They sat in silence. Arjun wasn't sure for how long, but they just sat there.
Each lost in their own world. His anger dissipated in time. All he felt now was an
uncomfortable heat around him. Like he was sitting in an oven.
As he sat there, Arjun tried preparing himself to relate what he considered was
one of the worst and happiest chapters of his life. But, he couldn't do it. He didn't
even know where to start. He would have happily sat in the silence if not for the
searching eyes of his wife. Her understanding and patience so far have
done nothing but add burden to his already heavy heart.
He sighed for the nth time that evening and looked up at Sakshi. They were
sitting in the living room, she sat on the single couch across from his. The tears
dried on her cheeks but anyone would have known she'd been crying her eyes out
not too long ago. Feeling his gaze, she looked up at him.
"I need to know what's going on Arjun" She said calmly as if encouraging him
to speak.
"Sakshi mein...I..." He didn't know what his next set of words would do to
her. How heart breaking would it be to know that the man you are married to, in
fact, does not want to be married to you?
"Arjun, please..."
He hesitated, weighing his answer.
"I-I wasn't ready. I wasn't ready for this marriage Sakshi" He did not dare look
up at her as he continued,
"I...got married..." His breathing became heavy, "...for my aunt's sake"
"For...your...aunt's sake??" Her voice was low, almost a whisper as she asked
in confusion.
"Mein...mein kissi aur se...pyaar karta...hoon" Words he decided he would
never speak to her, flew out of his mouth. Silence stretched between them to the
point that it was painful.
When he looked up, her face held pure shock. All the colour drained from her
face as she looked at him with eyes as big as saucers. The shock slowly
transformed into confusion and then hurt. Tears once again brimmed in her eyes
before slowly making their way down her cheeks. He could not watch as her face
contorted more and more in pain as his words sunk in.
Every time a tear rolled down her cheeks, he felt a stabbing pain in his chest.
At that moment, Arjun truly realised the injustice he had done to Sakshi. As if to
rub salt on his wound, his wife spoke in the most broken voice he'd ever heard.
"Kissi...a-aur se...p-pyaar karte ho?"
"I am sorry, Sakshi" He whispered.
"M-Mujhse shaadi k-kyun ki?"
When he didn't reply and just looked away, she spoke again.
"Uss l-ladki ka k-kya hua?" She spoke through her tears. After a long moment
of silence, when he did not reply, she practically yelled.
"ARJUN?!?!"
"I-I don't know"
"Matlab? Arjun you are not making any sense!! Agar kissi aur se pyaar karte
ho toh mujhse shaadi kyun ki??" She screamed.
"Sakshi please...please calm down...I..."
"Calm down? Are you serious?? Arjun, agar tum keh the ki tumhe iss shaadi
main adjust karne main thoda time lagega toh mein samajh sakthi hoon.
Arranged marriage hua hain humara, hum dono ko time lagega ek doosre ko
jaanne main, adjust karne main...but do you realise what you are saying??
Tum kissi aur se pyaar karte ho Arjun!! How the hell do I deal with that???"
Silence seeped into his every pore, paralyzing him from speech or movement.
All he could do was watch as Sakshi pulled her knees to her
chest and wrapped her arms around them, slowly rocking back and forth on
the couch.
She was exhausted from all the screaming and crying, he could see she was
exhausted. Tears rolled in his own eyes, slowly making their way down. Finally,
making the effort, he got up and walked to her. Kneeling down in front of her
couch, he slowly, hesitantly put his hand on her shaking ones.
Her soft skin felt cold under his hand.
"Sakshi..." He whispered gently. Her eyes were fixed on his hand on top of
hers as she spoke.
"Now what?" Her voice was coarse with all the screaming.
"What happens now Arjun? You want a divorce, so you can go back to...to..."
She started crying again.
"No!! No, I would never do that to yo..."
"Then what? Stay married and live under one roof like strangers for the rest of
our lives?? Go back to you treating me like I am invincible? What Arjun??"
"Look, I am sorry! The way I have been treating you the last three weeks was..."
"I don't care about the last three weeks Arjun! Tell me about the future. Our
future, together"
They held each other's gaze for the longest moment yet. All Arjun saw in her
eyes was uncertainty and fear for the future. Their future. Voices rang in his ears,
pushing him to do what he knew was right. All he could think at that point - as he
made up his mind - was how grateful he was for all the people in his life, who
show him the right way whenever he gets stuck.
...your relationship with Priya was doomed the minute it started and you knew
it...
...you had a choice and you chose...
...Bewakoofi hain yeh Arjun! Beta, woh tumhari zindagi se jaa chuki hain...
...not if you are marrying this girl for the wrong reasons!...
...stick with what you chose and take up the responsibilities that come with it!...
Sighing, he squeezed Sakshi's hands gently.
"I realise what I did was wrong and I won't repeat the same mistake again! I am
sorry, Sakshi. Galati meri thi aur uski sazza tumhe nahi milegi. Just give me one
chance...to make things right..."
"But, you love someone else..."
"She's...she's not in my life anymore. She hasn't been for quite a while, I was...I
was being stupid, hanging on to something that's...in the past. I am not saying
I'd be able to set things right over night, I need time. But, I will make things right"
He waited anxiously before the silence was broken.
"I can't..." She whispered.
All hope drained from Arjun's heart.
