Hi all,

My second thread here.
The FIRST one was about Chanakya.
Here is the Link : Chanakya

It was Chanakya whose astounding TALES of strong intellect got me attracted here, a shrewd and VERY smart person who could turn the tables in a split second a la Bismarck or a cunning Machiavelli who could be RUTHLESS to his opponent. MORE than Ashoka at the FIRST place, his political intellect, far-sight and understanding impressed me.

Though, now it's getting interesting to read about others also, and i am enjoying the history of Ashoka too.

Historicals these days, seem to apply a lot of dramatization. Ashoka is not far behind. While Bindusara knew about the identity of Ashoka since the birth as his son, the show is portraying the opposite. Dharma was made a Chief Queen before birth of Ashoka, but here Dharma is shown as an ill-treated woman.

Here is an interesting read about the story of REAL Ashoka , Dharma and Bindusara.
It contains scans from the Sanskrit texts, and the probable translation.

Gave the link here too:

Indeed, the tale was interesting. Ashoka was disliked by his father, it seems from the account, due to his "dark complexion". All these are Buddhist tales, and they need to be taken with a pinch of salt. It is the rock edicts of Ashoka which are completely certain in revealing his history. The Buddhist texts which were written till about 3rd century AD often vary in the details about Ashoka's life.

The cast of Ashoka is very good. Two people, whose acting i liked a lot. The Kid Siddharth has been able to live up to the expectations, at least in my opinion. Manoj Joshi is another person whom i liked as Chankaya. Bindusara and Dharma too.

TFS such an interesting story :)

Dharma was the chief queen and still she is suffering so much. Ashoka is a prince and still he is suffering so much.

Initially when the show started, it was so full of action and the episodes used to be happening ones. But this Dharma death track is being dragged endlessly. 😕 Makers should realise that now viewers are getting irritated. Viewers know that it is Nirjara who died in Dharma's place. Then why maintain the so-called suspense for so many days? Why don't they now reveal that Dharma is alive and unite her with Bindusara and Ashoka?

Chanakya - supposed to be ruthless. But in this show, he is perhaps the most emotional character. He is always questioning himself, feeling guilty and repenting his actions. He is easily outwitted by Helena. And he is always shedding tears. True, his acting is very good. But if we compare him with the real CHanakya then there is a vast difference. 😲

Hopefully Dharma and Bindusara will get united soon and then we may see the story you shared coming true.

Incidentally, there is a character called Radhagupta who is the disciple of Chanakya in the show.
Radhagupta was a minister in Ashoka's time. Don't know if this is the same as mentioned above.

The show's story is no doubt twisted but I think the story in this link is also not true.

The link states that dharma's father gave her daughter to the king Bindusara because she was very beautiful whereas when bindusara was just a prince when he married dharma and Chandragupt Maurya was the king at that tym.

Hi,

All these are Buddhist tales as i mentioned in my post itself.
They need to be taken with a pinch of salt. :)

These are not contemporary texts, hence they refer Bindusara as "King" Bindusara , perhaps to show a sense of honor or to give an Imperial touch.

As per the text, the reason of Dharma's wedding with Bindusara is NOT her beauty, but the prophecy that she would marry a King & that, her son would be a "Chakravartin Samrat". :)

Hence, her father got her married to Bindusara, who was obviously going to be a ruler.

Radhika,
Thanks for this concise post.

Since, i am not watching the show, hence my reply is based only on what you and others wrote on the previous Chanakya thread. The dragging of Nirjara-Dharma track has started taking it's toll. The plot got a bit boring. Initially , i remember , even if we missed a single episode, it looked like we missed a lot, but now the storyline is so stagnant that it seems not much is missed even if we don't read many WU's.

He was a practical person not at all emotional. Unique, Individualistic and slightly 'Egocentric'. > He was not a mystic, but a mysterious person. > He was a good friend to a friend but not a friendly person. > He could go to any extent to guard his ward, but was not a fatherly figure. Then what he was ?

I don't think 100's of thinkers and theorists combined would be able to do justice to his persona. He had varying personality.

Quoting Chanakya from Arthashastra -> " Treat your child like a darling for the first 5 years. For the next 5 years, scold them. By the time they turn 16, treat them like a friend. Your grown up children are your best friends."

Now, contrast the case with the REEL one where he was almost ready to shed tears for separating Ashoka from Dharma. I would say, though history was not followed here, but the performance by cast was fantastic, and Chanakya was STRONG till this track, which i enjoyed. I wish this will continue. CAS was fresh till i watched it. :)

Ayushi,
Not watching it, so do not know what is going to happen. But in my opinion, they should unite Ashoka with Dharma soon, and as Radhika said in an old post, perhaps announcing the REAL identities of A and D are the only solutions left with C as they are not safe now.
