If there was a chance
That we could be lovers
I'd write you a book
Of handwritten letters
And burn them all up to the end
Just to start over again

It hadn't taken long for Pragya to pack.
Six salwar suits.
A toothbrush.
Her toiletries bag.
An extra pair of shoes.
Her documents file.
It had taken even less time for her to come to a decision if there truly even was a decision to make.
No matter what had gone on in that house, Daadi had always been there for her. This much she owed her.
Hesitation stilling her hands for a second, Pragya's heart wavered for a second, and then just as she was about to turn away, she picked up one other file, and packed it into the very bottom of her suitcase.
It was time.
An hour ago she'd railed at the injustice of a God who would force her to endure her farce of marriage one last time. But that was then. Now, she was calmer, more resigned.
Now she was open to the belief that maybe there really was method to Abhi's madness.
Maybe there was a reason fate was taking her back.
Two years ago, she would have called this a sign.
Today, she saw it for what it truly was - an opportunity to finally move on.

That we could be lovers
I'd learn how to dance
And to hold without touching

For the first time in years, Abhi felt like a gauche teenager, on his first date.
Half of him couldn't believe she was here, beside him and felt an irrepressible need to look over at her every few minutes. Not that she'd notice, she'd looked at him once, when he'd leaned over to help her with her seatbelt, and ever since had maintained a silent vigil of her side of the highway.
The other half was terrified, waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Yes, her anger had been intense, her sarcasm terrifying and yet, this silent acceptance, was scarier, if only because it reminded him of three years ago, when her placid disposition had lulled him into a sense of surety, until that one moment when he realized she wasn't a sure thing at all.
Only then, the realization had been too late.
He sometimes, used to lie in bed wondered how late he'd been.
An hour? Two?
As he looked over at her yet again, looking longingly at her shuttered eyes, and softly pursed lips as she discreetly blew steam onto the already misted glass, Abhi caught himself silently praying, that he wasn't too late today.
Swallowing convulsively, Abhi focused his eyes back on the dark highway, as he silently added -
Please.

Oh love
Where have you been
I'll wait for your lead to come in

Clutching her shawl slightly closer to herself, Pragya leaned her forehead against the cool glass of the car window, the blur of Mumbai's city lights already blinding her.
The last time she had made this journey, she recalled with a bite of cynicism, it had been so under very different circumstances. She had been running then. In ways, she had been running everyday since then. What was worse was the realization that she had no idea how to stop.
God what a fool she'd been, she admitted a self-conscious sigh escaping, only to fog up her glasses as it did.
Carefully, sneaking a glance from under her lashes, Pragya ensured that Abhishiek still had his eyes firmly on the road as she inched herself a bit closer to her window, as she silently if childishly blew carefully on the window pane.
It was winter the last time she'd made this journey as well.
Rubbing her eyes fiercely, Pragya sat up a little straighter, this wasn't last time.
Last time she had been alone, and broken.
Last time she had, had the luxury of tears and anonymity.
This time she had none of that. For once, Pragya found herself wondering, as her eyes stole yet another glance at Abhi's tired visage, how hard it must be to be watched every second of your life - she'd broken in fifteen minutes, before she'd escaped - he had no escape.

So tell me the secret
Is there a way into your heart
'Cause I want to believe it
Oh will I be wishing
Until the last falling star

One Year Ago, Mumbai
"Di, did you at least try talking to him?"
"What do you think I've been trying to do for the past three months Bulbul?" Pragya snapped uncharacteristically.
The cold wind biting at her upturned face, Pragya closed her eyes, as she added in a hoarse whisper - "I can't face this too. Not anymore. Please."
And just like that, her hands were gripped tightly, in a show of sisterly support as her baby sister reached up and wiped away tears she hadn't even realized she'd shed.
"What do you want Di?"
I want to have been enough for him.
I want to have been the one.
"I want it to end."

And keep going further
I'd hold my breath until
You slipped those words
That belong on your lips
