Part 1
Hamida Begum dragged Jodha from her chambers to the latter's and stopped right in front of the temple in Jodha's room.
"A mother can give up her life for her child, Jodha. Why can't you sacrifice your religion?" She demanded angrily. Jodha stood shell-shocked.
In fury, Hamida closed the curtains in the temple separating Jodha from her God.
"Tumhe Islam Qubool karna hi hoga." She announced her harsh decision and stormed out.
If Jodha had been in a dilemma earlier, she was in utter mental chaos now. She squatted down on the floor still not allowing the dam to break. "I have no clue as to what to do. Who do I listen to? My husband whom I love more than anything in this world, my son, who owns my heart, or my mother, whom I have abided by all my life and who loves me like no other."
"Jodha, a messenger who has some news about the ships is here. I have asked her to wait. Should I send her in?" Moti's voice was lost amidst the already loud screams in Jodha's head.
Getting no reaction from her friend, Moti went forward and touched her gently on the shoulder, "Why are you sitting on the floor? Is everything alright? Do you want me to send the messenger away and come later?"
Jodha was shaken to the present, "Huh, no. Send her in. I need to know about the trade. I am alright. I think I need a distraction and this would be an excellent one."
The next few hours, Mariam- uz- Zamani Jodha Begum spent in business and administrative matters forcing her personal issues to the back of her mind.
And that is how her husband found her, when he came in to check on her.
"Hoshiyar, Shehenshah-e-Hind Badshah Buland Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar Tashreef La Rahe Hain"
Jodha looked up from all the paper work and saw Jalal coming towards her in quick, long strides. "Takliya" She said, dismissing all the servants from the area.
"What is my dear wife up to?" He joked. Jalal intended to spend some time with his wife and calm her down. The smile that adorned her face when she looked up and found him wasn't the usual one that lit up her face but a tired one. He was going to try remove the fatigue.
"My dear husband's dear wife was engaged in some work related commitments."
Jalal, purposely and jovially, looked comically shocked and surprised. "I thought I was the only one who worked in this empire. I am pleased others have finally decided to give me a helpin hand." His voice dripped with sarcasm.
"Pardon me, I have ALWAYS worked. In fact, I am not the one canoodling with my spouse. I give more hours to my work than to myself. Was I the one who left the Diwan -e- Khas all of a sudden to give my husband a good morning hug? I think it was that Emperor who did that. The man who rules our kingdom... I..."
Jalal interrupted her, "How dare you? Do you realise speaking ill of your Shehenshah can lead to dire consequences? You will be severely punished for this unpardonable offence." He yelled at her, struggling to keep a straight face.
"Oh, really? Let's see what this great Emperor can do." She looked at him cockily and turned away from him pretending to clear all the papers from the bed. After a moment or two, she felt a movement right next to her. She looked up to find Jalal dangerously close to her and she looked alarmed.
"What the..." She couldn't continue.
She felt Jalal's hands at her waist tickling her. "Oh. No. You can't do that." She yelled and laughed trying to remove his hands. He was playing his trump card, he knew she felt ticklish, more than normal.
"I think I am just doing that." Jalal said evilly.
He tickled her more moving to her stomach, her shoulders, wherever he could lay hands on and Jodha collapsed on the bed, with Jalal still continuing with his punishment.
"Stop." She screamed. "No way. Why would I do that? I have got you exactly where I wanted to." Jalal countered. "This is what happens if you dare to disobey and disrespect your Emperor."
"Okay. Stop. What do you want me to do?" Jodha admitted defeat. She could bear this no more. Her stomach hurt from all the laughter and her limbs ached while trying to ward off her mighty husband.
"Finally. That is where you should be." Jalal gave her a deliberate look of superiority and immediately Jodha looked as if she was ready to take the bait. "Don't. You know, what I can do, if you tell me you anything that you even THINK would offend me, I suggest you think it a hundred and fifty six times over." He warned her, already affected by the laughing look in her eyes and her beautiful countenance lying before him. Despite being married to her for years, Jalal still could not NOT let Jodha affect him.
"Fine. What do you want me to do?" Jodha said, she made her face morose. "I want you to repeat whatever I am saying." Jalal said.
When she urged him to continue, he took complete advantage of the strategic position of both him and her, "I, Mariam-uz-Zamani Begum Jodhabai," and waited for her to repeat, and almost guffawed at the comic look of dread on her face, "herein, in my own chambers," ... "accept fully and finally, that my husband, Shehenshah Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar" now, came the interesting part, "is superior to me in ALL spheres of personal and court life, and I thereby bow down to him and beg for forgiveness for EVERY arrogant word, behavior, action, and thought that I have indulged in, to put him down ever, and, I promise to never speak such a word before or to him that would claim any rights over my non-existent pride and arrogance. I further proclaim that I am thuch' in front of him. I thank him for even allowing me to speak my confession." He finished realizing she had stopped repeating his words.
"What. Didn't I ask you to say I as I asked you to?" He asked perplexed.
Jodha got up from the bed, slowly and caught hold of a cushion and threw it at him. "No way. I am not going to boost your already inflated ego that you are the best. You know too well, I am better than you in EVERY thing I do." She declared.
"And again the lioness challenges the mighty lion." Jalal said, sounding exasperated. "Let us just teach this puny creature a lesson today." And he pounced on her as if she were his prey effectively trapping her between the bed and himself, and Jodha laughed welcoming him while fighting him off.
The issue of conversion still lay, buried under years and years of love and passion.
