Chandralekha is the story of two girls called Chandra and Lekha who are mixed up at birth.
Chandra (Shwetha Bandekar) - a reporter at Pena Munai magazine. The biological daughter of Ashokkumar - Vasundharahowever she is raised by Azhagu and Meena. Initially Meena who is the only one aware of the birth
mix up does not accept Chandra as her daughter. However her mind set changes when Chandra
saves her from a road accident and bears the fall herself. One day Chandra comes across Lekha and
disliking her character and actions, starts to oppose her and her mother Vasundhara. Furthermore,
after hearing her mother Meena's pitiful pastshe is also intent in getting justice for her mother from
Vasundhara andhalf the share of Ramanathan'sproperties. Chandra is her father Azhagu's pet and
grows up into a matured young woman.
Lekha (Nagasri) - a spoilt brat raised by wealthy socialites Ashokkumar and Vasundhara Devi,
But the original daughter of Meena and Azhagusundaram. Influenced by her adoptive
mother she too grows up as an arrogant and selfish young woman. Unknown to her,
her real mother Meena has been always observing her from afar. One day to fulfill a bet
she slaps Meena on the street without knowing who she is. She also orders a friend
Thenmozhi to impersonate her and complete her examinations. When her offences are
brought to light by Chandra, she attempts suicide but is saved. Currently it is arranged
for her to marry Varun, the son of Vasundhara's brother.
Meena (Meenakumari) and Azhagu Sundaram (Rishi) who along with Chandra form
a middle income family. Meena was an orphan left in the ashram who was adopted by
a businessman Ramanathan and his wife Abhirami who had no children. Soon after adopting
Abhirami gave birth to Ashokkumar. Meena is very caring to her family but is forced to move
away with her laborer husband Azhagu because of Vasundhara's insecurity, promising to never
ask for a share in her adoptive father's fortune. Meena soon gives birth to Lekha but Fate causes
Lekha to be raised in Vasundhara's household. However Meena's love for Lekha has never
diminished even when Lekha mistreated her. Azhagu is unaware of the situation however and
thinks the world of Chandra whom he addresses as Kuttyma. Later Meena comes to accept Chandra
as her daughter as well. Right now her only prayer to God is for her birth daughter and adopted
daughter to get along. She is in a dilemma of whether to bring the birth mix up to light. Meena is
also hesitant to let Chandra marry Varun when she knows of his intentions.
Ramanathan (Suresh Krishnamoorthy) and Abhirami (Dubbing Janaki), parents of Ashok. They adopted Meena from an ashram
before having Ashok according to the astrologer's instructions. However they treat
Meena as their own daughter but they are forced to be distant from her due to
Vasundhara's enmity with Meena.
Ashokkumar (Saakshi Siva), the only son of Ramanathan and Abhirami. Even though Meena is adoptedhe thinks the world of her and considers her as his true sister. However when he
marries Vasundhara, his love for Meena is put to the test. As a result he and his parents
have lived for 20 years separately without any contact from Meena. He loves his daughter
Lekha but disapproves of Vasundhara spoiling her. Sadly he is unable to speak out against
his wife Vasundhara.
Vasundhara Devi - a wealthy socialite and an arrogant tyrant in her home who makes all the decisions and expects
full obedience. Both she and Meena gave birth on the same day. However Vasundhara unknowingly
raises Meena's daughter Lekha into a mini version of herself. Lekha is the only person whom Vasundhara
loves unconditionally. She is the one who chased Meena out of the house twenty years ago after being irritated
with her constant presence and forbids her parents in law and husband from seeing Meena and her husband.
She is horrified to find Meena's daughter Chandra opposing her and Lekha despite their status and wishing to
receive half of her father in law's fortune. Ironically she doesn't realise it is her own daughter she is fighting, though
She acknowledges Chandra is brave like herself.
Rajasekar, Varun's father and Vasundhara's brother who raised her since young.They now share a distant family due to the constant competiton between them on
who is wealthier. While he is eager to make Lekha his daughter in law to gain
Vasundhara's affluence he is also wary of his sister. He is also the one who loaned
Ashok money to save his business 20 years ago.
Lakshmi, Varun's mother and Rajasekar's wife. She was the "Shaguni" who started the enmity between
Meena and her own sister in law Vasundhara, and building Vasundhara's insecurities. She is currently
waiting to take revenge on Vasundhara who looked down her for having less wealth by marrying Varun
to Lekha.
Varun - Son of Rajasekar and Lakshmi, nephew of Vasundhara. Earlier he fell in love
with Lekha but she rejected him and drove him to suicide. Chandra helps him in his time of need.
In return Varun informsChandra of Lekha and Vasundhara's schemes. His parents order him to marry Lekha
but he falls in love with Chandra.
Sree Ram - Chandra's childhood friend and photographer at Pena Munai magazine.
Latha Akka, Sree Ram's mother and Meena's neighbour who knows the truth about Chandra and Lekha's birth. She is a close confidante and advisor of Meena.
Vinothan, head of Pena Munai magazine, Chandra's boss who is very caring to his staff.Cinema Subbu - a colleague of Chandra inPena Munai Magazine who ends up becoming a spy for Vasundhara.
