Perfect 10 for super sleuth

A versatile actor, Shivaji Satam has appealed to all generations for over a decade now as a super investigator ACP Pradyuman. Head of a special investigation team in CID on Sony, the show has a record that no K soap can match. He shares his experience with Gauri Kohli

How does it feel being part of CID for a decade?

It has been an amazing and enjoyable journey and feels great to be a part of the team. The credit for the show's popularity goes to BP Singh, the producer and director who has contributed to its success majorly. .

How did you bag the role of ACP Pradyuman?

BP Singh and I have been closely associated since 1976 when I started my career. He approached me for the role. I liked the offer and accepted it instantly. The role is very interesting and has undergone a lot of change ever since its inception. I have added my own style and other elements to make him click. He's an honest, strong and cunning investigator who loves his country. He's though to be stone-hearted but he's just a man of principles. For him, duty comes before relationships. The character is loosely based on Colonel Hardstone, a fictional spy and crime-fighter, created by Ibn-e-Safi as the lead character of the Urdu spy novel series Jasoosi Duniya. I get a chance to be my real self on screen through the show.

CID has been running for a very long time. What's your take?

It feels great. Yes, we are different and you see the results. The credit goes to my team. Children call me and recognise me as ACP, who is always there to help them. The success of a serial depends more on the stories that are crisp and taut. The best part about them is that they focus on each character equally. No role dominates the story. The narrative is simple, the content is rich and there are no gimmicks. It is a perfect mixture of fiction, reality and fantasy. The best part is that it appeals to all generations, be it children or adults.

Do you take any special training for the show?

Not much. The director knows what he wants from his actors. I don't have to do much homework.

Which were the cases that you enjoyed solving?

All cases are special. But to name a few, there was this case where I went blind and was so helpless, but with the help of my team's support, I could crack cases. Another one was on dowry deaths. We will be coming up with special episodes every month. The next one would feature Shahbaz Khan.

Besides television, what do you enjoy most?

I began my career with Marathi theatre and have worked in films like Nayak, Vaastav and Kisna. I dreamt of becoming a big star but then CID happened which has given me more satisfaction than anything else.
