It's a challenge to replace an established character'

Television's affable star Hiten Tejwani might be on the verge of prime time 'death' in Ekta Kapoor's Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi but he diplomatically says, that his job begins and ends with following the script to the T.

Hiten, who's also often known in television circles as a replacement actor (he's replaced Manav Gohil in Kkusum , Sandeep Baswana in Kkoi Dil Mein Hai and Cezanne Khan in Kasauti Zindagi Kay ) has no ego hassles about replacing other actors at all. "It's a challenge for me to play a character that is established. I consider myself lucky to get such well known characters — to which the audience relates so well," he says.

Hiten, who started off his career in acting by doing street plays and television advertisements has been a Balaji loyalist ever since he started doing TV ( Ghar Ek Mandir, Kaahin Kisii Roz, Kesar, Kkavyanjali, Kkoi Dil Main Hai, Kkusum, Kutumb, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kasauti Zindagi Kay ).

Quiz about whether he wants to work with other production houses as well and he doesn't seem particularly keen. "An actor needs to work continuously and I get work 30 days in the month and good money too from this production house. Then why should I leave it?" he asks.

What about getting bored of doing the same thing over and over again? Hiten says, "The genre of the serials may be same but the roles that I am offered are different. And I love playing these characters."

Predictably Hiten, like a true professional has no qualms about sporting grey streaks in his hair and playing screen dad to contemporaries, "I am comfortable doing such roles. People know how old I am in real life. I believe in doing different roles, so it's fun sometimes."

After Nach Baliye , does he want to do any other reality shows? "It was a great experience working in Nach Baliye . I wouldn't mind doing a reality show in future but it should be a mixture of reality show and saas-bahu soap."

Hiten who's happily married to co-star Gauri Pradhan for four years, enjoys the female adulation and confesses that having a supportive spouse helps. "I am very lucky, as Gauri understands me completely."

For someone who's played major roles in films like Krishna Cottage, Joggers' Park and Anwar, movies aren't much of a priority. Unlike some of his colleagues who have moved on to films, Hiten is clear about wanting to be a part of the television industry and would do films only "if the role is good enough."

So where does he see himself in the rat race? "Frankly, I just come to the sets, complete my work and go away. I take life as it comes and am a chilled out kind of guy."
