A lot of you'll don't know it's literal meaning and don't realize how eloquent it really is!Yesterday, a couple of my colleagues asked me to translate this poem for them. They were mesmerized when I told what it actually meant! So I'm going to do the same for you guys. Since I'm translating it exactly into english, the grammar will be a little haywire. (Please forgive me) Hope you'll will appreciate it! Pura dukh aur aadha chand
Hijr ki shab aur aisa chand
My sorrow is full and the moon is only half
It's the night of separation and here's such a moon.
Din mein wehshat bahal gayi thi
Raat hui aur nikla chand
The horror of the day had just passed
Night occurred and emerged the moon
Kis maqtal se guzra hoga
Itna sahmaa sahmaa chand
(Note: Maqtal means execution ground)
Which execution ground might he have passed by?
This scared, scared moon
Yaadon ki abaad gali mein
Ghoom raha hai tanha chand
In the alley of everlasting memories
That lonely moon is roaming around
Meri karwat per jaag uthey
Neend ka kitna kachcha chand
On my side, he arose
How insomniac is the moon
Munh ko kis hairat se
Dekh raha hai bhola chand
With what wonder at my face,
is that cute moon looking at?
Itnay ghanay baadal ke peechhe
Kitna tanha hoga chand
Behind those dense clouds
How lonely must be the moon
Aansu roke noor nahaaye
Dil dariya, tann sehra chaand
Controlling his tears he bathed in light
The rivers in our hearts, that clueless moon
Itne roshan chehre per bhi
Suraj ka hai saya chaand
Even it's bright face,
IS only the shadow of the sun
Jab paani mein chehra dekha
Tunay kisko socha chaand?
When you saw your face in the water,
who did you think of, Moon?
Bargad ki ek shaakh hata ker
Jaanay kisko jhaanka chaand
(Note: Bargad is the banyan tree)
Moving aside one branch of the Banyan tree
Who knows whom was the moon peeking at
Baadal ke resham jhoolay mein
Bhor samay tak soya chand
In the silky swing of the clouds
Till early morning did the moon sleep
Raat ke shaanon per sar rakkhe
Dekh raha hai sapna chand
Resting his head on the shoulders of the night
The moon is having a dream
Sookhay patton ke jhurmat per
Shabnam thi ya nanha chand
On the assembly of dried leaves
Was it the dewy or small moon?
Haath hila ker rukhsat hoga
Uski surat hijr ka chand
Waving his hands he'll bid farewell
to the separated visage of the moon
Sehra sehra bhatak raha hai
Apne ishq mein sacha chand
Aimlessly he's roaming around
The moon true to his love
Raat ke shayad ek bajey hain
Sotaa hoga mera chaand!
It might be one in the night
My moon must be asleep!
