Widow - No more an outcast in Indian TV
It is an accepted fact that television haven't been able to adopt the modern outlook of the present time urban society, neither is it too primitively replicating traditional outlook. We can say, these days TV shows have a base on semi-modernization. In midst of it, if we talk about women empowerment there are still too little developments, though ironically, television contents are poignantly women centric. Female leads are still executed as subdued, regressive and of weaker kind. However, like saying "there's exception to everything", one thing that have appreciatively got a sophisticated outlook in feminism in television is portrayal of several widow characters that nowadays happens without much melodrama- the subtlety of which definitely passes on a feeling of empowerment and inspiration. So here to you, is Just Showbiz's effort of bringing some of the special TV widows, who have gotten new birth, and their execution of modern outlook is just commendable.
Ashwini Kalsekar as Maham Anga (Jodha Akbar)
Zee TV's hit show Jodha Akbar zeroes in the sixteenth century period drama of Mughal Emperor Akbar to small screen. And it is absolutely intriguing to witness a woman possessing political powers and having tremendous influence over the then Empire. Obviously, the tale is of the great Emperor, but alongside it carries the tale of an independent, shrewd, intelligent and influential widow- Maham Anga, the wet nurse-cum-foster mother of Emperor Jalalludin Mohd was often seen in the show, taking prominent political decisions and executing the Empire as de facto regent. Though a negative-shaded character, influence made by the powers she possessed despite being a widow is a milestone for showcasing women strength in small screen.
