of a good script is way more recognised today than it once was though so its a shame the disparity in pay/recognition still exists.

And I disagree with the line on people going to watch a film depending on who is in it. That doesn't hold true for a majority of the industry. Stars do have their BO pull but no one can carry a bad movie on their shoulders. Good films might not do well at times but which was the last really terrible movie which didn't star one of the three Khans and went on to become a Blockbuster?

Writer (Story) and Director are most important ingredients to make a really good film. Good actors are also needed to translate the vision of the director and writer onscreen but unfortunately all the credit for the hits, superhits, BBs etc goes to the star instead of dividing credit equally amongst all 3...

Salim-Javed used to get a lot of respect in the 70s as their screenplays always gave golden jubilees. But in recent times, thanks to star worship, star power is getting all credit for every BO success. Directors also get their share of fame and money but writers are pushed into the background.
Yet the lines these stars spout in their movies and get applause for, are all written by scriptwriter. Everybody tends to forget that.

@Jane

To reinforce your last point, even the Khans have realized to continue on their BO success trajectory of 600+, 700+ business going forward they will need backing of great content 😈

A good film in the end will always be remembered regardless of its BO success

^I do agree with you. I don't care much for 600/700cr records but I want them to utilise their star-power more effectively and make some really good cinema. They have the standing which can guarantee commercial successes to content-oriented films. Though the WOM these days is so powerful that these films are doing a lot better than they used to.

Of course, out-and-out entertainers have their own place and I am not against them at all. But I don't want them to only stick to that. Like you said, they're very in-the-moment and won't be remembered in the long run. If they want to sustain their starpower for the coming generation, they will have to strike a balance. We're enjoying Big B as much as our parents did but the Khans might become like Rajesh Khanna and Dharmendra for our kids. At 50, they're far more successful than Big B was but the result of whether they will be like him at 70 will depend on what they do now.

WORD!👍🏼
Really, If I were in the shoes of Salman and had that kind of BO power, I would so use that to further the cause of quality cinema. If people are going to watch me do anything, I would rather give them quality. Movies won't always be ATBB but atleast they will be successful ventures. And leave legacy behind... Tomorrow no one will remember how many trophies SRK has at home or how many mega hits he delivered, what they will remember is that he was awesome in CDI, SWADES etc.

But change takes time. Believe or faint, BB was the first Salman film I watched since probably 2000. Why did I avoid him? Because his cinema, was not my type. But I went to see BB with the reaction everywhere and I was pleasantly surprised as well. He was very likable and suited his role well.

Fortunately, they are realizing Aamir's success model which is about leaving legacy behind and also how small films (QUEEN, KAHAANI, EV) are being so loved and adored. They want some of that now 😆...

I can't wait for 2016 which is promising a great line-up across the board (big + small stars) etc. IF will be ultra busy next year.

Glad the heroines are making distinction among each other by supporting content oriented films and finding success. It is a ripple effect... 2-3 years ago, DP w'ldn't think twice before saying YES to star opposite a Khan but today she is valuing her role more (if Sultan rumors were indeed true). She clearly wants to establish herself as a bankable star actress. Same with PC.

Vidya and Kangana have made it clear regardless of BO success they won't do sub-standard roles. Fortunately, they got both and have earned themselves respect. 👍🏼 Regardless of how many flops they deliver in future, they will be always remembered among actresses who did quality work.

Without spine there would be no beauty as the human would not be able to stand straight!
Without a good script, even superstar cannot make a movie memorable in the long run.
Crappy movies might become hits but it will be just like fast food, unhealthy and tasteless.

@bold

Not Sultan. It's the Hrithik-YRF thread she is rumoured to have rejected because the role isn't that big.

Kangana rejected Sultan for Rangoon. But she said the role in Sultan is very good.
