Harry Potter in Vietnamese appears on Internet

VietNamNet Bridge – Just a few hours after Harry Potter's last volume, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was released worldwide, the Vietnamese translation of the book quickly appeared on the Internet.

On website http://www.hp7….com, a site for young Vietnamese fans of Harry Potter, the translation of the first chapter was posted just one hour after Volume 7's official release time. And so far, the first 10 chapters have been translated.

The website's members said they belonged to a non-profit group made up of young people from website www.hpvn.net, another Harry Potter fans' site. They translated the book in order to satisfy fans' thirst for it.

Young Publishing House, which plans to release the Vietnamese version some time in October, called this an irresponsible behavior, the purpose of which was merely to satisfy young people's curiosity, but which violates Youth Publishing House's copyright.

According to the publisher's representative, this may even lead to a more serious problem in the future: Vietnamese publishers may find it more difficult to buy copyrights for foreign works and introduce them to the Vietnamese public.

"Though this irresponsible behavior of the young people in fact doesn't cause considerable material damage to Youth Publishing House, but in the long run, it can kill the Vietnamese publishing business," said the representative. There is yet any action from responsible authorities on the matter.

Meanwhile, the English version of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has been selling well in Vietnam. On the afternoon of July 21 only, 5,000 copies were sold nationwide. Fahasa, the sole distributor in Vietnam, had earlier bought more than 10,000 copies from its British publisher, Bloomsbury Publishing House.

Malaysian Bookstores End Potter Boycott
By SEAN YOONG
Tuesday, July 24, 2007

Malaysia's biggest book chains ended a Harry Potter book sales boycott Tuesday that aimed to highlight how their business is threatened by grocery megastores that slash book prices.

The price dispute left at least 32,000 copies of the best-selling "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" languishing in storage following its release on Saturday.

Malaysian fans queue to get copies of J.K. Rowling's book "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" at a bookstore in Kuala Lumpur, on Saturday July 21, 2007. Thousands of Harry Potter fans poured into book stores around the world on Saturday as the seventh and final volume in the series went on sale, and for many the secret of the boy wizard's fate was only hours away. The three chains, which run more than 100 outlets nationwide, had refused to sell the new book to walk-in customers in protest at what they said were unfair discounts offered by supermarket retailers in Malaysia, including Britain's Tesco PLC and France's Carrefour SA.

The final volume of the wizard saga released worldwide Saturday was finally placed on the shelves of MPH Bookstores, Popular Book, and Times The Bookshop on Tuesday after the companies held talks with the book's Malaysian distributor, Penguin Books, said MPH spokesman Donald Kee.

"We agreed not to prolong this anymore,' Kee said. "Customers are the ones who suffer because they can't get the book."

Before the compromise, only people who reserved the book in advance had been able to buy it from those stores.

"We're not crybabies, but we believe that hypermarkets should not use these books as a loss-leader," Kee said. "If this continues, there might be no future for booksellers."

Tesco and Carrefour were selling "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" at a discount of $11.40 off its recommended retail price of $31.40.

Domestic Trade Minister Shafie Apdal had defended the supermarkets, saying discounts benefit the public.

However, Penguin Books' managing director for Malaysia and Singapore, Eddy Teo, said the discount rate caught the distributor "completely by surprise" because the supermarkets were offering the books at below cost price.

"We cannot control the prices, but we're encouraging retailers to be more sensitive toward booksellers," Teo said.

About one-third of MPH's 15,000 copies of the book were pre-ordered by customers, Kee said. Popular had some 28,000 copies, with pre-orders reportedly totaling about 6,000. Times has not publicly revealed its figures.

Kee said the chains are selling the book at its recommended price, but added that "as a goodwill gesture," customers who purchase other items at their stores would receive a 20 percent discount off the book.

More than 10 million copies of the book have been sold worldwide, bringing the total sales for the entire series to more than 335 million.

Daniel Radcliffe Turns 18, Celebrates With Cricket Tour

7/24/2007 at 8:59 AM
Tags: Lord's Cricket Tours

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has just survived a massive tour for his latest movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, as well as the reflective attention from the final book in the Potter series. So if he had chosen to spend his 18th birthday in a tub full of paper money, being fed Beluga caviar by Gisele Bundchen and Laeticia Casta, well, we could at least sympathize.
Instead, one of the world's newest millionaires (he gained access to $19 million of his "Potter" earnings officially today) spent the day watching cricket at Lord's, the Mecca of Cricket, where he watched the English national team take on India. He told the BBC he had never been to a match before but became obsessed with the sport while filming Down Under. Aw, now he's like our younger brothers.

If you can't get to a match, it is quite easy to add a "Home of Cricket" tour to your London itinerary. The tour lasts 1 hour and 40 minutes, starts at the MCC Museum and includes a viewing of the precious Ashes urn.

Rowling says will miss Harry Potter's world

Tue Jul 24, 2007 3:11PM BST

By Michelle Nichols

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Author J.K. Rowling said on Tuesday that she will miss being able to retreat into the fictional world of Harry Potter after finishing the seventh and final volume on the teen-age wizard.

But in an interview with NBC television's "Today" show, Rowling, 41, said it felt "incredible" to have completed the series she began 17 years ago when the idea came to her as she travelled on a train from Manchester to London.

"At the moment it feels great to be honest with you," she said during the interview at Edinburgh Castle. "It's a really nice place to be."

"It's a big sense of achievement," she said. "I mean I am sad, but I think (I was) sadder immediately after finishing writing. I felt devastated. For about a week I was hard to live with after finishing this book."

The much-anticipated "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" became the fastest-selling book in history when it was released around the world on Saturday. More than 11 million copies were sold in the first 24 hours in the United States and Britain.

"I think the whole thing, it was this amazing cathartic moment, the end of 17 years' work, and that was just hard to deal with for about a week," Rowling said.

"It brought back allot of memories of what had been going on in my life when I started writing," said the mother of three who had financial difficulties when she got the idea of Harry Potter but now is estimated to be worth $1.12 billion (543,000 pounds), making her the first dollar-billionaire author.

"When I started I wasn't in a bad place, then life had it's ups and downs, so Harry has been with me through a lot. I think it was that feeling more than any other, that I wouldn't have that world to retreat into again," she said. Continued...

INFLUENCE OF HER MOTHER'S DEATH

After Rowling came up with the idea, her mother died in December 1990 after suffering from multiple sclerosis for several years, which Rowling said "changed both my world and Harry's forever."

The following year, Rowling moved to Portugal as an English teacher and met and married journalist Jorge Arantes, with whom she had her first child Jessica. The couple later divorced.

Rowling left Portugal for Edinburgh, where her sister Di lived. There she finished her first novel, writing most evenings and in cafes when Jessica fell asleep in her stroller.

That book, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," went on sale in 1997, winning several awards and helping earn the author a U.S. publisher.

In addition to the books, the first five Hollywood movie adaptations of her Harry Potter stories have amassed around $4 billion at the global box office. The final film in the franchise is slated for release in 2010.

In December 2001, Rowling married Neil Murray, an anaesthetist. The couple have two children.

LONDON — Harry Potter has cast a spell on readers throughout the world, who purchased 72.1 million copies of the boy wizard's final adventure, an industry data service said Monday. Nielsen BookScan said the figures for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" were provisional; full and final figures were due to be released Tuesday. The company said 2.6 million copies of "Deathly Hallows" were sold in Britain in the 24 hours after it went on sale in England at 7:01 p.m. EDT Friday. The figure breaks the previous record of just over 2 million copies held by the previous Potter volume, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." It includes sales from book stores, supermarkets, other retailers and Internet sites, but excludes sales to libraries, schools and institutions. "Deathly Hallows," the seventh and final volume of J.K. Rowling's all-conquering fantasy series, sold 8.3 million copies in its first 24 hours on sale in the United States, according to publisher Scholastic Inc. The book was released around the world Saturday in a carefully orchestrated operation that saw midnight book store openings and long lines of Potter-maniacs. Its initial print run was 12 million in the United States alone. On Monday, for a third straight day, seven of the top 10 books on Amazon.com's best seller list were Potters, including paperback and hardcover editions of "Half-Blood Prince" and a boxed set of the entire series coming out in September. On Amazon's children's list, 22 of the top 25 books were Potter books, including the top eight rankings. Collectors already were looking to cash in. A set of all seven Potters, six of them first editions and two signed by illustrator Mary GrandPre, was being offered on abebooks.com for $2,181. The audiobook for "Deathly Hallows," signed by narrator Jim Dale, had an asking price of $319.80.

The numbers could really soar if anyone tries to sell one of the 1,600 hardcover copies that Rowling signed over the weekend. Last spring, a Rowling-signed first edition of the first Potter book, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (renamed "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" in the United States) was auctioned in London for $56,319.
