Chapter 7
The Final Day

Vibha helped Parth get back to his bed and she said she would come back again. Parth simply nodded and let a small smile spread across his face. Vibha took a few steps towards the double doors, but then came back again and held out her hand.

Vibha: Friends?

Parth flinched his eyebrows with a pleasantly surprised look on his face, he certainly hadn't expected this. And he thought to himself that he had always ignored girls' attempts to befriend him in the past. But this time around it felt different. He didn't want his mind to overthink and he simply let out his hand slowly. She grabbed it and shook his hand with a big smile radiating on her face. Parth simply nodded to acknowledge that they were indeed friends now.

Vibha: Good!

Parth was lost in her beaming eyes and she looked at his face, and she realized he was staring at her, and then she looked down at their hands, which were still interlocked. She simply raised her eyebrows and cheekily cleared her throat to tell him to let go of her hand. He realized that he was lost in her thoughts, and he quickly let go, looking visibly fumbled and fuzzled. She smiled and then left. He thought he was going crazy, they'd just become friends, apparently, and he was acting so strange. But what was normal for him? He tried to figure out why what he felt for people was changing slowly? He always only had the feeling of indifference towards others during his previous years as a school student. So what if this was Warrior High? So what if some of the students here had bigger egos? Some were really good-hearted souls with a genuine concern and care for others. And Vibha was one of them. He had started to appreciate Samir's efforts as well. He thought finally there were at least two people who were accepting him for what he was. And just as he felt happy about himself and the nice morning that only kept bringing him wonderful things to feel and see, Vibha walked in with two plates of breakfast. She gave one to Parth and stealthily sat on the chair next to his bed. Parth looked at her as he held the plate that she'd put on his lap. Vibha was just about to eat when she spotted Parth looking at her.

Vibha: Ab kya hua?
Parth: Yeh...
Vibha: Breakfast hi hai, kha lo!
Parth: Lekin...
Vibha: Arey, yeh main layi hu, isme kuch nahi mila hua hai. Kha lo!
Parth: Kya?
Vibha: (realized what she'd just said) Erm... Mera matlab hai... Woh yeh breakfast tumhare liye perfect hai, healthy you know! Kha lo. Ab aur questions mat pucho.
Parth: Okay, thanks.
Vibha: You're welcome! Now eat!

Parth looked at her bossing him around, but it was for his own good. He was feeling weak and he was hungry too.

Vibha: Pata hai mujhe kitni zoro se bhukh lagi thi!
Parth: Hmm (he looked at her gulping down her food and smiled)
Vibha: Achcha hua, mess se breakfast mil gaya.
Parth: Thanks once again.
Vibha: Arey, tum kitni baar thanks bologe, breakfast khao!

She seemed bossy, and it appeared that she was telling him to eat when he tried to say something. But he found this behaviour of hers endearing. Had it been someone else, perhaps he would have felt and reacted differently. But there was something about her that made him like her and what seemed to him - her erratic, bossy ways.

It was the final day of the events leading up to the decision of the Junior HeadBoy and HeadGirl. The four students were going to be short-listed today, based on their tests, performances, and general behaviour that the teachers had been observing. Around mid-day, the students were gathered in a classroom to announce the results of the tests, performances, and vote for the most popular choice. The first announcement came for the aptitude test performance. There was no surprise there for the teachers, Parth had done exceptionally well, leaving all other boys far behind. But as his name was called out, a lot of boys turned green with envy as they hadn't expected Parth to be academically brilliant! His temper and aloofness along with his built physique had definitely earned him the 'Weird' tag, and 'Mr. Muscle Power', but now it seemed like the 'Bookworm' was going to be added on to his name. A few students joined Samir and Vihba in applauding his intelligence, while Rahul looked on. The girls results saw a tie between Vibha and another geeky girl and Parth had a faint smile as he realized that Vibha wasn't just beautiful on the outside, but also a nice person, and a smart girl. Vibha smiled and looked at everyone as she beamed with confidence. The next results up were for the talent round, and the crowd already knew which girl had won this. Vibha's dance skills easily beat everyone's talents, and as her name was called out yet again, Parth couldn't help himself but clap for her. She noticed Parth clapping and smiled back at him. The boys round was finalized as a tie between Rahul and another student who acted out a part from Shakespeare's play brilliantly. Vibha felt sad as she clapped along, not for Rahul, but for the other student. She looked across at Parth who looked serious all of a sudden. She wished there was something she could do, without landing Rahul in trouble. But so far she had come up with nothing in her mind.

The teachers gave a brief summary on their observation of students, and finally concluded with their choice - they had unanimously voted for Vibha as the Junior HeadGirl and they said it was a close decision between Rahul and Parth, but that they chose Parth for his overall performance. The students however were in complete disagreement when it was the question of the boys group. The girls group was in a somewhat unison about their choice. The voting began for the respective groups and soon finished as everyone put a tick mark next to the name they chose.

Classes resumed after voting and it was soon time for dinner. The chatter was all about the for candidates to be chosen. Two had already been selected by the teachers, Parth and Vibha. Parth was surprised that he had been chosen, while Vibha was glad that she had been the chosen choice for the teachers. After dinner, the students gathered in a classroom once again to find out the results of the student votes. 'And the winner for the boys group is...' there was silence in the classroom, most students were already starting to look at Rahul... 'Rahul', and the boys started clapping, while Parth looked on, with an expressionless face. 'And the winner for the girls group is... Oh, Vibha, we have Vibha, again!'. Vibha and Rahul walked up to the front of the classroom and thanked their friends for voting for them. Parth was not affected by any of this, but deep down he was happy to see Vibha smile. It is what she wanted after all, and why not! She deserved every bit of appreciation and fame!

Announcement was then made that the three students would be interviewed by the headmistress the next day and then the final decision would be hers. And as everyone started to go back to the dorms, Parth walked up to Vibha, who was standing next to Rahul, and hesitantly held out his hand.

Parth: Congratulations!

Vibha enthusiastically grabbed his hand and gave him a handshake with a smile on her face. She looked into his eyes and smiled again.

Vibha: Thank you! Aur tumhe bhi!
Parth: Mujhe... mujhe in sab cheezo main interest nahi hai!
Vibha: Arey, teachers ne kuch soch samajh kar hi tumhe select kiya hai na?
Parth: Ha, lekin...
Vibha: Lekin vekin kuch nahi!
Rahul: Vibha, let's go...
Vibha: Rahul, tum jao, I'll catch up with you later.
Rahul: Fine, as you wish! Bye!

Rahul left casually, while Vibha turned to Parth and started talking to him again.

Vibha: Ha toh main kya keh rahi thi?

Parth nodded as he didn't know what to say. But he didn't want to leave. He just felt like listening to her, even though he wouldn't be interested in any of it.

Vibha: Waise tum itne bhi bure nahi ho, jitne bante ho!
Parth: Kya?
Vibha: Arey kuch nahi, pata chala phir gussa ho gaye... rehne do...
Parth: Waise, how is your hand?
Vibha: Mere haath ko kya hua?
Parth: Woh, glass...
Vibha: Oh, ha, ab theek hai, Don't worry, it was just a small cut.
Parth: I'm sorry for that!
Vibha: Tum sorry bol chuke ho, lekin phir bhi, its okay, you're forgiven!

Vibha smiled as she told him that she had forgiven him. He smiled back at her. Parth noticed that everyone had left the classroom and they were both still standing there.

Parth: I think we should go...
Vibha: Ha, chalo, tum kitni baatein karte ho...

She looked at him cheekily, they both knew that she was the one doing all the talking, but she liked seeing him smile, so she kept attempting to make his lips curve with happiness, even if the reason had to be her being silly or stupid!

The next morning was anxiously awaited by Rahul. For Vibha, the decision had already been made, even though a second choice had been picked up from the votes, she knew deep down that she was way more capable and worth of becoming the Junior HeadGirl. For Rahul, it was testing time indeed as he believed that Parth could topple him in the interview, especially since he was teacher's choice. He tried to be cool and confident, but deep down he was unsure of what was going to happen. Parth was not too bothered, but seeing Rahul standing up against him, he didn't feel like giving up. He thought he would give it a shot, he would try his best to convince the headmistress to choose anyone else but Rahul. He really did not like him, the reasons in his logical mind were many, he was the spoilt rich kid, he had no regard for other's sentiments, he didn't not think twice before playing his pranks... and the one that subconsciously pinched him the most, he was close to Vibha!

The headmistress called the four candidates one by one into her office, to ask them what they felt they needed to do as a dutiful HeadBoy and HeadGirl of the school. Their answers and further questions she prodded them with made her decision quite clear. The students were gathered in the assembly room for the final results. The headmistress started out with a big speech on the reputation of the school and the responsibility of the students to maintain it. And the role of the Junior HeadBoy and HeadGirl would be to keep the student's discipline in check and also act as their representative, to solve any issues, or matters that need special attention. With this, she said she'd weighed in the strengths and weaknesses of all four candidates and had come to her final decision. The obvious choice for the HeadGirl was Vibha, and as everyone started clapping for her and her name was called out, Parth looked at her and smiled. He was genuinely happy for her. Samir noticed this and smiled. 'And for the boys... the HeadBoy is...' the headmistress paused for a bit and said 'Rahul!'. Parth wasn't in a state of shock or anything per say, he was just not too pleased with the idea. Perhaps if he had tried to sell himself instead of highlight Rahul's weaknesses, then the results would have been different. But he didn't want to become the HeadBoy anyway, so he stood there, and thought not to let this affect him too much. Vibha looked sad as she remembered how Rahul had cheated to win the boxing match and she thought in her head that if anyone deserved to win this badge, it was only Parth, and most definitely not Rahul!

She at once decided to talk to the headmistress in confidence. She could not let Parth suffer for something that he had no control over. She knew that he didn't want to become the HeadBoy, but she thought they could work together and take the reputation of the school to new heights. The idea of her working with him in school activities excited her. It also partly reeled from the fact that she'd known Rahul for so long, that she knew he would do absolutely nothing as a HeadBoy of the school, and leave all the work to her. She went up to the headmistress and cleared her throat to talk.

Vibha: Maam, mujhe aapse kuch baat karni thi...
Headmistress: Yes Vibha, what do you want to say?
Vibha: Maam, yaha nahi, can we please go to your office?
Headmistress: That's an odd request!
Vibha: Please Maam, I would like to tell you something in confidence.
Headmistress: Okay. But I hope it doesn't take too long.
Vibha: No Maam, it won't.

Vibha went along with the headmistress to her office and told her how Rahul had cheated to win the boxing match. And that if anyone deserved to win the badge of HeadBoy, it was Parth. And only him! The headmistress asked her why she didn't come forward earlier and she explained to her that Rahul was a very dear friend and didn't want to get him in trouble. But she decided to speak up now as she could not let Parth suffer for Rahul's misdeeds. The headmistress tried to make her understand that it was unethical of Rahul to win by false means, but Parth didn't seem like he wanted to take on the responsibility anyway. Vibha reasoned with her, that he was a tough guy, but if he was persuaded to do the right thing, to do anything at all, he would give it his all, and excel! And that's what the school needed in a HeadBoy. The headmistress agreed and thanked Vibha, but Vibha wanted something in return. She wanted Rahul to be immune from serious punishment and also to not let anyone know that Rahul had cheated. The headmistress said she could make no promises, but that she would think of something to change the results. The headmistress then asked Vibha to leave as she thought of changing the results, but how? What would the reason be?

Soon enough, as the chatter began to intensify in the assembly room, Vibha walked in and joined Rahul in the front and waited anxiously for the headmistress to come back. She looked at Parth, who had a confused look on his face. She looked at him and smiled. He really had no idea what she was upto. He did think she was weird, just as she thought he was weird. The headmistress soon entered the room and everyone was silent. She grabbed the mike and said that she had an announcement to make. She said that the results needed to be changed! 'Changed?' everyone looked at one another with puzzling looks, they had no idea what the headmistress was talking about. Why did the results need to be changed? And what exactly, rather who exactly was being changed?

So Vibharth are finally friends and they have breakfast together . I like how Vibha says 'Arey, yeh main layi hu, isme kuch nahi mila hua hai. Kha lo! 😉' Love how you kept the suspense going of the head boy selection. Wonder how the headmistress is going to give reasoning to the change being made to the results. Once again nice update, waiting for next part .
