The first time I saw Anil Kapoor's daughter she was a tall, lanky, bustling bundle of energy on the sets of Sanjay Bhansali's Black trying to please her boss by making her presence felt. Sonam's bonding with the film's leading lady Rani Mukherjee was so genuine, I immediately did away with the rumour of an affair between Sonam's dad and Rani that had done the rounds earlier.
Often talk of romantic liaisons between two people from the same profession is based entirely on seeing them together. And debut-making pairs are sitting ducks for link-up stories. But some of these pairs don't even like each other, let alone fall in love with one another.
Recently when the son of a ubiquitous screen-mother made his debut with a model, the girl threw so many tantrums on the sets, that the guy was reduced to a nervous wreck. I was quaking when I had to kiss her. What if, she accused me of bad breath? the star-kid said.
This must be the only case of a male debutant being intimidated by his female counterpart. The reverse is often true. While an out-of-town debutante was shooting for her first film, she had her hero hitting on her so hard. I'd have liked to hit him hard, she said.
My first hero liked to sleep with anything that walked. Every night I used to go back to my apartment and cry. I felt like I was being ragged in boarding school.
There was a lot of goodnatured ragging on the sets of Sonam and Ranbir Kapoor's first film. The first time I met Sonam, I'd asked her if she wanted to be a star Noooo, she had lied to herself. Just learning cinema, watching Rani and Mr Bachchan emote makes me want to stay behind the camera.
A few months later, she was on. And so was Ranbir. He was definitely more confident than she to begin with. The kids were quite contrast. Ranbir was quiet, keenly observant attentive, polite, correct and warm. Sonam was more spontaneous, childlike, eager, exuberant and unstudied. In some strange way Sonam was more like Ranbir's dad Rishi, whereas Ranbir was more cautious and reined-in like Sonam's dad Anil.
Recently, I watched the rushes of their debut film with Ranbir's mom Neetu Singh. At that moment when Neetu and Bhansali stood watching Ranbir waltzing with Sonam, a glimmering hope was born.
