The ABCD2 actor talks about surviving in Bollywood
He dances like a dream. So Varun Dhawan is probably the perfect choice for a dance film like ABCD2. As the film nears its release date, 9xe.com caught up with the actor. Excerpts:
ABCD2 is round the corner. Did you see the first part before signing the film?
I was a big fan of ABCD. I remember watching it in theatre in 3D. I was so blown away by the dance sequences that I wished I was a part of it. And now... (smiles)
The first part didn't have any stars...
I hope Shraddha (Kapoor) and I will bring something to the table. But I would still say that if you are making a dance film, there is no one bigger than Prabhu Deva. Anybody can dance but you need to have a passion for it. Remo brings that passion into the film. I underwent workshops with him. He told me: "You first need to respect dancing and you need to understand it."
What were the workshops all about?
I underwent training for six months. I learnt basics of house, crumping, turfing and tutting. Everybody thought that I'll easily get it, but it took me two full months to get it right.
Do you have an idol in terms of dancing?
Prabhu Dheva. My dancing may remind you of many yesteryear actors. But no one can dance like Prabhu Dheva. It's physically impossible to dance like him, to catch the beats. I've danced in the background with him.
You've known Shraddha since your childhood. How was it working with her?
She always wants to get it right, always wants to be the best. This film will be a defining one in her career. She is one of the best female dancers in our country. People have a notion that she is frail. But I know a wild and crazy Shraddha since childhood. You will get to see that Shraddha in the film. She is strikingly different in ABCD 2 than what she was in Aashiqui 2 and Haider. You will see the youngest and sexiest side of her in ABCD 2.
You all faced quite a few setbacks in terms of injuries and fire breaking out on the sets.
During Bezubaan, I had back injury. Even Shradhha was injured. When you see that happening with people around you and then they bounce back, it's very motivating. It's all worth it. I remember one day I delayed the shoot by 3- 3.5 hrs because I had to go to the doctor but we never cancelled the shoot. Even after the fire, we got back in two days in high spirits.
With Badlapur, you proved your acting chops and now you're one of the bankable stars in Bollywood. Does the responsibility overwhelm you?
Honestly, I'm just working everyday. Obviously, I do think of it. I come from a film family so all this is discussed in my house. But I just think of how I can better myself. It's all in my hands. I have to try not to bore the audience.
How much has your life changed after joining films?
I still don't filter. I still make stupid remarks. What's changed is that there's no privacy. The number of cameras for interviews, number of fans, everything has increased. People click pictures by phones. Sometimes, I lose my cool. But at the end of the day, I know I'm blessed.
How do you react to link-ups and false stories?
With smartphones and Twitter, everybody has become part of the media today. I have seen myself being clicked with so many girls, sometimes by those who are just walking next to me and I don't even know them. Any article can be made up. One good thing is that you can always tell the truth to your fans on social media. And finally, what matters the most is your films. If you make a bad film, toh flop hogi. If it's a good film, toh hit hogi. People don't care about your personal life as long as you give a hit.
