Nandita Das said this. Can someone tell me how do they become lighter? Fair & Lovely? Peels? Plastic surgery? Or is there some other magical concoction that is only available to them? Is it the umbrella that their assistants carry all the time?

How successful do you think you've been with your 'Dark is Beautiful' campaign?
By default, I became the face of it because most of the actors who were dark have progressively become lighter and lighter with every film. When I joined the campaign, I got so many emails and letters and people literally stopped me on the streets to say 'Thank you for supporting this campaign. It makes me feel better'.

"I don't even get a facial more than once a year. My mother never got her face bleached. She is 72 and has great skin. I stay away from artificial things," she says, and shares that she has had emails from young girls wanting to commit suicide because they were unable to be fair, because they were disappointing their parents, because they would never find the right husband. "I internalise all this so much that I feel I must correct this, so I do the exact opposite. I almost asexualise myself... one reason why I have always worn dheela (loose) kurtas."

"In the film industry, the few dark actresses we had have also progressively become fairer, like Rekha and Kajol."

This is pathetic.

They should ban all those stupid fairness creams and ads. They demean dark-skinned people. You get a job or get married only cause you are fair,W*F!

In india there is very biasd mindset to skin color. Less educated parents and families of rural areas call darker skin as unclear. fair is saaf this wrong thinking has to be removed. A fairer girl can be lesser beautiful than a dark girl but this thinking needs to change from childhood. Boys from early age are fascinated their mind is conditioned to think fair girls are prettier that wrong mindsets has to change from parents and education.

Nothing to do with financial , social or educational status b/c I've seen people from the most elite families with world class education, endorse this colonised mind-set, whole-heartedly. 😡Everyone in this country is BONKERS about being fair!!!!! All of them want milky or light almond hues to make themselves feel better. & subtly put down others. It's absolutely sick & disgusting & makes you want to run away. What's dangerous is cases of young girls being subtly, put down by their own family members even if it all comes from a place of sincerity, teaching a little girl as young as 5, that by putting a certain cream she can achieve desirability, is a highly damaging thing to do. 😡

The fairness bug bit india when the fair aryans invaded brown dravidians. Its in our culture , haldi ceremony before marriage, kesar milk while pregnancy. Even if u ban fairness creams our actress will get treatments from abroad . On the flip side why is it in game to diss fair people these days. Like u dint choose your dark color they dint choose there fair color. We r mixed people of two different race , or mix of lot of different races due to so many invasion. Why should any specific color be endosed as indian color. We have so much variation in our color palette, why cant we just accept all.

Yes it happens in elite families I know people who are from rich educated background for marriage asking if they know any good natured, good family, fair and pretty girl ready for marriage. Fair is considered an asset it comes from childhood the boys are used to that thinking from parents from childhood from television. Kareena is from a rich family a role model for girls she had once fought with bipasha on ajnabee sets she called her kaali billi as an insult. Educated girls if they say kaali to put down someone its the mind conditioning. Fairness creams endorsement by actors and our film lyrics make fair skin superior. Kaali Kaali aankhe gore gore gaal. To describe heroines beauty gori and gore gaal is commonly used in lyrics. The mind is conditioned from years it cant change overnight more awareness required. Say no to fairness cream ads say no to biased lyrics. Today's generation can pass today's better thinking to next generation for that the present generation should stop any discrimination of color.
