My thoughts on Poonam telling Laakhan the truth

Hi guys, I am new here and have been reading the forum silently for a few weeks. I started watching the show recently because I was bored and it kinda reminded me of Game of Thrones and Poonam is sort of like Sansa Stark.
In this show, Poonam is the most realistic character for me. I mean, I completely do not agree with the decisions she made such as agreeing to marry Laakhan due to emotional manipulation by Badi Maa. I mean she has no self-preservation! You gotta be selfish Poonam. Love yourself girl! However, I am glad she told Laakhan the truth. I understand her decision. This girl has grown up in a very patriarchal world and her mom in early episodes told her just to compromise in her life and accept whatever her husband to be said. No wonder she felt the need to tell Laakhan the truth about her and Priyom. She probably felt she wasn't being a good and honest sanskaari wife. I also felt she explained herself well. Despite Laakhan being abusive, she probably thinks it is okay if he hurts her. I mean in a 2014 study, 51% women surveyed in India thought it was okay for a man to hit wife. So, for a fictional tv show set in small town, I am not surprised. What I want from Poonam is realization that she deserves to be respect ed and demand that from her husband, in-laws, everyone around her. I think it was telling that she stated that after marriage broke with Laakhan, the men in her life made the decisions. For once, I want Poonam to make a decision in her life on her own and live her life the way she wants. So yeah for me it is Poonam's journey of courage that would be the most interesting.
P.S: I hope to see Vishal in a positive role in the future. I like the actor, he has good screen presence. I wonder how CVs can redeem Laakhan as a character though. Laakhan is terrible as a person, although I completely enjoy him as an antagonist. He is not only abusive toward women, but he murdered a child and countless adults. Hard to redeem a guy who killed a kid cuz he was obsessed with a girl.

1stly welcome to the forum..n dear it is a tv serial.anything can happen at any time.this is not a goody goody show where crimes n all r not shown.yes it is a male dominating show.it is a raw rustic show.1stly laakhan is not 1st person in thakur family who killed people.begusarai started with the scene where BA phoolan n bhushan(as children) stopped a jeep in the middle of the road n try to steal them.that guy tried to save himself by snatching BA'S gun but phoolan came n cut his throat infront of his own children..they r not showing a place where crime=jail..phoolan himself established his empire through bloodshed n later he became the generous king.there is no police no court.yes laakhan is a drugdealer but phoolan is also a sand mafia..if mithilesh can b shown redeemed after his extra marital affair, behaviour towards maya n specially after he wanted to kill his own brother n father why cant laakhan??its just that laakhan is a lead thats why his redeemtion ll take time n ll happen after so many twists n turns

I dont think Mithilesh has been redeemed in any way. Maya is just another Poonam, who suffers her husband and his philandering ways because she sees no way out. Nobody hails Mithilesh has some kind of hero. This is a patriarchal setup doesnt mean we have to agree to what the men do. Phulan thakur might be whatever to the world, but he cares for the women in his family. My problem with Lakhan is not what crimes he does to the outside world. Its how he treats and has been treating Poonam since the beginning. He treats her like a personal property, a puppet who doesnt have her own will. I still cant forget her first time to college, how he was following her and how her expression changed from pure joy to torment. He always suffocated her with his presence. He has stalkerish, abusive behaviour towards her. No wonder she never fell in love with him. Poonam when she is with Priyom, she is a totally different woman. She can joke with him, fight with him, slap him, share her dreams with him. She is not even 10% of that with Lakhan. There she knows only fear and blabbering. But since she is a small town girl, there is no other way for her, just like Maya. She probably will never have courage to talk back to Lakhan Thakur. It is going to be a classic case of Stockholm syndrome. That is what saddens me about her character.

i disagree..if laakhan would hv been only selfish n treat poonam like furniture.he would hv never take poonam for pagphera specially after the way he said no to choti amma n vimla.that time noone told him anything to do he did that himself hearing poonam's words.even before he was the 1st person to bring the college form without anyone's recomendation,he is the person who brought those guys so that he can make poonam go to college again..people never cares abt their furtinure this much.he definitely cares abt poonam n respect too(if he wanted he could hv done zabardasti in his relation since she was all his) he always had one major issue of putting all the blame of his insult on poonam.thats where he needs to know that whatever happens is not poonam's fault n poonam is not any punching bag.n each n everytime it was always a instigation or other's fault for which lakhan had to suffer n made poonam suffer even more..he is no viraj he is no samrat.

Thank you for the welcome. You made some very valid points. I always welcome different viewpoints. They make me think and enjoy the show more. I agree that setting is very rustic and raw which is what I like and the Thakurs operate akin to Mafia. I also agree that they all have blood on their hand. I think with Laakhan, there is a lack of clear motivation in his actions other than him being obsessed with Poonam. Like as a viewer, I want to understand why he is acting like that. Presumably he grew up with his cousins but none of them are as bloodthirsty. Even with his mother being a bad influence, his dad seems fairly normal. Then why did he become so crazy? Why is he so obsessed with Poonam, what made him think she was his other than just plain male entitlement. There has to be more. With Phulan Thakur he took arms because he was hungry and also to protect his family. As a viewer, I can understand the motivation. Heck, even with Mithilesh, I understood his actions were out of jealousy and greed. Sadly Laakhan has been written poorly and hasn't had any growth. It is really due to Vishal's acting, the character has become charismatic. I think they need to flesh out the character more. Maybe it is due to that disconnect, I have a hard time seeing how CVs can redeem him in a way that is satisfactory to me as a viewer.

Thank you for the welcome. Yes, Vishal got great visuals and good acting chops. I don't mind a grey shaded character but Laakhan is just plain scary. I would love to see Vishal in romantic comedy. Maybe in movies? I hope so.

i have nothing to add, you summed it up well. I hope Poonam does have the courage to break away. I think her telling Laakhan the truth was very courageous. She just gotta respect herself more and not tolerate such behaviour. I mean she is already getting abused, she has nothing to lose if she speaks up. It is not like Laakhan is treating her better now. She needs to lose her fear. I hope the show doesn't normalize or romanticize an abusive relationship.
