Misery

Sometimes, in order to fix something you need to break it again. It makes you wonder whether it was worth the pain when you have limped along just fine.

The windows were wide open, the curtains flailing as if possessed. The full moon's light illuminated the mess in the room and its solitary occupant.

Ragini Khanna" or Ragini Patel, now that the divorce papers were signed, lay on the bed staring into the space.

She felt naked without her wedding ring, having thrown it in a fit of anger. But she would keep the pendant. The first gift he had ever gotten for her.

Life can be so unexpected. From a state of euphoria, one can turn to anguish in the matter of a few words. She had lost everything, everything.

Circumstances had twisted in a way and the signed papers on the floor were a product of it. She couldn't even sleep. Everytime she closed her eyes a particular scene came to her mind. Neil walking away.

Everytime she turned around and kept her hand on the bed, it would be a cold reminder of the person who left her, leaving that vacancy in her heart which she knew would never be filled by someone else.

Every single thing she did brought his memories back along with a fresh flood of tears.

A few years ago she was crazy in love. At that time she had not realised how dangerous love was. If ever anything went wrong they would be two broken vessels, devoid of any soul now that they were incomplete.

Everytime he was even near paper her heart would worry. She couldn't bear it even if he got a simple paper cut. That was the type of love they shared. So deep, that it was terrifying. Maybe it was a lesson from life. Maybe she had done something wrong that she was being punished so cruelly.

One day she was going to wake up and not think of the man she once loved. She would be strong for her children, no matter how harsh she would be on people.

But not today. The wound was fresh and the ghost of his memories still haunted her. But she doubted if it would ever heal and if the ghosts would leave. After all, Neil had a way of annoying her even when he was not around.
