7 Times Bollywood Directors Brought Out The Best In These Actors

Do you ever wonder why actors are so inconsistent with their performances? In one film, they deliver a stellar performance, proving to the world that they've finally arrived. It seems like they've finally gotten better as an actor and you start to believe they would be at least as good if not better in the films to come. But it comes as a shock when you see those same nuanced actors deliver embarrassingly poor performances in the films to come despite the characters being way simpler and uni-dimensional. Is it really the actor's fault? We think, the actor's calibre is for the director to harness. An actor can be as good as the director believes him/her to be, and these 8 directors prove it!

1. Deepika Padukone - Cocktail' And Finding Fanny' (Homi Adajania)

Illuminati-Films

Even after 13 odd films in Bollywood, Deepika Padukone was still considered wooden', until Homi Adajania showed us what a brilliant actor she was. Cocktail' and Finding Fanny', both completely different in their own ways, proved Deepika could add as much substance to a big budget rom-com as to an offbeat coming-of-age film. It was hard to imagine that the same actor would deilver the worst performance of her career - Happy New Year' (due credits to Farah Khan), after impressing us with such nuanced performances.

2. John Abraham - Madras Caf' (Shoojit Sircar)

J.A.-Entertainment

With every movie during his ten years in the industry, John Abraham only reiterated the fact that models cannot act. But Shoojit Sircar proved us all wrong with Madras Caf'. John Abraham finally looked comfortable in front of the camera, his screen presence was noteworthy and his performance impactful, in contrast to the one and a half expressions he had been relying on for most of his previous films.

3. Shahid Kapoor - Kaminey' and Haider' (Vishal Bhardwaj)

UTV-Motion-Pictures

He is much more than a chocolate boy who can dance well, and it took a long while for Bollywood to understand that. Shahid Kapoor would have never discovered the most important dimension to his own personality as an actor had it not been for Vishal Bhardwaj's vision. One look at all his senseless rom-coms and you know he has been largely wasted as an actor.

4. Sonakshi Sinha - Lootera' (Vikramaditya Motwane)

Balaji-Motion-Pictures

Lootera' was not just one of the best films Bollywood has seen in recent times, it proved Sonakshi Sinha's calibre as an actor. Before Lootera' and sadly even after it, Sonakshi Sinha has always been reduced to a caricature of an over-the-top loud Punjabi girl who adds no substance to the film. It was Vikramaditya Motwane's conviction in her that brought out the coy, lovelorn Bengali woman in her, giving way to a splendid performance. Now that we've seen her potential, we're really waiting for the day she finds the right director once again.

5. Katrina Kaif - Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' (Zoya Akhtar)

Eros-International

Bagging some of the most successful films every year only for her breathtaking beauty, Katrina Kaif has never been looked up to as an actor, but only an arm-candy for our heroes. Disappointing us in the simplest of roles, Katrina almost made us believe she doesn't have it in her. Zoya Akhtar has been the only director till now who has brought out a credible performance from Katrina Kaif in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'. It may not be a challenging enough role, but like they say, it's not about how hard the task is, it is about how well you do it. And we must say, Katrina did pull it off pretty well. Too bad, she never got to work with a director as good as Zoya and she seems have got back to playing furniture in all her films, all over again.

6. Aishwarya Rai - Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', Devdas' And Guzaarish' (Sanjay Leela Bhansali)

SLBFilms

Even though she has always been known as the most beautiful woman in the world, there are only a handful of films that prove her credibility as an actor of substance. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is one of the few directors who have managed to bring out the best in Aishwarya, who has otherwise always been a diva before an actor.

7. Priyanka Chopra - Barfi' (Anurag Basu)

UTVMotionPictures

Now, there's no denying that Priyanka Chopra is a prolific actor. But it is almost hard to ignore how she can be so impeccable in a Barfi' and still manage to pull off a performance as outdated as the one in the Krrish' series, that makes her look like she still hasn't come out of her Andaaz' days yet.

Ranbir should have been mentioned for Barfi too. That was definitely his best performance. And what about Ranveer for Lootera?

Aish in HDDCS? I personally found her OTT with her fake laugh and exaggerated expressions. And in my opinion, Kat's best performance was in Namastey London not ZMND. Oooh and they should have included Kareena for Jab We Met. Geet was/is her most memorable role.Other than that the list looks great 👍🏼

What was so great about Katty in ZMND except that she was barely there?

The director should not get the full credit though. Yes these actors did well because of the direction..but if they had no talent they would have fallen flat on their face.
List is missing Kareena from JWM and Talaash. Shahid from JWM. And Alia in Highway. Sonam from Raanjhana should be up there too.

Katrina was good in ZNMD because her acting was very natural.

IMO, Aishwarya's best performance was in Raincoat. She was absolutely effortless and natural.

She blinks too much and makes the performance look so unnatural. I was so distracted by the constant blinking she was doing during emotional scenes. It was a challenging role only by Katrina standards, and we know how low they've been set. This article nails it beautifully. Her and Ash. Ash still has some memorable performances.
