Episode 11: The Twist
It was at the break of dawn. In the room of the motel, Kabir laid asleep on the bed, while Damini was sleeping, bundled in a blanket on a chair. The ray of sunlight that flashed in her face from the window opened her eyes. She looked up at Kabir, staring at his peaceful face as he slept. Then, her cell phone rang from the dresser. She got up and took the phone, answering "Hello?"
"Have you reached there yet?"
"Raja bhai?"
"Who else?! Your father?! Did you two reach to Pune or not?!"
"Raja bhai...Kabir was shot."
"What?! How?! When?!"
"Yesterday when we were on the road, we were attacked by a man. He aimed to shoot at me, but Kabir took the bullet instead."
"Who was that man?!"
"I don't know. He was masked."
"So much has happened and you didn't inform me?!"
"I must have forgotten. I had to get him treated before the wound got worse."
"Fine then! Forget Pune! Come back to the den."
"You're cancelling the job?"
"When the best man can't shoot, then what's the point in hunting?! Make sure you come back! I want to hear the details from him! Understand?!"
"Yes."
And with that, the call was disconnected. Damini dropped her phone on the dresser and turned to see Kabir had awoken. Seeing him try to get up, Damini rushed to him and helped him sit up. "I'm fine." Kabir said.
"Okay," Damini said. "Raja bhai called. I told him what happened. His orders are for us to come back."
"And what about the job?"
"He cancelled it."
"But I have to do the job! He wanted it done!"
"Well now he just wants you back. I'm just doing as he says. Get ready. I'll drive us back."
Damini got up and headed to the washroom while Kabir looked on.
On the other hand, at Bandra Police Department, many officers had arrived by jeep to the police station. They headed inside to the board room where ACP Kamal and Inspector Raina were waiting.
"What is this, Raina?!" Officer Bharath asked. "You sent us all the way to Pune for nothing?!"
"Oh shut up, Bharath! I didn't send you there to roam around like monkeys!" Inspector Raina retorted. "I called you all back because I have some special footage to show."
"What is it?" Officer Aayat asked.
"Everyone sit down." Inspector Raina ordered. All the officers immediately sat down in their respective seats. Inspector Raina then stepped forward in front of the officers, standing next to another officer who had a laptop with him. "Officer Rajat...please present the footage sent to us." Inspector Raina commanded.
And with the press of a button, a video from Officer Rajat's laptop was being displayed on the projector screen. "In order to monitor the activity of the Killers Society, I had special cameras set across Mumbai and Pune. And then one of our cameramen sent this footage to us," Inspector Raina explained as the video played. "As seen in this footage, our target killer was shot by an unknown man. After this incident, all our officers in Pune reported not seeing him in the city. So hence, his injury has resulted in a cancellation in his next job."
"So how does this help us now?" Officer Aayat asked.
"Officer Rajat, please zoom in on the shooter's face." Inspector Raina told Officer Rajat.
"Yes, Raina." Officer Rajat nodded as he zoomed in on the face of the shooter in the video from his laptop.
"If we look closely at the shooter and look downward, we can see the letters K.S. on the back of his jacket. The same letters that are on the jackets of all members of the Killers Society," Inspector Raina pinpointed. "So now, this brings a new twist to the tale. Our target killer was shot by his own comrade."
"Oh my God!" Officer Aayat exclaimed.
"So these killers don't just kill random people, but their own people as well?" Officer Bharath asked.
"That seems to be the case. So now our target is shifting. We need to find this shooter and take him in." Inspector Raina said.
"What logic is that?! Why should we care about the guy who shot our target?!" Officer Bharath asked.
"Bharath, this whole game is just like chess," Inspector Raina said. "In order to get checkmate, you take out the small moves first. And we will get to our main target...one bullet at a time."
