Fox Star Studios has released an animated look of Sonam Kapoor in the avatar of Neerja Bhanot. In the comic book look, Sonam is seen as a flight attendant posing smilingly in front of a machine-gun carrying man.
Neerja Bhanot was the flight attendant of the ill-fated Pan Am Flight 73 that was hijacked by four terrorists in Karachi when it arrived there from Mumbai in September 1986. While the three-member American crew in the cockpit fled, Neerja took charge of the security of the passengers.
In a thoughtful move, she hid the passports of the 41 Americans on board. After 17 hours, the hijackers opened fire and set off explosives.
Bhanot opened the emergency door and helped a number of passengers escape. She could have been the first to jump out when she opened the door but she decided not and was shot while shielding three children from a hail of bullets.
Bhanot was recognised internationally as "the heroine of the hijack" and is the youngest recipient of the Ashok Chakra Award, India's most prestigious gallantry award for bravery during peace time.
It's a story that needed to be told to the world. Director Ram Madhavani is now directing the film with Sonam Kapoor in the leading role. Neerja's facial features resembled a lot of Sonam's.
