Fifty Three

Randhir felt his heart beat quickly as he heard footsteps approach. He breathed a sigh of relief when he saw that it was Rehaan.

"Sanyukta's in danger in there," Randhir said urgently. "Do something."

"What?" Rehaan asked, sounding shocked. "Are you sure?"

"Yes, please Rehaan... help her!" Randhir said urgently. "I would if I could... but I can't!"

Rehaan nodded, and without asking further questions, he banged on the door hard. Randhir hid behind a pillar as the same man opened the door.

"Who are you and what do you want?" he asked Rehaan.

Rehaan looked over his shoulder and saw Sanyukta, who was shivering.

"Get out of here," he told the man.

"You told someone?" the man asked Sanyukta, and she shook her head, still shivering.

"Rehaan... please," Sanyukta said, her eyes filled with tears.

What Randhir wouldn't give to run inside the room and hug her tightly right now, to tell her that he was there for her, and together they would be able to solve anything. But he couldn't.

The man picked up his wallet and glared at the duo.

"You're going to pay for this," the man told Sanyukta. "You aren't getting him now."

Then he walked out of the room, looking pissed off. Sanyukta was shaking as Rehaan ran up to her and hugged her tightly. Randhir watched Rehaan hug Sanyukta as she cried onto his shoulder.

"You shouldn't have come Rehaan," she said to him.

"Why Sanyukta? What did this man want?" he asked her.

"I can't say... I won't say... I just need to give him myself," she whispered in response. "I can't do anything."

Then she leaned into Rehaan's embrace and hugged him back.

"I should say thank you," she murmured. "So thanks... but please don't interfere again."

Randhir smiled to himself, glad that Sanyukta was out of that man's hands. But Randhir was not going to leave that man alone, once he found out more about the man, he would find out what exactly he was keeping from Sanyukta.

As soon as Randhir left the motel, he noticed that the group of little boy's weren't there anymore. He was glad. They should steer clear of this place. What kind of parent's did they have anyways, to bring them here?

Randhir went home and allowed another few weeks to pass, as he watched Sanyukta from afar, making sure she wasn't up to anything else.

She seemed to behave normally for the next few weeks, and time flew by as it always did.

One night, as Randhir was sleeping, he heard screams from his open window. Randhir went to the window and gasped as he saw the houses across the street on fire. That included Sanyukta's house. Randhir ran outside of his apartment building quickly, his heard pounding.

The police were there, trying to block entry, and Rehaan was standing outside.

"Where's Sanyukta?" Randhir asked urgently.

"I don't know if she's still inside or if she made it out safely," Rehaan told him, sounding scared.

"Damn it," Randhir said angrily, and ran towards Sanyukta's house, ignoring the police officers who tried to restrain him, taking no chances.

He couldn't take a chance. How could he, when he loved her so deeply?

Fifty Four

Randhir could feel heat taking over his senses. He couldn't see due to the smoke. He was breathing in carbon monoxide and he was coughing maniacally.

"Sanyukta?" Randhir called out, and he thought he heard a faint voice say his name.

He jumped over pieces of lit wood and removed his hoodie as soon as he saw her. She was trapped in a ring of fire.

She looked like she was about to faint at any possible moment.

Randhir jumped over the fire and grabbed her. She hugged him tightly and buried her face in his neck.

"Randhir," she said weakly. "I knew you'd come."

He kissed her ear and she gripped his t-shirt tightly. Randhir pulled her back and wrapped his hoodie around her before picking her up in his arms and she looked up into his eyes with a smile. Randhir couldn't help but smile back at her, seeing her smile, but he knew that they had to get out of here, so he jumped out of the ring of fire and carried her to the entrance.

By the time he stepped outside into the cool air, she had already passed out in his arms and Randhir had ran to an ambulance. Rehaan, upon seeing Randhir, ran upto him with a water bottle.

Rehaan started to sprinkle water on Sanyukta's face as Randhir wiped the ash off her face. He stroked her hair softly and kissed her forehead.

"You love her don't you?" Rehaan said, sprinkling water over her eyes.

She still flinch.

"Perhaps more than I love myself," Randhir told Rehaan. "But that doesn't matter."

Two paramedics then came and the vehicle started to move towards the hospital.

She picked up Sanyukta's wrist, searching for a pulse.

"I can't feel a pulse," the paramedic said to the other one.

Randhir felt his heart start to beat erratically.

"What do you mean you can't feel her pulse? She has a pulse... her heart's beating," Randhir said quickly.

"Please calm down," one of the paramedics said to him and Rehaan placed a hand on his shoulder.

"No... there's no pulse," the paramedic said again. "I think she inhaled too much carbon monoxide."

Fifty Five

Once they reached the hospital, Sanyukta was taken into the emergency room.

Randhir paced back and forth outside the room and waited for the doctor to come out.

"Don't worry," Rehaan said to Randhir. "She'll be fine."

"I know," Randhir said. "She has to be fine. If something had happened to her, there's no way I wouldn't be dying too."

Rehaan nodded and looked up at Randhir.

"Why don't you be with her?" Rehaan asked Randhir.

"How?" Randhir asked. "How am I supposed to be with her, knowing that I'm not good enough for her... knowing that I'd only hurt her?"

"How do you know that?" Rehaan asked him.

"I just know," Randhir said. "I love her, yes, but I'm not meant to be with her."

"You're crazy," Rehaan said, shaking his head. "It's so simple... she loves you, you love her, there's no reason to complicate things and be apart."

"Rehaan, I think you like her," Randhir said out loud.

"I do like her, but not in the way you love her," Rehaan responded.

"If you like her, then you'll want the best for her... what's best for her is me staying away from her," Randhir told Rehaan. "So do me a favour and don't push me to be with her."

The doctor then came out and said with a smile, "She's alright, but still unconscious. One of you may go and see her."

"Go," Rehaan told Randhir, but he hesitated. "Randhir don't overthink this too... just go."

Randhir nodded and went inside the emergency room, before picking up her hand. She was lying down peacefully, a smile on her face. He brought her hand to his lips and kissed it.

"I love you," he told her sincerely.

He kissed her forehead and stroked her hair as she stirred in her sleep, regaining consciousness.

Randhir stood up and went outside the room, before glancing at Rehaan.

"She's conscious... you can see her," he told him.

Rehaan nodded and was about to enter the emergency room when Randhir held his shoulder to stop him.

"Rehaan," Randhir said, "I wasn't here... I wasn't there to save her... you saved her from the fire, not me."

"What?" Rehaan asked, sounding outraged. "No way! I'm telling her the truth!"

"If you care about her like you say you do, then you'll do that much for her. It isn't for me, I'm asking you for her sake," Randhir told Rehaan. "Tell her that you saved her, and if she asks for me, tell her I wasn't there... and I wasn't here either."

"You're the craziest fool I've ever seen Randhir," Rehaan said to him, shaking his head, then he threw Randhir's hand off his shoulder and walked into Sanyukta's room.

Fifty Six

Randhir went by the door and watched as Rehaan sat beside Sanyukta. She tried to sit up, but Rehaan placed a hand on her shoulder, indicating for her to sit down.

"Where's Randhir?" Sanyukta asked.

"Randhir?" Rehaan replied, sounding casual. "I don't know... he's probably at home. Why?"

"Rehaan, Randhir saved me," Sanyukta told him with such certainty.

Rehaan frowned.

"Randhir saved you?" he asked her. "Sanyukta, how could you mistake me for Randhir?"

"Wait... you saved me?" Sanyukta asked Rehaan, sounding like she didn't believe him.

"Yes," Rehaan told her. "I did. You were already about to faint, so you could have been dreaming."

"Maybe," Sanyukta murmured, and Randhir knew that she wasn't entirely convinced. "Are you sure Randhir wasn't around?"

"Yes Sanyukta," Rehaan told her. "He wasn't."

Sanyukta nodded and sighed.

"Okay," she replied. "Thanks for saving me Rehaan."

Randhir then turned around and went home, glad that Rehaan listened to him. He didn't want to get Sanyukta's hopes up, when there was nothing to be hopeful about.

He was fighting with destiny, yes, and he was fighting and fighting, until destiny proved to be more powerful than him. If destiny really wanted Sanyukta and Randhir to be together, his plans to stay away would all fail.
