Technical Tuesday | Humsafars | Dubbing
Technical Tuesday, is where we bring you technical aspects of making a show. In Humsafars, we were present when a dubbing for a scene was to happen. We captured the dubbing that Harshad Chopda, who plays Saahir Azim Choudhary, did for a particular scene.
The scene in question was where Saahir asks Aarzoo to also take him in the taxi along with her, when they leave the venue as he hates to drive. Of course, there is a reason for him not driving and that perhaps one will find out soon enough.
As the scene was shot in exterior, there was lot of ambience which interfers and it had to be dubbed. As Harshad also clarifies, one cannot just dub one line from a scene as the difference in the sound quality is glaringly obvious, hence the whole scene then has to be dubbed.
Dubbing is a process of re-recording the dialogues for a scene. The artists see the scene on screen and hear the dialogue on the headphone to get the exact nuance that was spoken while shooting the sequence. Of course, the pitch, intonation and volume need to be controlled as it has to match the mood of the scene. That is where Dubbing is a difficult aspect.
Dubbing, mixing, or re-recording, is a post-production process used in filmmaking and video production. In which additional or supplementary recordings are "mixed" with original production sound to create the finished soundtrack. The process usually takes place on a "dub stage." After Sound Editors edit and prepare all necessary tracks (dialogue, ADR, effects, Foley, and music), the dubbing mixer or mixers proceed to balance all of the elements and record the finished soundtrack. "Dubbing" is sometimes confused with automated dialogue replacement (ADR), also incorrectly known as "additional dialogue recording",in which the original actors re-record and synchronize audio segments. Outside of the film industry, the term "dubbing" most commonly refers to the replacement of the voices of the actors shown on the screen with those of different performers speaking another language.
