Thanks for the compliments Poonam. Yes, that was the idea...to connect the story back to previous things that have happened. Hopefully it will continue to make sense. I will try to post the next update asap.

Sorry I am so late commenting NIvi, it's been a pretty rough week😕, I think I must have caught whatever KT has in your FF.

Anyway, great update as usual. Love Rachna caring for KT.
Felt a little melancholy reading about their munchkin😭 They were so happy to be expecting. I hope you give us a medical miracle before you finish up😉
Gayatri is a piece of work. I cannot wait until you let us in on her reasons for wishing ill for our RaBir; her comeuppance will welcomed (and celebrated) by all of us.
Looking forward to your next update.
Thanks for the PM.

No worries Kelly. Glad that you managed to catch the update, but your health most certainly comes first. Hope you are feeling better now. Sending over some warm soup and hugs for you.
A medical miracle at the end? I think I can probably make that happen. 😆😉
Gayatri's downfall is slowly approaching. I think you will like the next few updates a lot since everything will tie in together. 😃
Thank you for reading my dear and take care of yourself. 🤗

Chapter 42:

"Arrey, the phone has been ringing for so long! Why doesn't someone answer it already?! Ufff! I have to do everything around here!"

Seema grumbled and complained as she made her way to the phone. Seeing that no one else was around to answer the call, she picked it up.

"Hello?"

"Hello, Sneha aunty? Is that you?"

"Ji nahi, this is Seema Garg, Rachna's chaachi. Who is this?"

"Oh namaste Seema aunty. This is Chaya, Rachna's friend. You remember?"

"Oh Chaya beta? Yes of course I remember you; you came to Indore with Rachna and Pihu one summer. How are you beta? I heard you got married recently. Congratulations."

"Thank you aunty. I'm fine. How are you?"

"I'm also good beta. Anyways, what made you call so early in the morning?"

"I wanted to talk to Rachna. I was trying her cell phone but it seems to be out of reach; I guess she must have forgotten to charge it."

"Rachna? But why are you calling her? She's already at your house right?"

"What? No aunty, why would Rachna be here?"

"Nahi Chaya beta. Rachna called Sneha last night and said that she was staying over at your house since your husband was going out of town and you didn't want to be alone."

"Seema aunty, I don't really know what's going on right now, but I assure you that there has been some sort of mistake. I haven't seen Rachna in quite some time. Anyways, I guess I'll call back later. Bye."

Seema hung up the phone and immediately made her way into Sneha's bedroom, where Sneha was sitting and chatting with Gunjan. Seeing Seema enter the room so suddenly and looking a bit miffed, Sneha stood up confused.

"Seema ji? What's wrong? Is everything all right?"

"Sneha, where's Rachna?"

"Seema ji, I told you last night that Rachna is staying with her friend Ch..."

"Don't lie to me Sneha. Where is Rachna?"

Sneha became flustered. "Seema ji, voh...actually Rachna...she..."

"Just tell me the truth Sneha. Rachna has been out of the house for the entire night. She's getting married in less than one month Sneha! Where is she?"

"Kabir was sick Seema ji; he had a very high fever. Rachna only went to check on him but she couldn't leave him alone after seeing how ill he was. She was just taking care of him last night."

Seema became furious. "You let her stay with Kabir all night! Sneha, what the hell is wrong with you?!? Kabir already has his brother to take care of him. Why did you let Rachna stay there? Don't you know that the bride and groom are supposed to stay away from each other before the wedding? But of course, this is Mumbai. And this is where people are allowed to live together and even have children before marrying. If you let your own daughter do all this then why would you stop Rachna? After all, she's not your own blood."

Sneha stared at Seema with tears in her eyes, dumbfounded by the vicious accusations that had just been hurled at her upbringing.

"Seema aunty! That's enough! How dare you say that my mom treats Rachna di differently? My mom has loved Rachna di like her own daughter, in fact even more than that. Whatever you do, don't even think about raising a finger at my mom's love for Rachna di!"

Seema glared at Gunjan, who stared back with equal intensity. Sneha wiped away her tears and touched Gunjan's shoulder.

"Gunjan beta, relax. It's not good for you to take so much stress. Sit down."

"But mom, h..."

"Enough Gunjan. Please stop now; go to your room and I'll just come in a few minutes."

Gunjan reluctantly left the room on her mother's insistence. As soon as Gunjan had left, Sneha joined her hands together apologetically.

"Seema ji, I'm sorry that I lied to you last night. Rachna called and informed me that Kabir was not feeling well and that he had a very high fever. I gave her permission to stay and take care of him because I felt that it was the right thing to do at the time. I'm sorry if you don't agree with my decision, but I have already spoken to Rachna this morning and she is on her way home since Kabir is feeling better now. I apologize on behalf of Gunjan since she raised her voice at you, but Seema ji I will not tolerate any fingers pointed at my upbringing. You may have different parenting ideals than me, but that doesn't mean that you're right and I'm wrong. I know all three of my daughters very well and I trust each of them more than myself. I please request you to end this matter here and let the rest of the wedding celebrations go on as planned."

"Shail didi made the biggest mistake by giving you responsibility over Rachna and Pihu. They should have been left under their own family's care. You've already spoiled your own daughter's life by giving her so much freedom that now she's sitting at home pregnant out of wedlock with no sign of the baby's father. But, do whatever you want Sneha and rest assured that there will be no further hindrances in the wedding from my side because I'm packing my bags and leaving on the next train."

"Seema ji please. It was Shail didi's and jija ji's last wish that Rachna have the blessings of her entire family when she gets married. Please don't go. Please stay for Rachna's happiness."

"Leave it Sneha. I can see how much Rachna values my presence given that she is willing to lie to me. I'm leaving right now; you can enjoy this wedding as you please after that."

Seema exited the room in a huff, leaving Sneha stressed and worried at the sudden turn of events. Seema entered the guest room and furiously began shoving her belongings into a suitcase. Sumit, who was already sitting in the room and reading a book became concerned over his mother's behavior.

"Ma, what are you doing? Why are you packing your bags?"

"Just shut up Sumit. Get up and pack all your things as well; tell Shipra to do the same. We're leaving on the next train."

"Ma what happened so suddenly that you just want to leave? Come on, tell me."

Seema glared at Sumit through her tear-filled eyes. "Stop asking questions Sumit and just do as I say! I've never been more disrespected in my life! I will not stay another moment in this house."

Sumit grabbed Seema's shoulders and forced her to sit on the bed as he gave her a glass of water. After she had taken a few sips, Seema appeared to calm down slightly.

"Come on ma, tell me what's wrong."

"Sumit, do you know where Rachna was all night? She was with Kabir at his house. Think! The bride and groom are spending the night together less than a month before the wedding! Chee! So shameless!"

"But ma why was Rachu at Kabir jiju's house? I mean, she must have had a good reason right?"

"Good, that's all I needed. Now my own son is going to try and explain things to me. I told you this Mumbai was a terrible place! We're leaving right now Sumit! Pack your things and tell Shipra!"

"Ma relax. I'm not taking anyone's side or even trying to reason with you. I just wanted to know why Rachu was there this time. I mean I may be wrong, but I think she has stayed with him before too. I saw a message on her phone from Kabir jiju that she had forgotten her toothbrush at home so he was coming to return it to her."

Seema's eyes became wide open with shock. "What! She's been living with him before marriage! Hey bhagwan! What has this world come to? Sumit, I've heard enough. I don't want to know any more; let's go beta."

Seema continued to frantically pack her belongings when someone knocked. Sumit opened the door and allowed Rachna to come in.

"Sumit, I'd like to speak to Seema chaachi privately if you don't mind."

Sumit took the hint and exited the room, closing the door behind him. Rachna timidly walked towards Seema, who sat on the bed with her arms crossed defensively.

"I don't want to talk to you Rachna, so you can save your breath."

Rachna sat on the bed next to Seema and looked down at the floor as she twisted her fingers nervously.

"Seema chaachi, you don't have to talk to me but please listen to what I have to say just once."

Hearing no reply, Rachna took a deep breath and continued. "I'm sorry chaachi ji that you had to find out about everything this way. Please believe me when I say this that I had absolutely no intention of hurting anyone with my actions. I just panicked last night when I saw that Kabir had such a high fever and I couldn't help but ask Sneha mausi for permission to stay with him. I just wasn't able to leave him alone in that state. I apologize if you felt that I shouldn't have done that. But now that you know about this, I just want to tell you the entire truth Seema chaachi. I just ask that you hear me out completely before you say anything. Okay?"

Seema glanced at Rachna with a questioning look, but remained silent, so Rachna continued speaking.

"I met Kabir three years ago in Benaras. He was my boss and we worked together for a few months. In that period we both started developing feelings for each other and so we began dating for a short while. He eventually proposed to me and we got married two years ago."

Seema's eyes became wide with shock upon hearing that statement, but she remained silent.

"Mummy and Papa had disowned me already and I had left Mumbai to create my own little world in Benaras. It was a world that I was afraid would shatter if I revealed it to anyone on the outside, so Kabir and I kept our marriage a secret from everybody. There were some things and misunderstandings that happened around the time of mummy and papa's accident that caused Kabir and I to separate for some time. But in the days that I spent apart from Kabir, I've realized more than ever before that I love him and I can't live without him. We have just become reunited after so many months and we felt that it would only be right to start our relationship anew with the blessings of our family. That's the entire truth chaachi ji and the only reason I hid it from you is because I wanted you here for my wedding. I thought you wouldn't stay if you knew the truth so we just let you believe that it was an arranged marriage between Kabir and I. It was absolutely wrong on my part to hide all this from you and I sincerely apologize for that. But truly, I want you to be here for my wedding; I need you here. Please forgive me chaachi ji and please stay."

Rachna let the tears flow down her cheeks as she patiently waited for Seema's response. The room was filled with a pin-drop silence, which, to Rachna's dismay, was broken by the sound of Seema zipping up her suitcase.

"Chaachi ji, please forgive your little Rachu. If not for me, please stay for mummy and papa."

Seema stopped zipping her suitcase and turned to face Rachna. "Don't waste your breath Rachna. I'm not changing my decision. I shouldn't have even agreed to come here in the first place. You had already brought so much shame to our family by running away from our family's tradition of practicing medicine to become a lowly fashion designer. And now I'm finding out that you secretly got married. Next thing you're going to tell me is that you also have a child that you're hiding. Just save it Rachna and enjoy your wedding without me."

Seema picked up her bag and rolled it out of the room without even a backwards glance. Rachna stood rooted to her spot, tears furiously flowing down her cheeks, clouding her vision. Her knees buckled and she fell to the ground with a thud, her sobs becoming louder and more violent. She remained in the room, in the same position for several minutes. She could hear Seema's voice through her sobs screaming at Sangeeta and the rest of her cousins to pack their bags immediately. Sneha soon entered the room cautiously and saw Rachna sitting on the floor with her tear-stained face and blood-shot eyes. She immediately rushed to her neice's side and enveloped her into a warm, maternal embrace. Rachna's sobs became louder and her shaking more violent as Sneha tried to comfort her.

"Shhh Rachna, please don't cry like this. I'll talk to Seema and Sangeeta ji both. Let them go for now, but I'll convince them to come back Rachna. In fact, Akash and I will both go to Indore and talk with Prabhu and Gopal ji as well. They'll be here for the wedding Rachna. I promise."

Rachna broke herself away from Sneha's arms and wiped her face. She immediately stood up and ran out of the room without saying another word, leaving Sneha deeply concerned. Rachna ran into her room and closed her door, making sure to lock it from the inside. She fell onto her bed lifelessly and continued to cry, overwhelmed with everything in her life that was tearing apart around her. In the background, she heard Seema and Sangeeta's loud voices arguing with Sneha's soft pleas. Suddenly the front door slammed shut and a loud silence rang through the entire house.

-----------------------

"Bhai, I've managed to trace down the address of that unknown number. We have to find out who sent those messages to you because obviously that person knows all about Gayatri's plans. It looks like it's some nursing home on the outskirts of Mumbai. I'll go and check it out."

Kabir looked up from his laptop, where he was busy responding to the pile up of work-related emails that he had been neglecting for the past few days. He closed the window and shut down the laptop before answering.

"I'll also come with you Karan. But before that I want to just speak to Rachna for a bit. She seemed kind of worried when she left here earlier and I want to make sure that she is okay. Can we just stop at her house quickly as we head out?"

"But bhai I can go by myself. I mean you just got over your fever and I don't want you to overexert yourself. And why don't you just speak to bhabhi on the phone?"

"No Karan, I can't let you go alone. And if it's too much of a hassle to go to her house then I'll just speak to Rachna over the phone while you drive. Come on, let's go. Oh and just make sure you tell Raju not to leave the apartment. I'll get my phone and then we can leave."

Karan headed out onto the highway while Kabir tried calling Rachna's phone multiple times, becoming concerned when he received no answer. He tried Sneha's number, which too continually went to voicemail. Finally, trying Gunjan's number, he got a response.

"Jiju, you have to come here right now. Rachna di has locked herself into her room and she's not coming out. You have to come talk to her."

"What? But why? I mean, is everything okay there?"

"Jiju I can't tell you all that over the phone. Please just hurry and come here."

Kabir hung up the phone and immediately had a flurry of concerning thoughts run through his mind.

"Karan, you have to head to Rachna's house right now. Hurry up!"
