Chapter 40
Slumbering silence
"Then all is still. The stones are
crooned to sleep
By the soft sound of rain that
slowly dies;
And cradled in the branches,
hidden deep
In each bright bud, a slumbering
silence lies."
- Rainer Maria Rilke
But why did you not tell us anything for so many years, Amma?! Why did you let us believe that she had committed suicide?"
A shattering earth shaking clap of thunder sounded right above the house!
"Hello hi bye bye!" Manorama mami cried out as there was a power cut and darkness engulfed them.
Even the external forces seemed to be shaken by the secret Devyani Raizada had just disclosed!
"I will get the candles!" Aakash called out in the dark. "Don't move anyone!"
As Aakash brushed past Payal, she caught hold of his sleeve and whispered, "Can I help you Aakashji?"
"Yes Payal, come with me,"Aakash smiled in the dark and grasped her fingers lightly. Payal hesitated for a second before taking his hand and following him into the other room.
"Even the gods are blaming you, sasuma! Hello hi bye bye! You are a big liar, sasuma!" Manorama's high pitched voice filled the dark room.
Rain wailed the roof and the room filled with Devyani Raizada's sobs.
"Shut up Manorama!" Manohar was enraged.
At that moment Aakash and Payal entered the room carrying the candles. It relieved the darkness of the room but barely so...casting dark shadows on the walls around them. The rain continued its hammering...
Devyani Raizada bent her head as if in penance, "I did lie to all of you all these years...its true..."
"But believe me my son," she said raising her head and looking into Manohar Raizada's eyes beseechingly, " I was scared, very very scared..."
The candles flickered in her plight...
Manohar hugged his mother in a tight embrace and said in a comoting voice,"Amma I know, if you thought it best not to tell us about the murder, then there must be a reason...".
"Yes Nani, it must have been difficult for you to remain tight lipped about your own daughter's murder but you can tell us now can't you..." Anjali pleaded...the tears blurred her eyes...as the rain drummed relentlessly...
Akash moved forward and placed a candle on the table besides Nani and said thoughtfully, "I think it is something to do with the Malliks, isn't it Nani? That is why you insisted that I keep my meeting with Anjalidi, in Delhi a secret, didn't you? And you warned me against the Mallik in particular!"
Nani nodded her head slowly. "Yes bitwa, when I read in the newspapers that in the presence of Subhadra Ajit had shot at Chhotey, my world came crashing down! I couldn't believe that she had broken her vow to me... that she had gone against her word of honour... ! All he sacrifices I had made turned into a cypher in a livid second and remorse made me sick..."
Nani's face flushed with anger, "And so I decided I was no longer bound by my promise to her! The deal was over! That is why I sent you Akash, to fetch Arnav and Anjali...so that I could tell them the truth of their mother's death and why I was forced to leave them..." Nani choked up.
"I can't understand what you are saying Nani..." Anjali cried devastated. "What are you talking about? What was the deal between you and Dadi?"
Devyani's lips trembled.
"Say Nani, please say! Don't keep quiet!? Why did you go away from us?"
Anjali dissolved in tears, "You know Chhotey has never forgiven you for going away quietly...as if you didn't care?"
A sob escaped Nani's lips. "Yes I know, and I deserve all the bitterness he feels towards me," she lamented, "but I did it because I care..."
The pain in her heart erupted releasing the sadness and sorrow that had been held inside her all this time. The world around her became a grey blur and she sought her light of salvation, her arms outstretched...
"Chhotey! Where are you, my son...?" she weeped in grief, her eyes red and fluffy.
But Arnav did not respond. Everyone looked around and realized that Arnav was not among them.
"Where is bhai?" Akash asked concerned.
"Khushi is also missing!" Payal cried.
"Its alright," Anjali said in a thoughtful smiling voice. "They must be with each other..."

"Khushi...," Arnav 's mumbled in a broken voice as his hands moved restlessly from her waist to shoulders and back. He gripped her waist and brought her flush against him and crashed his lips on her, plunging into her sweetness.
Rain beat down on the rickety door of the garden shed threatening to break it down...
But there were no barriers in her heart...she opened up to him letting him explore every crevice of her mouth, giving before he demanded, shuddering against him in the pleasure of giving, filling him till he could beg no more...
Yet he drew away from her lips, panting, hovering over them, but not touching them, his eyes red and restless, as if searching for something but failing to find it...
Khushi closed the gap between them, stroking his cheek lovingly, worried to see him so unlike his usual composed self. "What do you want Arnav? "
"You, all of you...every inch...,"he muttered in a strangled voice.
There was something in the way he said it that suffused Khushi instantaneously.
She joined her lips to his and kissed him passionately.
Arnav's body shuddered in response making her feel all feminine and powerful...
Arnav groaned in pleasure against her lips and let her do as she willed with her tongue and lips and hands that ran up and down his broad back in a motion that drove him mad...
There was something tantalizingly sensuous in her nave, innocent erotic touches...Arnav felt himself drowning deeper and deeper as her caresses grew sweeter and wilder...
"Arnav.." she moaned in a red blur of passion, welcoming him to take over as he pinned her to the wall, raising her hands over her head, holding her there with one hand while he claimed possession over her right breast, kneading the heavy swollen mound... flicking over the taut inviting bud...kissing her all the time...
His rough fingers blazed a fiery path from her bud to her navel. Her heart stopped and then blood pounded in her ears as his fingers touched the tender flesh of her inner thigh...and halted their journey of exploration for a few tantalizing seconds...
But it took only those seconds for her to realize she was ready for his fulfilment that came naturally to her for she was in love, yes so much in love with her man...
She was the first to move...to arch to his touch...so that he knew...
She wanted him to know that she loved him to infinity...
And he knew ...
Tears of her joy mingled with his tears of grief...that he let flow...after what she had let him know he did not have the heart to keep her out any longer, it was no longer possible...she had won him forever...pulled him out of the doldrums of sorrow he had sunk to...
She felt him loosening his last force of resistance, the walls that he had built around him crumbling to pieces, bit by bit, succumbing to her love...
Nothing existed except for them in that moment of love and its passion, its force, its wantonness, its heavenliness...

"Nani, Chhotey will be here when he is ready to hear more. I have full faith in Khushi, she will bring him here soon..."
"What happened between you and Dadi? Please start reminiscing from the time you regained consciousness on that fatal day..."
Nani let out a deep sigh and said with a far away look in her sorrowful eyes, that glimmered in the light of the candles...
" I got up with a start and found myself on a couch in a huge room...it was as dimly lit as Ratna's room...my heart thumped... where was my daughter? I started screaming for her..."
"A cold hand clamped my mouth and a redshot pair of eyes bore down! Subhadra Mallik whispered fiercely in my ears to calm down and not to make any noise...
"But my daughter...hurry, hurry,' I mumbled in despair, she is in danger, I was too feeble to drag her out of theroom, please save her..."
" At that time I did not know my daughter was no more," Nani sniveled but continued...
"Subhadra's eyes gleamed like a ferocious animal and she clamped her palm more tightly on my mouth, almost suffocating me in the process!
All you are bothered about is your stupid daughter! Do you know my son committed suicide!' "
"I was shattered! I clasped her hand with my trembling one. I cried, "I can your understand your loss Subhadra. I am a mother too! When I saw my son in law lying still with a gun in his hand...! I lost my mind...!"
" But why did he do it, why?" I shook her shoulders in despair.
Subhadra jerked away my hand from her shoulders with disdain and roared in fury, "All because of your manhoos daughter! She was after him all the time...trying to change him and his habits...never gave him a moments happiness or peace...so my poor son killed himself to rid himself of the witch!"
"What are you saying Subhadra!" Tears rolled down my eyes, "My daughter was the only stabilising force in your son's wayward life. She put up with all his ill treatment and bad habits for the sake of their children..."
"Well Ratna will never be rid of my son," Subhadra suddenly let out a sadistic laugh, "because she committed suicide too!" she announced with a flourish!
"I was stunned, the ground under my feet gave way...a darkness enveloped me..."
Nani's words came out in shallow breaths...
"And then my heart burst in pain and i shrieked, but that cant be ! Why would Ratna kill herself! She wanted to live for her children. My daughter was not a weakling! She did not commit suicide Subhadra!"
Nani slumped in her chair, drained...
Anjali hugged her. "Oh Nani...those were the exact words i overheard as i climbed down the stairs after seeing my parents in such a state...i was dazed and have often wondered if i was mistaken, if i had heard right...my mother did not kill herself...she was not a weakling..."
"Oh Nani, " Anjali sobbed great heaving sobs, "We were so close to each other, just separated by a wall...but we coul not share our grief...oh Nani..."
Nani stroked her hair and lamented, "Your baraat had returned, the bridegroom and his family had broken off the marriage, your parents had died shockingly...i cant even imagine the state you were in, you must have been devastated bitiya...I wish I was there for you! But your Dadi did not let me meet either you or Chhotey!"
Anjali lowered her head on her Nani's lap. Sobs racked her body. She stared unseeingly at the curtain of water blurring the windows and her heart filled with a sickening sadness, "And Dadi told me that you were so shocked by Maa's death and my broken marriage that the doctor had kept you under sedation and advised Mamaji to take you home immediately!"
Anjali poured her heart out...
"I have no recollection of where I was, and what i was doing after that...there were loud voices and blaring sirens and darkness...pitch darkness,"Anjali shuddered.
"And then my ears were shattered by someone shouting at me. I forced my heavy lids open, my head spinned i closed them again trying to get back my orientation... And this time i heard Ajit chacha clearly...you manhoos, he screamed at me, get out of my house with that rascal brother of yours! You and your mother have brought ill to our good name! Your baraat returned from Sheeshmahal's doorstep! You are a bad omen, you unwed b****! Get out of Sheshmahal immediately! Kulacchami!
"I stared at him unbelievingly, not being able to comprehend a thing! And then i realized what he was saying. He was telling me to leave Sheeshmahal with Chhotey. And he sounded serious!"
"I trembled like a leaf. What are you saying chacha? How can we leave Sheeshmahal? It is our home! Where will we go? What will we do?
"I don't care you manhoos, just get out of my house! You are a dayan, a witch!"
"I was really terrified and called out to Dadi at the top of my lungs..."
Dadi came rushing into the room and tried to pacify Chacha.
"Ajit please! I told you we can deal with this later...
Chacha turned to Dadi and snarled at her,
" And i told you to keep out of this old woman...or else you know me..." he smiled a smile more dangerous than his scowl.
"I saw Dadi taking a step back. And then she turned and left!"
"I stood their trembling, not believing Dadi had abandoned me! She had never been as expressive in her love towards her grandchildren as Nani, but I had never thought she would leave me at the mercy of Chacha who was hreatening to throw us out of his house.!"
"Some strong force filled my heart and mind as he stood towering over me. My voice was trembling with emotion and unsteady, but i looked straight into my eyes and said,
"How can you accuse me if my baraat left and my marriage was broken? Isn't the bridegroom and his family answerable? Shouldn't you and your society take them to task for leaving me alone in my moment of crisis? Why did my bridegrom runaway like a coward instead of standing by me? Is marriage only a one way lane where the wife will care lifelong for her husband and his family and not even expect a word of sympathy in return? Rather she will be blamed for all crises situations as manhoos, kulachhami, dayan ...!
Chacha roared, "How dare you talk to me like that, you b****! No doubt you have learnt to disrespect your elders from your insolent mother! I will teach you a lesson..!"
"He stepped forward in raging anger and grabbed my hair and started dragging me towards the door...
"I closed my eyes screaming in pain...and then suddenly there was a loud thud! Chhotey had crashed into Chacha and was raining blows on him with his small fists!
Obviously he was no match for the big man but as a result of the initial shock, Chacha loosened hisgrip on me and i heard him yelp!
Chhotey's face was dark with rage and he kept on saying,
"How dare you touch my Di, how dare you hurt her!"
"Chhotey stop! I ran to his rescue! I was scared what Ajit chacha might do to him!
But I was surprised to see my chacha flinging chhotey away and backing away towards the door.
At a safe distance, he hollered to the guards to throw us out of the house.
I hugged my young Chhotey, I had to protect my little brother...
But I knew not overnight my Chhotey had become a man for my little brother looked into my eyes and said calmly, "Don't worry Di, I will look after you and then I will punish the Malliks!"

Her skin was so beautiful...so smooth to his touch, just like he had imagined, and it tasted as sweet as the fresh dew drops on young green leaves, oh how he had loved the taste...he still tended to the young saplings and gazed at the dewdrops but was afraid to taste them...what if they tasted bitter! But now he will taste them again...
He tongued the glowing stretch on her heart, the core of her warmth and sweetness...
And his train of emotions came to a screeching halt!
Taste her! How could he taste her bare skin?! Unless...
Arnav opened his eyes and looked surreptiously at the woman in her arms...
Her eyes were closed, her lips were parted, her swan like neck was arched backwards to allow his ministrations and she was naked up to her waist...
What the! Arnav jerked back and gasped as Khushi collapsed to the floor!
He immediately went down on his knees and stretched a hand to touch her shoulders, but bunched his fist and asked in a hoarse voice, "Tum theek ho Khushi?"
Khushi removed the hair from her face with dainty fingers and pouted,
"Why did you let me fall?"
"I didn't..." he said simply, his eyes misting with guilt. "I am sorry Khushi, I do not know how..." he waved his hand towards her upper body and looked away.
Khushi looked down at herself and gasped! Where was her kameez and braissiere! She saw her clothes strewn on the ground and recovered them quickly! And then she remembered! She had lifted her hands so that he could take them off...unnecessary barriers they seemed when her heart wanted to whisper into his heart how much it loved it...she bowed her head in embarrassment and love..
"I can't believe I took advantage of you," she heard his remorseful voice and frowned...what was he talking about...
She looked at him from under her lashes, he was holding his head between his hands and shaking it with horror!
His eyes were wild, his breathing shallow, he rasped, "Why did you allow me to do this to you Khushi? Why didn't you push me away? Why didn't you just... just slap me, make me stop, dammit!? "
Khushi stared at him as if he was talking Latin! Why would she slap him and push him away when all she wanted was to love him... Men are so strange...she had started believing in the maxim! And this one was particularly ajeeb!
He suddenly turned to her in anger, his eyes a torrent of emotions, as the pelting rain outside...
"I was not in my senses, but what the hell were you doing? Were you rying to be the sacrificial lamb at the altar of pity ? Did you think, poor Arnav's mother was murdered, he is a nervous wreck, let me sacrifice my body to bring him comfort? Dammit, you unbelievable fool!"
This was too much now, her heart jolted! How dare he demean her love...!
"No it was not like that," she screamed back, "I love you dammit you thick headed Arnav Singh Raizada! And I was expressing my love, not pity, get it you unbelievable Laad Governor, you fool...! "
He stared at her stunned! Did she just say...!
That strange word...love...it had no meaning for him, he thought no deeper...
But for a girl with her upbringing it was important he knew...it made him feel worse...for losing his control...for taking advantage of her...
She couldn't love him! There was nothing to it...nothing he could return from the black hole that was his heart...
