I mean this logic can be applied to all directors then. Hirani is nothing without Sanjay/Aamir , Neeraj Pandey is nothing without Akshay, Aditya Chopra is nothing without SRK etc. Credit should be given where it is due both for Ajay and RS. Besides Ajay has given hits outside of RS OUATIM/SOS etc so its his choices in movies which cause them to flop not because RS is his lucky mascot.

Salman Khan

Akshay Kumar

Ajay Devgn

Sunny Deol (only in the Punjab-Western UP circuit and not in the last 5 years or so)

Sanjay Dutt (till a few years before his sasural yatra - he's a spent force like Sunny Deol now)

SRK and Aamir manage to do it for some films but not consistently.

That leaves the list of single screen bankable stars to merely 3 - Salman, Akki and Ajay and not one of the younger lot (except maybe Varun Dhawan) approaching the sort of mass appeal these 3 have.

Rohit Shetty wouldn't keep making film after film with Ajay Devgn if he didn't think that Ajay would be able to bring the audiences in - a director can only do so much. The problem with Ajay's flops is that they don't fit the genre his single screen audiences expect from him - give them a Singham and they'd happily watch it multiple times - the last thing they want from him is a U Me Aur Hum. Ajay just can't get away from his legacy as a stuntman's son, that's all.
