Chapter 37

Paro sighed, "It was a quiet day at the stall Mrs. Sisodia was talking about how handsome and accomplished her nephew is and how his colleagues call him Miracle hands because of his extraordinary surgical skill. My thoughts drifted to Rudra and his skilful hands which can be both deadly and delicate depending on the situation. I think I told her that I wished he would come and take me away with him. She hugged me and said that i was finally ready for a handsome prince to come sweep me off my feet. She didn't know I was already swept off my feet by my Jallad. She assumed I was talking about her nephew when I was referring to Rudra. She was so excited, she thought I was impressed with all the things she told me about him but for me the only man that holds my attention in Rudra. I do crazy things like run to the closest window when I hear the sound of a bike. When I see a pair of glasses I look around to see if he is around and left it there. When I see a man wearing a leather jacket I run to see if its him. I know its stupid but he is all I can think about. Every person or object around me leads my thoughts back to him. And before I explain myself, she raced out telling me that I would be a good match for him and that she will arrange for his family to visit. I never considered remarrying after the fake wedding by Thakursa. I'm still not sure if I can go through all the rituals again even if its Rudra by my side. Maasi, when we faked our engagement each ritual felt like a mockery of everything I had been raised to believe in. I felt like I was cheating Varun's memory by going through all that again with another man, a man I had thought to be his killer. I remember my first wedding so clearly. I had sat through a Sangeet ceremony when all of Birpur rejoiced for my upcoming nuptials. My face glowed after the haldi and my hands adorned with henna. And when I promised to belong to Varun for the next seven lifetimes, I never imagined he probably would have abandoned me after seven hours. I believed his sweet words about a small but happy family. I revelled in the fact that I belonged to someone finally and they belonged to me. But that was all a lie and what happened with Rudra was a farce. Now the idea of another wedding to another stranger is plain terrifying. I ran after her to explain but ended up crashing into Laila. She told me that she loves Rudra and that they had a past together. She wanted me to leave him alone so that they could rekindle their relationship." Tears started to trickle down her cheeks, she continued, "I never bothered to understand why he hated me for putting him through a fake engagement. But Laila's words put things in a new light. She sounded so sincere in her love for him. She had come on our haldi ceremony and attacked me. I didn't understand that she was fighting for her love. And he had to pick me over her, because he needed to keep me safe, I was his sole witness wasn't I. But he had to push her away for my sake. Why won't she hate me, I took him away from her, his love? He never told me anything not that day or later when we became good friends. We discussed a lot of things but never that day. I didn't want to prod as he is a very private person. And then as we became closer, I didn't want to know if there was anyone else in his life before I came along. I was happy in the direction things were going. Although marriage was still scary, a lifetime with Rudra was something to look forward to. I can sit through a few rituals if it means having Rudra forever."

"Laila baisa's words changed things, it showed me that there was someone else whom Rudra might belong to. Her attack on our Haldi, her words about a Jaanwar named Rudra implied that I was coveting a man who belonged to another woman. I wanted to run to him and confirm for myself, but what if he says its true? I love him Maasiji. It would break my heart if he says that there was a time that he loved her. That would make me the other woman wouldn't it, a home wrecker of sorts. I could never stoop so low. While I want his happiness more than anything, I can't see it with someone else. Maybe this proposal which will take me away from here will serve the purpose, so when Mrs. Sisodia came back and informed they will be coming to meet me this week, I didn't say anything. I knew you and Maasaji won't mind as you have been acquainted with the family for years. And Rudra will be allowed to come back to his home and go back to Laila. Everyone gets what they want. I never understood the depths of his feelings for me. I never imagined that all the dreams I had for our future together was what he was planning for us." Geethanjali looked deeply into the young woman's eyes. She could read the anxiety and confusion in her eyes. "What will you do now? Now that you know that he feels as strongly about you as you do about him, are you going to go meet this boy?" she asked. "I don't want to meet anyone. I should clarify this to Mrs. Sisodia as soon as possible," Paro said firmly. Her aunt kissed her forehead, "Good girl. Padmini won't want you to proceed, if your heart desires someone else. But talk to her soon, the longer you wait, the harder it will get. And good luck, its almost impossible to talk to her when she is excited about something." Paro replied that she will talk to her the first thing in the morning.

"I'm sorry for disturbing you so late in the night, bhaisa, but I didn't know who else to call" said a soft voice. "My husband is being hunted by the BSD, I'm not sure how long we can keep running. I know what he did might have been wrong. But when the government took away his power, he felt threatened and tried to maintain his lifestyle and his prestige as best as he could. I know his means were wrong but he meant no harm. Bhaisa, I have heard that the new officer handling the arms dealing case is a very honest and scrupulous man. But I am willing to do anything to save my husband, my Thakursa," she pleaded. He was stunned, his reply came out as a fractured whisper, "Bhabhisa..., you're married to Param Singh Tejawat!" He didn't hear her confirm as his wife pulled the phone from his hand and cut the line. "Mohini, what do you think you are doing?" he asked frustrated. She replied that she should be asking that question seeing as he was on the phone with his bhabhisa who had abandoned his own brother and nephew without a second thought. "She is your sister too. And she sounded desperate and probably needs help" he argued. She agreed if her sister was foolish enough to marry the traitorous Tejawat, she will need help. But it wasn't their place to bother about her, rather they should brace themselves for the storm she will bring if she returns to them. "How can you say that about your own sister? Doesn't she mean anything to you?" Danveer asked, shocked at the animosity she felt for her own blood. "She was never my sister, she was Mala, the one who took everything that I wanted. But to you, she was your brother's wife, wasn't she? The same brother whom she left behind, doesn't he mean anything to you? He has always supported you in everyway possible, even against me your own wife. How can you even think of helping the woman how left him?" she argued. Because no matter what her mistakes were, she loved Rudra and for that boy they must be open to her return. "No, its exactly for his sake, that she must be kept away. The only person Mala loved was herself, she is my sister, I know this well. Try to understand if she returns all his wounds will be torn open. He has been through enough pain because of her. Bhaisa gave our Sumer wings to fly and follow his dream, least we can do is give Rudra a place to call home" she told him firmly. She went to bed wondering if he was in touch with her sister all these years. Would he really hide this from his brother? What would Dilsher's reaction be? Would he forgive such a betrayal or throw them out on the streets? She had worked too hard for the right to rule this Haveli. She will not give this up simply because her husband sympathised with his bhabhisa, "She is not a part of our lives anymore, let's keep it that way. That is in everyone best interest, especially yours. I have fought you for years for picking your brother over me. But if I matter to you even a little, don't pick her over me." Danveer watched his wife switch of the lights and went towards the bed. Even if she could keep her sister away from their home, how will she stay out of Rudra's life. The minute Tejawat is arrested, Mala too will be brought in for interrogation. Rudra will be forced to see her, whether he is ready for it or not. Mohini mumbled in her sleep, "I don't know about you but I like this Rudra who is too wrapped up in Parvati than the one who turned into a Jaanwar fighting with everyone since Mala left him." Danveer couldn't help agree with her on this point. Things were settling down for his brother and nephew, maybe it was best this way. He owed his wife this peace at least as long as it lasted. He had to wait a little longer before reminding Rudra that his mother truly loved him.

The next day, Paro sat in the car carefully rehearsed her speech. She had to apologise for misleading her and simply say that marriage should be for lifetime of love, trust and understanding and at this point she can't promise any of this to her nephew when her own heart is pining for someone else. It was a mistake on her part to hide her feelings and she had to stop this before things got out of hand. She got out and walked towards their stall near the Jaipur city palace. There were a lot of customers around, it seemed like a college group was visiting the city. The girls were brightly dressed in clothes she had seen only in movies. They rushed from one stall to another unmindful of the exorbitant prices they paid for such simple articles. She went closer to see if Sunheri was among them. She missed the dear girl's carefree and bubbly nature. Dancing around twirling her ghagra, she reminded her of her childhood with Bindi when she never had a care in the world. She wasn't sure which college these girls were from, she wondered if it would be rude to ask. "Excuse me, your hoops are very pretty" on of the girls commented. Paro smiled and told them that they were Kundan earrings, which were made locally. She then escorted them to their stall where Mrs. Sisodia was waiting with plenty of similar earrings for the girls to purchase. They squealed with excitement seeing the lovely bags and scarves and other ethnic items on display. Soon the store was full of girls purchasing one item or the other. The neighbouring shop vendors frowned and shook their head in disappointment. Everytime Paro visited the tourist centre, their sales dropped. She was walking, talking advertisement with which they couldn't compete. And all if them needed the money not being supported by any NGO or the government. But the jokes were on the tourists all the trinkets of the world won't make them half as pretty as her.

Paro waited patiently for the rush to subside before talking to Mrs. Sisodia. She was busy explaining about the upcoming fair in Sanganer where the local artisans will sell their best wares. Sometimes even craftsmen from across the border visit the town bringing their own handmade goods. The girls were excited and rushed out wondering if they could go to Sanganer for the fair. One of them wanted to know if the palaces there were still occupied. Mrs. Sisodia replied that some aristocratic families still lived in such havelis as they are called. But most of them have been converted into heritage hotels to cater to the large number of tourists who visit the state. Another girl commented how wonderful it would be of a prince from one such family fell in love with her, then she could live a fairytale life. Her friends teased her as Paro's mind drifted to the prince who was in love with her and his affectionate family. Mrs. Sisodia laughed at the naivety of the girls who still believed in fairytales and told them that even if she doesn't find a prince of her own, a girl can still get married in such a palace and be a princess for a day. Paro looked dejected for a minute scared that her fairy tale might just slip through her fingers but composed herself as she felt the older woman's eyes on her. Mrs. Sisodia was tired when the tourists finally left. Paro kindly asked if she was alright first before discussing her own issues. "Nothing to worry about dear, just a headache" she told Paro. The young woman looked for the constable to go buy painkillers from the medical shop nearby. He wasn't around, she left herself.

"Yes, Thakursa I'm certain about the news, there is a doctor coming from Mumbai to meet Paro the same time as the fair. Ranavat and the BSD will be preoccupied with that. Apparently they are trying to give their star witness a new lease of life. We can transport our consignment easily while they are distracted. The BSD are not aware of the tunnel yet, if the goods are packed carefully we can slip it through...Yes Thakursa, I have made arrangements for you and Thakurain to escape too. You will be free at last...There won't be any mistakes this time...Wait a minute, someone is coming...its her, Paro...You want me to...Yes, Thakursa as you command," he ended the call and approached Paro.

Paro didn't notice the man until he was too close. He grabbed her hand and she screamed. He managed to drag her to a deserted part of the tourist complex. This was why she avoided coming here. Too many places for people to hide and she always felt the need to keep looking over her shoulder. She bit his hand and he let go of her howling in pain. She was terrified, the packet of medicines dropped from her hand. She ran back to safety, back to the crowds. Why was he here, Thakursa's man? "Are you blind? Can't you see where you are going?" someone scolded as she bumped into them. She mumbled an apology and looked back, was he following her? Where was the constable when she needed him? She stumbled and fell, her rudraksh slipped away and rolled away from her. She wanted to retrieve it, her only protection when Rudra wasn't around, his rudraksh. But the man was getting closer, she had to let it go. Someone helped her get up, "Are you alright?" She simply nodded in answer and ran helter skelter, until she saw him.

oooh. so many new twists in the plot. Mohini comes to know about her husband's secret conversations with Mala. I like how she is trying to prevent Mala's return to save Rudra. And um hello Mala, she is still supporting her husband? Why?
And what a cliff hanger. Is Rudra going to come and save Paro or will she be abducted by Tejawat?

Mohini doesn't want Mala back, Rudra is not the main reason. Though she cares about her nephew, her life's work is also at sake here for her. That's why she sees Mala as a threat.
Mala loves Tejawat, she is sticking by him the same way most women do when they see their husband's dark side. They believe with love they can be brought to the right track.
Right now Paro is under Tejawat's scanner, PM me with your speculations.
