What is Child Labour?
Child labour is a work which harnesses a child & makes it impossible for him/ her to achieve his/ her desired goals. It is hard to believe that over 250 million children between the age group of 5 & 14 are estimated to be victims of this social ailment worldwide, despite being moppets of the 21st century. They are sanctioned to work even in critical conditions in order to attain a livelihood.

Children are undoubtedly the pride of any nation but at present they are treated so ruthlessly by adults viz many communities are tending to forget the value these little buds hold. At this very tender age, they are forced to work in tea stalls to what we call coal mining industries for a few or no wages. People who are appointing them are shamelessly making them perform the jobs which are not even necessary for them to accomplish. They are bound to fulfill the various needs which are definitely their families' requirement. But that isn't their job towards a healthy nation, is it?

Children are not even spared from the many fates which take place alternatively in those hazardously enormous laboratories & factories. And the people owning them don't seem to face any problem in this regard, that's why they dare to appoint little ones. But to what extent they are right with this step?

"Education is a right of every child."

We might have heard or read this statement a number of times. But how much does it apply to the current scenario which is just rather invincible?

Why does it exists?

Ever had a deep thought as to what prompts those innocent lives to give away the childhood joys and accept the cruel reality of this world?

What triggers people to accept this cruel joke of life so easily?

***
The most basic reason for the existence of child labour is because people have
a c c e p t e d
it and there are all sorts of e x c u s e s made for it. People
a l l o w
something as fragile and sensitive as child labour to be just another problem in the third world countries. It's not j u s t a n o t h e r problem. It's a much wider and bigger issue than its being discussed.

Discrimination of w e a l t h plays a huge part in the existence of child labour. In some countries, children are being discriminated for b e i n g p o o r and are forced to take up the jobs that may just about provide for their day to day s u s t e n a n c e. People have made schools and education inaccessible and unaffordable for poor children.

This is why is exists.

International legislation and laws have been in placed to s t o p this cruelty but it's not being taken s e r i o u s l y or being enforced with a u t h o r i t y to end it.

It exists because people are not b o t h e r e d about who m a k e s the clothes or jewellery they wear, as long as it's c h e a p.

And the list is endless..

But most of all, it exists because
we haven't done enough to end it...

What do the Statistics say?

It's disturbing to imagine that in this age of technology, where we know everything that's taking place in the nook and corner of the world, child labour still continues to exist. According to sources about 250 million children worldwide are engaged in Child Labour. Nearly one in four children (aged between 5 to 14) are engaged in labour that is considered harmful to their well-being and growth.

The pervasiveness of child labour is most astounding in Asia and Africa. But Asia takes the lead with 61%(153 million) followed by 32% (80 million) in Africa and 7% (17 million)in Latin America. The situation in developed countries is no better. Approximately 2.5 million children are engaged in Child Labour.

Studies have also discovered that the proportion of boys working is more to that of girls. They labour in mines and quarries and are exposed to harmful chemicals, enslaved in bonded labour and exploited for economic gains. A large number of children suffer from injuries or illness because of their work. On an average they work for 9 hours everyday. That is the time they should be spending in school.

Despite the cruel joke of life, there have been cases where innocent children have been helped and saved from the horrible circumstances that no one deserve to go through.

Let us present you with a few examples of bravery and courage -

Two brothers named Almayo and Wandamu, at the age of 10 ran away from home, thinking it as an exciting adventure. They ran to Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, where they thought to work in a weaving industry and earn money to surprise the family. Little did they know they had to work hard for 16 hours for the next years to come without much break and any money. They were beaten for any small mistakes they made. They were left to sleep on the cold floors.

When they got to know about their father being ill, they got the courage to escape from the hell after 7 years. Now after 5 years of returning to their Village, at age 22, Almayo is going to start school at Grade 2 and he said he is happy and excited about the same. World Vision is going to contribute Almayois education fees. Almayo is going to work in a part time job to earn money for his family.

82 Children were rescued by the Delhi Childline from 3 embroidery and zari factories. These children were brought from Stamarhi, Bihar. On the pretext of making the children learn the work of embroidery, the owner of the factories brought those kids. However, instead of teaching them work, they were employed as the labourers. They were given very less salary of only Rs.300 without much of food. They were asked to work for long hours.

The children have been taken to the CWC and were refereed to be taken to the government shelter home. The perpetrator have been caught and a case has been charged against him by the police.

Lina, a girl who comes off from a poor family in Cambodia, at the age of nine was sent to Thailand by her parents with some known people to them. They thought she can find work over there and support the family with the earned money. In Bangkok, Lina was made to stand for long hours in from of nightclubs to sell flowers, candy etc. The trafficker of Lina used to beat and abuse her when the income was low. They also took the earrings Lina wore while she came from Cambodia.

Two years after Lina was bought to Bangkok, the trafficker convinced Lina's parents to give their other daughter who was 8 years old then. Lina was not willing to let her sister suffer the same way she did all those years in Bangkok. So she asked help from a night club worker to escape from there and the person co-operated with them. After escaping, Lina and her sister spend several months in Thai children's centre, and then came back to Cambodia. The Damnok Toek Poipet Reception Centre for trafficked and abused children gave them a place which was safe to live. The girls are now safe and happy. Now they have some goals in life which they are determined to reach.

What are the measures/prevention in place?

IPEC or International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour tried to create awareness among the public against child labour since the time it came into being in 1992. They started country based programs which promotes policy reform. They built institutional capacity and put in place concrete measures to end child labour.

Companies took up child labour as the corporate social responsibility and worked on awareness programs to end the child labour. Educational programs are given to the people because it is an effective effort to eliminate the child labour. The Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation has seeked help from the security agencies to stop the child labour taking place.

In India, the government has banned any form of child labour. Children under 14 should not be send for work or be recruited for any kind of labour. Severe punishment has been set up for these kind of offenses.

In 1998, due to the over whelming response against child labour, the Global march against child labour came out. The main goal of this movement were:

"Protect and promote the rights of all children, especially the rights to receive free, meaningful education"
"To be free from economic exploitation and from performing any work that is likely to be damaging to a child's physical, mental, spiritual, moral or social development".

The march was very successful and it achieved its purpose by allowing changes to occur with the policies of child labour with the International Labour Organization.

A youth-orientated version of Convention No. 182 has been developed against child labour to make the people aware that child labour is creating hindrance against children's development, compromising entire generations and undermining the human capital of the world.

Please do take some time out of your busy life and do something to make a difference. It's every little things we do that counts. Do your bit and pray for betterment of these children and those who are still going through the violent abuse of child labour.

Until next time,
regards...
