There was a time, there was a place
But there was fear inside
_________________________________________________________
As a Rockstar, Abhi, was usually more acquainted than most with the concept of apprehension, or fear. In ways fear was a constant shadow, one that followed him onstage, every time he was about to perform.
That fear however, cowered in the face of the chilling terror he had felt a week ago when the doctor had told him all they could do now was make Daadi comfortable. Daadi meant everything for him. She always had.
She had been the only person who saw him, and loved him for who he was instead of how much he was worth. As a soon to be aging Rockstar, Abhi knew very well that his fame and fans were both about to become very fickle. Hell, everything around him was fickle, everything but Daadi.
And he'd let her down.
When the delusions had set in, courtesy of her Alzheimer's, Abhi had almost been relieved. For the first time in so long, she had begun to look at him without that stark look of regret marring her vision.
Not that he hadn't deserved it.
He did.
He'd wronged her.
He knew that.
That, was what had kept him from coming to her for so long.
That and the fact that he had no idea where she was - not that, that was really an obstacle, Abhi' was still a big enough name, that one televised pitch to his fans would have rooted her out faster than any Police APB, or nearly useless Private Eye. Not that he would have had to go that far.
Purab knew.
He hadn't pushed Purab, because he hadn't wanted to be the reason she lost faith in yet another person. But if he had, had to. He would have. Abhishiekh Mehra had not become the Rockstar he was today, by fumbling through other people's feelings.
He'd gotten here through fear.
Fear of failure to be exact.
Not that, that particular fear applied here, he'd already failed her, he admitted as he turned his attention back to the road.
Hell, one year ago today - he'd unwittingly destroyed her.

A parachute of pride

One Year Ago, Mumbai
"Come on, Fuggy!"
Her eyes narrowing dangerously as she stormed back into their room, or his room, Pragya suddenly stopped and turned on her heel. " Is this your idea of a joke?"
Crossing his arms defensively in front of him, Abhi, ignored her pointed question, "You know most women would be flattered to have been bought a Mansion in the heart of Mumbai. It's beautiful you know," he teased, poking playfully at her own crossed arms, "It's a five minute walk from Purab's house, close to us here, so you can come see Daadi whenever you want and it has it's own strip of the beach out front."
"Abhi..."
Her hand fisted at her sides, Pragya raised her eyes to his, hoping against hope that he would put a stop to this nonsense.
Oh God, please don't let him be so blind.
"- and," Abhi interrupted, as if making a sales pitch to a investor, the house comes, fully staffed, with two cars, a chef - Ramu kaka's nephew I think, and -"
"You?"
"Better." Abhi promised, his tone softening ever so slightly at her impulsive intrusion.
"My Bank Account. Alimony. Pragya, you'll never have to work another day of your life. None of your family members will." Added Abhi, carefully gasping her shoulders, as he forced her now vacant eyes up to his, "We both knew this had to end. We couldn't go on faking forever right, Chashmish?"
Pragya flinched noticeably at his use of her long forgotten nickname, carefully stepping out of his grip as she nodded stoically - "Of course not... That's hardly fair, for you, but I wanted-"
"- Abhi! I just heard the news! I can't believe you've ..." squealed Tanu, her voice dulling into a dull murmur for Pragya as she watched the other woman bound uninvited into the room, throwing herself into Abhi's arms as she had done a hundred times before.
For the first time though, Pragya watched with more than mere amusement, or inexplicable jealousy. For the first time she watched with realization.
We couldn't go on faking forever...
He was right. Her eyes watching as, Abhi unsuccessfully tried to untangle himself from Tanu, confusion marring his usually laughing eyes. This was her fault. Pragya's fault. That confusion, this elaborate scheme to find a way out - this was her fault.
Biting fiercely down on her bottom lip, Pragya took a measured step backward.
We both knew this had to end.

To cross the line takes a tiny step
But will the spark cause the bridge to burn
_________________________________________________________
One Year Ago, Mumbai
Of all the people in the world, the one person Abhi really did not want to deal with right then was Tanu. Seriously, could the woman not take a hint?
He'd spent four hours at her house last night, explaining to her why they' really didn't make sense anymore and she took that as her cue to come running into his arms, while he tried admittedly selfishly, to at least make amends for all the ways he'd wronged, his reluctant wife, and ...
His temper severely frayed, Abhi, none too gently pushed Tanu off him, brushing his hair back irritably as he unconsciously mimicked his wife from moments ago and stepped backward.
"Abhi!" pouted Tanu, making to reach for him again, before she noticed his warning glare.
Confused, and still relatively new to being denied anything by Abhi, Tanu, reassured him, generously, "... Babe, I forgive you...besides, it's not like you haven't made it up to me, I mean when I turned on the news I could hardly believe it - but now -"
"Tanu!" Abhi interrupted sharply, "What news?"

My fear entwined with my regret
I beat a path for safe return

"Do you want to go see your family first?"
It was the first thing he's said to her since they'd left Pune. Pushing her hair out of her face, Pragya fought back a yawn, a quick glance at the sun rising from behind the scores of skyscrapers telling her unequivocally that they were back in Mumbai.
She was back.
"How is Daadi now?" she asked instead, knowing instinctively that he would have checked in on her sometime during the drive, probably when she'd dozed off.
"She's on life support Pragya, she's hardly likely to make a miraculous recovery." He replied, the raw grief, in his voice palpable.
Life support.
For all her degree's, Pragya hadn't truly understood what that meant until he broke it down to her hours ago in her tiny drawing room.
Daadi.
Vibrant, Loving, Daadi - was holding on because of a machine.
In all likelihood, she wasn't even going to realize that Pragya had come. But Abhi had had to ask.
And despite everything, she was glad he had.
A year ago, she hadn't gotten the chance to say goodbye.
She wouldn't have been able to live with herself if she didn't do so today.
Valiantly fighting back tears, she answered in a voice so low Abhi had to strain to hear, "Daadi - take me to Daadi. Please."
