Thirty Eight

Randhir didn't like this. He felt tied... like someone was suffocating him. He was bound to one more date with her, and then he'd have to leave her. He didn't like the thought of it. It would hurt her... his nature was hurting her... and he knew that perhaps she didn't see it as pain, but she was stupid. Absolutely stupid. She was just crazy.

He would see her at home, and he wouldn't say a word... she would pay him no attention too. She was such an expert at pretending. She had years of practice after all. There was more than one occasion where he wanted to speak to her, but he maintained his silence, and he told himself it was for her. If he was convinced that it was for her, it was much easier for him to do.

A few days passed, and Randhir with a sigh texted Sanyukta: Tomorrow night, last date?

She replied: Sure. But I'll take you this time.

Randhir raised his eyebrows. So she wanted to take him out? He felt himself smile but stopped himself immediately. What was the big deal if she wanted to take him out? The last date was just a formality... nothing more, nothing less.

He replied: Okay.

Her reply came quickly: Be home by 6.

He replied once again: Okay.

Then he put his phone away and sighed. He still found this texting business stupid when they were living under the same roof, but he had to admit, at least it was proving to be useful. He didn't have to face Sanyukta, and she wouldn't have to invest any more personal emotions on him.

The next day, Randhir saw Sanyukta in the morning, as usual. He didn't say a word to her, and proceeded to make himself breakfast. She didn't even glance at him.

Randhir wondered how she managed to never even look at him, but he shook the thought away. After all, why would he want her to look at him?

He had finished eating and was about to leave to do his work, when he got a phone call from Rehaan.

"Hey buddy," Rehaan said.

"What's up?" he asked, about to open the front door.

"Have you seen the news?" Rehaan asked.

"No," Randhir replied, confused. "What happened?"

"Turn on your TV... there's a curfew going on in Mumbai. It's better to stay indoors... either way, I don't think anyone will show up for the meetings," Rehaan said.

Randhir sighed and took his shoes off.

"Okay, thanks. I'll speak to you later," Randhir told him.

He went to the living room where Sanyukta already had the TV on. It was playing news about the curfew. So Sanyukta was watching the news and she wasn't going to stop him from going out? He didn't know why this bothered him.

Randhir sat down on a couch and had his eyes fixed on the TV.

"When will this curfew be lifted?" he asked out of frustration, to nobody.

"It will last the whole day," Sanyukta told him softly.

He looked up at her, surprised that she was speaking to him. But she was staring at the TV, not at him.

"Oh," he mumbled in response.

"It's advised to not go out," Sanyukta said to him. "But if you want to, I can't stop you."

He looked at her with surprise.

"Do you even care about me?" he blurted out, completely taken aback by the attitude she gave him.

"I abide by this law Randhir... live and let live," she said to him. "I can't stop you from doing something just because I'll get hurt. You know what you're getting into and you have the intellectual capacity to determine for yourself what you can and can't do. I can't stop you."

Then she stood up and was about to leave the living room, when she paused by the doorway and glanced back at him.

"Our date is still on for tonight at six. We'll have it here. I'll cook," she told him, then she went upstairs, leaving Randhir to watch her go, dumbfounded.

Thirty Nine

Randhir knew Sanyukta was cooking downstairs, but he had locked himself in his room and he was browsing the internet on his laptop, trying to avoid her as much as possible. Usually, he would just be out the whole day, but because of this curfew, he was forced to stay inside with her.

Soon it was six and Randhir wasn't sure if he should go down now or if he should wait for her to call him. He shut his laptop and sighed. Why would he even think of putting extra strain on her?

He went downstairs, and the aroma of a nice dinner invaded his nostrils. He breathed in. It smelled so good... his stomach grumbled at the thought of eating.

Sanyukta wasn't there though, so he went to her room and hesitated for a few moments before knocking. There was no answer. Was she even home? He started to get concerned. She couldn't be so stupid to go outside at a time like this.

Randhir turned the door knob and entered her room. She wasn't there. Frowning and worried, he turned around, about to go to his room and call her, but he heard the door to her bathroom creak open.

He turned around again and Sanyukta came out in a towel. Upon seeing him in her room, her eyes widened.

"I - I was just wondering where you were," he stammered nervously in explanation.

Water was dripping from her hair onto her body... onto her silky smooth skin... and those legs. What he wouldn't do to kiss those legs.

Her face turned red.

"I was in the shower," she told him, blushing.

Randhir thought he would probably blush too, seeing the way she looked embarrassed.

"Oh... I'll just go out and... and wait for you to come out then," he told her.

"Wait Randhir," Sanyukta said as soon as he turned around.

"Yeah?" he asked her, turning to face her again.

Big mistake. Seeing her like this did things to him... it made his body react in unfavorable ways. He was avoiding this right now... he couldn't get engaged with her physically, but if she looked like that in front of him, she would be hard for him to resist.

"Can you set the table?" she asked him. "And pour two glasses of red wine."

Red wine. Wow. So Sanyukta was being all fancy tonight. He hadn't changed out of his dress shirt and dress pants from that morning, so he was probably well dressed for this event.

"Yeah, sure," he told her, watching as a water droplet trickled down her collarbone, into her cleavage.

He gulped, feeling desire burn from within him. This wasn't good. It was only Sanyukta who could make him want her like that so quickly, so innocently, without even trying.

"Randhir..." Sanyukta said.

"Yes?" he asked her.

"You may go now," she said, blushing.

"Oh... right... yes... see you downstairs," he said awkwardly, and then turned around to leave, an image of Sanyukta in a towel still fresh in his mind.

As he went downstairs, he felt an overwhelming sense of relief from earlier... he had been worried that she had left the house, but she was safe inside. He smiled without even realizing it, as the image of Sanyukta blushing appeared in his memory. She was so cute. He wished he could watch her blush like that all day, all night... just watching her blush could keep him happy.

Then he shook the thought out of his mind. No way. She was just pretty. That's all. That was why he was thinking about her. It wasn't like he was in love with her or anything. He nearly snorted with laughter at the thought.
