29. Fight for future

"I try not to think about it, you know?" Khushi says, eating watermelon.

"About what?" Arnav asks.

"Haven't you noticed that yet?" She asks, bewildered. "There are no children left. I wonder if we remaining women can even procreate anymore." There is sadness in her eyes, her juice soaked hands stained her t-shirt when she absently touched her lower abdomen. "It makes me wonder if being alive and not leaving legacy is worse than being a zombie. Why are we fighting if there isn't going to be a future for humanity?"

"Because we have hope. And for that, we fight."

It is interesting that we do not think of procreating at a level that is substantial to a species unless faced with extinction. Having kids is such a personalized and natural decision associated with materialism. And yet, now faced with this war, it is clear that the war might end with them. But would they be willing to leave their kids in this world where they would have to create everything from the scratch with no comfort? What can sustaining humanity achieve when we have already f**ked this planet up so gloriously.

Having children was the most natural progression in a couple's life together but then I have noticed people starting to plan of when it will be appropriate to have children. Do you know what I have noticed? All the planning does not guarantee that you will be able to conceive. I am not putting down couples who feel they need to focus on careers before starting a family but the clock is ticking. I know so many of my friends and relatives who have struggled to conceive because career comes first. Conception is supposed to be a natural thing but they have to resort to all kind of medical help to ensure this process. Some were successful and many were not. I feel that at some point humans are trying too hard to be in control and there is too much planning happening. Even with our children, we are trying to create perfection, putting them in all kind of activities to keep up with the joneses and using social media to showcase the perfect little family. We are not living life and enjoying it as before. We need to be in charge of everything and it has to be perfect. In this quest, we are setting ourselves for failure and harming our environment. Again completely off topic but I like Arnav's answer because without hope, there is no reason to get up and go through the motion. Without hope, you may as well give up and not fight anymore. Why wait for the perfect situation to be established before procreating? Will it not be too late then? What guarantee do they have that the baby will survive after this whole thing is over or if they will be around to have the baby? All species' survival depend on their procreation ability. So are there more girls than just Kushi and Payal who survived?

It isn't necessary now to step out of the house and have a meaningful conversation because the same can be done via GTalk where the parties can talk whenever. Unless of course there is some romance involved 😊

The reason I wrote this part was even with already escalated number of modes of communication, there still exists the alienation from said comrades. I have this friend who I met via IF and we spoke pretty much daily. If not anything, just a hello and how are you. In the busy schedules we all seem to have, it really doesn't take that much time. I call bullshit when people say "oh, I was busy." No, you aren't. No one really is that busy. You just didn't choose to talk because that's not your priority. And that is okay.

So don't say "I am busy I couldn't talk to you". Tell people "I am sorry I couldn't talk because I didn't want to. I had other priorities to look into." Tell them "I cant talk right now because my mind isn't giving me a moment of reprise." Be truthful. If the person is your friend, they will understand and wait for you to talk to them. And if they give you bitchface, move on.

Unnecessary ramblings. 😆

This is so true. I prefer people being brutally honest than feed me a line of shitty excuses . . .

I don't know. This update has again left me in a quandary. If they juggle with the decision to leave behind a legacy, where is the guarantee that their children endure in a world that they no longer recognize? I mean as it is, they are already battling for basic necessities like food and water. Are they willing to leave their children behind to fend for themselves and begin like the early man, supposing they die along with the plague or are in a grave possibility of doing so (which is at the moment)?

I have a question: Arnav says they have hope. So that suggests that they may as well end up victorious. How are the remaining zombies getting wiped off? The existing zombies are killing other people and they have clearly outnumbered the surviving humans. How are they planning to end the war?

I wouldn't always say its materialism. It is so wrong for women to choose their career for few years so that they can provide for their children better? As a parent, they would want to give them the best they can. If its not possible for them to have kids living in a very small home, isn't that better?

Sure, people think materialistically. They have their ambition, their own personal agenda to get over with before they want to bring kids to the fold. Besides, an entire generation don't need to procreate just to ensure we don't run out of resources.

As I mentioned above - is it really that bad to wait to have a child? Yes, it causes problems. But isn't it better to wait it out and see if they can bring a child to their lives when the parents are struggling in their own careers? In India, day care is shit. Most of them mushroomed after IT boom and many aren't to be trusted. If a couple cannot afford investment on quality daycare, isn't it better if they wait till they can afford good daycare? We cannot disregard struggle people have to go through to make a good living and provide for their children. So no. I don't think we live in a world where the natural order of things is going to fly. Its better to wait than to have children and struggle with care. But if a couple can do it well, then sure.

Being a child isn't enough anymore. They need to have a musical talent, some sort of hobby etc so that they are "well rounded". I have no idea what that means.

I am still in process of writing this story and answers to all the questions will come eventually.

The tide has changed. In this post-apocalyptic world family planning, contraceptives, abortion, etc. are probably going to be termed illegal, no?

At this point, there are no children.

Margaret Atwood's - A handmaid's tale deals with exact same problem. Women who are around just for the sake of procreating.
