I think he wholly believes he loves Poonam but doesn't understand what real love entails. I don't think he respects Poonam as a person. He has an idealized version of her in his mind and if the real Poonam doesn't measure up to those expectations, she gets abused. Laakhan has done the following things to Poonam:
  • Hurt her and threatened to kill her(all the time)
  • Act excessively jealous and possessive ( She was forbidden to utter Priyom's name and he hurt a whole family that was coming for the rishta )
  • Humiliated her and yelled at her (when he made her try those clothes multiple times and made the attention comment)
  • blamed her for his abusive behaviour(all the time, when her dad at pagphera acted rude, he blamed her)
  • Limit access to phone
  • Controls where she goes and what she does(the whole college track where he stalked her and then after marriage broke, he followed her)
The show has depicted all these behaviours from Laakhan toward Poonam. I copied and pasted these bullet points from a domestic violence website whose link I have posted below. So yeah, I politely disagree that he respects Poonam. Even though he is a fictional character, his behaviour mirrors real life abusers.

However, I do want to add that whatever I say shouldn't make you not enjoy the show or Laakhan. Afterall it is a TV show and I just have a very different view of the character you like. I also want to repeat I do like the actor and anything negative about Laakhan has nothing to do with Vishal who is a real nice guy.I only disagree with you regarding the character but keep enjoying the show and supporting the actor you like. 😊

first of all.. welcome to the forum! 😊

nicely summarized Poonam's character! 👍🏼 she has grown up in a patriarchal world and it's been made clear in her intro itself that she had accepted that she belongs to sch society. in Tuesday's epi.. her mental state was well depicted, if not fully, to dome extent for sure.. when she said, my marriage was fixed with u when I didn't even know the meaning of it.. even after that marriage was broken, she wasn't asked for her wish and again same mistake was repeated by PT..

I think here, the (original)writers also considered to highlight the wrath of child-marriage, along with other issues.. the marriages were fixed when the meaning of the word itself is kinda alien for the two..

and here, I guess.. LT has been grown up, thinking that Poonam is a kind of possession to him, something that belonged only to him and smthng that he owns! and for that only he has the r8s to make each and every decision of her life... for this, his own words to be quoted, "tumhe kisi aur se pyaar karne ka haq kisne diya?!"

Redemption... well! if he changes.. for his good only! though CVs can find a way to whitewash him regarding the murder of a family.. he can't be defended for all the torments he has given to the kids who looked up to him almost as their father figure and hoped that till he is there no one can harm them.. he can't be excused for the mental torment that Maya has been through... and others as well in this case..

lastly.. would like to say that again that u hv stated in ur post as well... Vishal is no doubt a tremendous actor and disliking a character, portraying by him on screen, can't be spelled as our hatred towards the actor... if he can successfully make you hate his character, it's his achievement only.. and he z the only person to be credited for this! 😊

Thank you for pointing this out, because I exactly felt this while watching these scenes. I have read discussions about domestic abuse and that is why I was familiar with the behavior of a domestic abuser. Everything Lakhan has been doing is classic example of domestic abuser. These guys claim they love the girl most, but that means she basically has to live according to their whims. One foot out of line and she gets abused. When he threatens her not to speak on phone with anyone, he was basically isolating her. He ordered her to sleep without knowing whether she wants to sleep or not. In the past he made her change dresses so many, she was exhausted. Then he made her stand in cold water.

Pretty sure they will romanticise and normalize this abuse. What do you expect more from Indian tv writers.

I do agree with your point of view. Every time I see Poonam stammering her way through two sentences in front of Laakhan, I'm this close to shattering a glass or two with my high pitched scream. 😆 She conforms. She still thinks that she has to be the perfect wife and hence the reason why she decided to tell everything to Laakhan. His reaction, uhm not so great but it was predictable. Laakhan has always been intimidating, abusive and extremely violent. He punishes anyone and everyone. He had an opportunity to redeem himself about 60 episodes ago but he just went crazier and crazier in attaining what had been taken from him. Poonam. If Poonam was taught, since childhood, that she was to make Laakhan happy as he was her future husband, then Laakhan took it upon himself to treat her like his personal possession. Something he could treat however he wished, or however is mood took him because according to him; she was his future wife and his only.
I mean it's pretty messed up. The relationship the two have shared was always one sided and rather confusing. She doesn't love him, never has loved him. She always feared him and he made sure that she feared him. People have different ways of showing their love, Laakhan chose the dark path that's turned him into a massive antagonist.

The relationship between Priyom and Poonam however, was completely different. So much different. She was always comfortable around him than she ever was around Laakhan. Either it's the contrast in their personality or the fact that he was just her friend than her future husband. But regardless, I don't think she would have feared Priyom as much as she fears Laakhan right now, if Priyom was engaged to her instead of Laakhan.

I do enjoy watching the show and Vishal is bloody amazing as Laakhan but I don't encourage such behaviour. If I was in such a situation I wouldn't tolerate such behaviour from anyone let alone my husband. But I consider myself lucky that I'm not in such a position where my parents chose my groom for me, who constantly intimidated and hurt me, but then ultimately married me and couldn't accept the fact that I didn't love him but rather feared him. I can just watch such stories and yell at my TV screen because I know these stories are pretty accurate for so many girls out there that are getting abused and not given a voice. I just hope Poonam gets a happy ending amidst the bloodshed.

And, welcome to the forum! I'm kind of new around here myself. 😆

Thanks for the welcome 😊. Oh, I totally agree with your points. To be honest I am surprised Mithilesh and Maya didn't put up more fuss regarding Laakhan living with them. Wouldn't his kids have PTSD? If I had kids and I knew their kidnapper was coming to live under one roof, I would move out. I will say this forum is pretty amazing and everyone is very respectful toward varied opinions. In my past experience, critiquing a fictional character was seen as a critique against the actor. The critiques are really toward writers, producers and the production house. They are the only one who can make the show better with character development, coherent plot and interesting storytelling. I demand smart writing, TRPs be damned. I feel more interesting stories are being told with female protagonists in Indian movies. We are seeing movies like Queen, Piku and NH10. I want that sort of revolution happening in Indian television as well. They need to stop underestimating their viewers. I think this show still has a lot of potential in terms of telling an interesting story. It really depends on how they execute it.

That's the thing, I do expect a lot more from Indian Tv writers. According to Ekta Kapoor, TV writers are paid more than movie script writers. Although I blame Ekta for ruining Indian Tv. She doesn't watch the shows she produces and I feel she looks down on people who watch her shows. According to her, people like me wouldn't be interested in watching Indian Tv shows anyway. She is right to an extent, I consume mostly western TV shows along with occasional Korean and Japanese drama. However as a South Asian, I am under represented in Western media. Other than Mindy Project, South Asian women aren't represented as leads or love interest. Which is why I am interested in Indian Tv shows. I want to see people who look like me being represented in mainstream media. Indian TV media needs to step up their game because I feel like they will lose the younger demographic to Western TV shows.

Thanks for the welcome 😊 Oh you are completely justified in being pissed off at what is depicted on show because sadly a lot of women are living Poonam's life as reality. I just hope men don't watch this show and think a girl will find Laakhan type of behaviour romantic in real life. I think we are fairly privileged and in my case I don't live in India so the societal pressures aren't there. Women in India already have to deal with a lot of BS day to day. I've read a really good critique of 90's Indian movies normalizing stalking and harassment. They used Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge as one of the examples. It made me view the movie in a completely different light since I loved it as a kid. LOL, I still like Sharukh though. I just hope people watch this show as a critique of Indian society. What is being depicted is true in real life but shouldn't be accepted by the actual consumers. Maybe it will lead to more awareness.

Well honestly I can't say that this z the best forum I hv cme across in IF, but I really do enjoy having discussions with some of the members here! And I can assure u that u will discover many things abt the forum as the days will pass! 😛

Ok talking abt potential and storyline.. I feel a well-set and strong plotline with well execution r the essential things.. But sadly on Indian TV TRPs are more important than anythng else.. and it kinda draws a boundryline for the creative experiences sch as u hv mentioned.. bt I really can't decide whether they r underestimating the audience or are really able to read them!!

And the thing that disturbs me the most is that they escape by putting a 'disclaimer' that it's just for entertainment purpose, and there z no intention to hurt or portraying anyone in bad light.. Historicals r the first in this queue!.. History will be tempered under sch disclaimers, like they hv got license to show anythng, even creating own versions, by putting that mere thing!
