I dunno if i managed to put it across properly, but its like no girl has ever felt let down n done something to herself cz she wasn't fair enough.. she would be considered crazy if it happened.. cz she can easily educate herself n make up for the lack of looks, is the popular perception..
Fair, heavier Aryan heritage is coveted, dark skin is not coveted, but not insulted either..
I hope I didn't confuse, but its very difficult to explain something like this..

Lol you did fine. Yes which is why I said Ive always thought it's worst in India b/c not only is lily-white preferred darker shades of skin are criticised so it's a double whammy. I've seen women in my own family who are beautiful. And I don't use such words lightly. But they're dusky , dark wheat complexioned & hence have been relegated to the side or have had to run away from well meaning aunts wanting to smear turmeric-milk/malai on them. The thinking is so insidious that it's scary.

Always found Rani to be extremely attractive &'in Indian wear, esp saris, to be beautiful. Her brandy eyes are quite hypnotic. Always wondered why so many people thought her to be just attractive.

Ugh! I was once suggested by my cousins to use NC 35 foundation for my NC 40 tone. Because only that would make me look faiirr. Sick!

Ugh. You would've looked like a cartoon! Good you didn't listen to them.

Haha!
It's horrible how people perceive that fairness is everything. Nothing to do with education.

We indians are biggest racists in the world..We shed our copius tears when an Indian is insulted in UK/US but do not spare a chance to look down upon an African or our own netizens based on their skin colour. Sadly it often starts at home and by mothers. A young boy learns only to find a fair girl always. A young girl learns to be insecure if her skin colour is dark. I have seen soo many insecure girls in my life..they dont walk out in the open because they will get tanned. They apply thousands of whiteness cream because it will make them "beautiful".
I was asked to have saffron milk, coconut malai and other ridiculous stuff when I was expecting. And my baby was not so fair like me when she was born and many elderly people were bit disappointed and suggested to give her haldi/malai bath everyday until I politely asked them to stop giving f**king advices.
We have to teach our sons and daughters to accept and respect people as they are. Until the mindset changes which obvious starts at home there's little we can expect to change in this society.

I don't consider Nandita Das all that dark.
Anyway one thing I have noticed is the Indian models have more diversity in looks than Bollywood actors
in Bollywood they mostly look for the cookie cutter generic look I have noticed. Some look like clones.
this is dark

Das is often seen around Delhi. I've seen her & she's beautiful. Exactly like how she looks in photos. I've seen foreigners go ga-ga over her & her ethnic Indian looks.
