Disney goes Desi

The world of Disney's animated films has enthralled us for years. And what's more, their stories bear great resemblance to those in our Hindi films - a loveable protagonist, a series of magical events, an unfortunate twist and ultimately, a happy ending. And just as Beauty and The Beast is being made in a live action format, we wonder which stars would fit the bill if Indian versions were to be made of these iconic Disney films. Take a look...

aladdin

Aladdin

In this exotic tale set in the fantastical land of Agrabah, Aladdin goes from rags to riches thanks to his intelligence, determination and a little bit of magic. And who better to play this charming young prince than Ranveer Singh? We've seen him not only play a street smart Bittoo in Band Baaja Baaraat but also seen him be polished and prince-like in films like Ladies vs Ricky Bahl and the more recent Dil Dhadakne Do. And as far as the his princess Jasmine is concerned, Deepika Padukone is our best bet. Her beauty coupled with her independent mind make her the ideal choice for a princess who wishes to see a whole new world outside of the palace. And as the comedic and kind hearted Genie, we'd love to see Boman Irani essay the part. Armed with ready wit, it would be great to see the camaraderie between him and Ranveer Singh. And while a version of Aladdin has been made before with Riteish Deshmukh and Jacqueline Fernandez in the lead pair with Amitabh Bachchan as the Genie, it would be interesting to watch the film with a fresh cast and perspective.

Cinderella

Cinderella

One of the most loved tales of a young girl who goes from being a mistreated orphan to being the beautiful maiden who wins the Prince's heart, Cinderella has one of the largest number of live action Hollywood remakes. But if a Bollywood remake were to be made, we'd love to see the dreamy Shraddha Kapoor play the part of Cinderella. Not only can she pull off emotional scenes with ease, she can bring the innocence and hopefulness to the screen in a silent yet strong way. And Madhuri Dixit makes for the perfect Fairy Godmother to this Cinderella. Not only is Shraddha a self-confessed Madhuri fan, Madhuri herself is an awe-striking figure who can weave her magic.

Snow White

Snow White

The legendary story is of the young girl with skin white as snow, lips as red as blood and hair as black as ebony. And the beautiful Anushka Sharma, who is just as cherry as Snow White, would easily fit the bill. We've seen her play headstrong and independent characters and it would be interesting to see a completely different side of her as a naive do-gooder. As the antagonist, the Stepmother, we'd love to see Shabana Azmi bring back her witchy element from Vishal Bhardwaj's Makdee and take on the mantle of the jealous woman.

Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty

A tale of true love, Sleeping Beauty is a about a cursed princess who can only be rescued from a deathlike sleep by her true love's kiss. As the beautiful Aurora, Katrina Kaif would suit perfectly as she looks every bit a royal and truly blessed with beauty and grace. And as the gallant Prince Phillip, who better than Ranbir Kapoor to play the part? Having shown immense range thus far, playing the young prince who goes against all odds to save his lady love would seem like an easy feat for the young heartthrob. What's more, it would be great to see a magical and fairytale ending for the it-couple, wouldn't it?

Beauty and the beast

Beauty and The Beast

As the young, dutiful and precocious Belle, Sonam Kapoor would be an ideal choice. Right from immersing herself in books to elegantly gliding across the Beast's mansion in beautiful clothing, Sonam could pull of the character with ease. And we find her perfect counterpart in Salman Khan, whose daunting and muscular body and kind-heartedness make him the perfect candidate for an accursed and misunderstood Prince in the guise of a Beast. Already set to romance each other in Sooraj Barjatya's Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, we're sure this would be quite a star pairing.

tangled

Tangled

In a loose adaptation of the original tale, Disney's Tangled introduced us to a young and energetic Rapunzel, whose one wish is to see the floating lights on her birthday. As the impressionable and adorable Rapunzel, Alia Bhatt would do full justice to the character, combining the innocence of Shanaya from Student of the Year, as well as the free spiritedness of Veera from Highway. And we'd love to see Shahid Kapoor play the petty thief Flynn Rider, who's charm and goofiness make him endearing. Already enthused by their pairing in Vikas Bahl's Shandaar, it would be great to see them pair up for this fairytale too!

Little mermaid

Little Mermaid

Set in an underwater kingdom, The Little Mermaid is about the young princess Ariel who dreams of being human. Just as Ariel is curious to understand the world beyond the ocean, Kriti Sanon can bring the same level of exploratory zeal and inquisitiveness, just like she did in her debut film, Heropanti. A young newcomer with a whole world of opportunities before her, Kriti would slip right into Ariel's shoes (or fins, in this case).

Frozen

Frozen

A loveable film about two sisters who are orphaned and left to rule Arondale, Frozen looks at the strained relationship of Elsa and Anna and how it is healed by time and true, selfless love. And Bollywood's most glamourous sisters, Karisma and Kareena Kapoor would be just perfect to play Elsa and Anna respectively. While Karisma has the acting chops to play the young and independent Elsa, who finally breaks through her inhibitions, Kareena has the vivacity to play Anna, who wants to break out of her confines without losing touch of her sister. Add Saif Ali Khan as the kindhearted fixer-upper Kristoff and we have ourselves a royal cast to perfectly recreate the grand scale Disney tale.

Pocahontas

Pocahontas

Iron-willed and rooted, Pocahontas is regarded as one of the strongest female figures from the Disney universe. And as one of the strongest actresses the film industry has to offer, Tabu would rightly fit the part. Whether it is her unchained spirit or her courage to stand up to the odds and protect the man she loves from her own family, Tabu's dynamic personality would be able to embrace Pocahontas' vibrant nature easily.
