Interview : Making Fun Of My 75-year-old Mother Is Not Done: Bhansali

Tension is brewing between Sanjay Leela Bhasali and Farah Khan over the release date of their films 'Saawariya' and 'Om Shanti Om' respectively. The former is upset with his colleague for ridiculing him and his mother on chat shows and interviews.

'Making fun of my 75-year-old mother is really not done. I'm proud to have my mother's name as part of my name. No civilised human would want his or her parent ridiculed. Even if 'reliable sources' decide to make fun of my mother to make mileage they'd still have my mother's blessings,' Bhansali told us.

'Saawariya', which is launching two star kids - Neetu and Rishi Kapoor's son Ranbeer and Anil Kapoor's daughter Sonam - is coming to the theatres Nov 9. On the same day releases Farah Khan's second directorial venture 'Om Shanti Om' with Shah Rukh Khan in the main lead.

'My mom has shown immense love for Farah and her family although over the years they've repeatedly made barbed comments about her in public. On 'Koffee With Karan', Farah was heard saying that if I made 'Om Shanti Om' it would be called 'Ma Shanti Ma'.

'Why bring my mother into this unnecessarily, specially since my mother has always shown so much love and affection for Farah? No matter how much the provocation, I'd never speak like this about anyone's parents.'

The same day release may cause what many distributors see as a bottleneck at the box office.

When asked about the supposed competition Sanjay said: 'I'm here to make a film and believe filmmaking to be an art form. Cinema is not a battlefield. We all work very hard on our films. And I'm sure my film is as dear to me as other people's films are to them.

'Let me say at the outset that we had announced our decision to release 'Saawariya' on Nov 9 a year ago at a press conference held by Sony Pictures. So we aren't coming on anyone else's release date. I'm sure 'Om Shanti Om' is a terrific film. And Shah Rukh Khan has a huge draw. In fact, he's the biggest star of the country. We are very small compared with him. I wish his film all the best.'

Bhansali, whose last film 'Black' received critical acclaim and is being honoured with the National Award, says Farah should restrict her comment to work.

'If Farah is feeling competitive towards my film she should restrict her comments to my work and not get personal. Farah and I go back a long way. We can't allow one film to sour our relations.'

'Shah Rukh and I had come to a moral decision to keep this dignified and not to speak about each other's film in print. I intend to stick to that decision even if other people on his behalf are eagerly breaking that moral code. There are 'sources' close to the film making catty comments about me, making fun of me and even my mother to get attention.'

Such provocations won't affect him and he is not going to retaliate, said Bhansali.

'I'm not going to be provoked into talking about another person's film or its cast. Me and my mother wish Shah Rukh and his film all the best from the bottom of our hearts.'

it could be all media generated.. both movies are equally big and media needs new masala all the time.. if farah did say it to hurt sanjay's mom.. .. then it's wrong.. but who knows the truth.. definatly not us 😊

I want to see both of them equally as much. I think that they both should be good, but in different ways. I mean, just like you can't compare films like Black and Kal Ho Na Ho becuase both are wonderful in their own right, like that I don't think you can compare Saawariya and OSO. I'll have to wait and watch to see which one turns out better...

Both Sanjay Leela Bansali and Farah Khan were struggling choreographers in early 90s and when they were working together on Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 1942- Love story, had huge arguments and fights. Since then there is resentment between them and when they became judges on Jhalak dikhla ja on Sony, people expected heated arguments but they sort of patched up. Now again with two films, the enmity and digs are back. 🤢

Farah Khan is everything today because of SRK. He recommended her as choreographer in all his films and also acted and produced her first film. Which first time director and that too a woman director can dream of such a huge star cast in her first film, in India?

Whether it is Farah or Bansali, they should let their work speak instead of taking barbs at family.

On personal front I don't think Farah intentionally demeaned Bhansali's mother, but on professional front she does seem to be showing some insecurity and immaturity. Which I don't blame her for, after all she's competing with one of the best craftsmen and a passionate filmmaker.

No offense intended, but I get the feeling that OSO is just all glamour and glitz with the ususal masala quotient and will be a time pass movie that one would not want to see more than once. Just like "Main hoo naa".
The promos also look a bit tacky and over the top. I would not have even thought of giving the promos a second look if it had starred someone other than Shahrukh. I love SRK, but he's got to stop acting in such glitzy movies with nothing new for a story, for the sake of friendship and explore his potential by doing movies like Chak de India.

On the other hand, Saawariya seems to be a refreshing and immensely romantic movie. I have heard of the Russian play this movie is based on, and it seems that it is a heartrending story. And Salman's character will be really to look out for. One can just hope that newcomers do a decent job. The verdict depends on them.

It is obvious which one of these would be a better movie in terms of crafting, story and on the whole. But the question is which one will be a better commercial success? Because many great films never become commercial success.
