Music composer A R Rahman has responded to the backlash surrounding his recent remarks on Bollywood, saying his comments were misunderstood and never intended to hurt anyone. The Oscar-winning musician issued a clarification through a video message shared on Instagram after his interview sparked a wider online debate.
The controversy began following Rahman’s conversation with BBC Asian Network, where he spoke about receiving fewer Hindi film offers in recent years. During the interview, he reflected on changes within the industry and said that people who are “not creative” now hold decision-making power. He also remarked that it “might be a communal thing”, a statement that drew criticism from sections of social media and the film fraternity.
Addressing the reactions, Rahman said music has always been his way of uniting people and honouring India’s cultural diversity. “Music has been always been my way of connecting, celebrating and honouring our culture. India is my inspiration, my teacher, and my home. I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood, but my purpose has always been to uplift, honour, and serve through music. I have never wished to cause pain, and I hope my sincerity is felt,” he said.

In the same message, the composer listed projects that he said reflect his commitment to meaningful and inclusive work. “From nurturing JHALAA presented at the Wave Summit in front of the Honourable Prime Minister and Rooh-e-Noor, to collaborating with young Naga musicians to create a string orchestra, to mentoring the Sunshine Orchestra, to building Secret Mountain, India’s first multicultural virtual band, and the honour of scoring Ramayana alongside Hans Zimmer, each journey has strengthened my purpose. I remain grateful to this nation and committed to music,” Rahman said.
The video concluded with Rahman saying Jai Hind. It also featured a clip from the 2023 World Cup match at the Narendra Modi Stadium, where India defeated Pakistan and the crowd sang his Vande Mataram.
