With her permission .

Humsafar' is a gem of a show It is an adaptation of a famous novel by the same name by Farhat Ishtiaq.

5 Reasons why Humsafar is a must-watch:

1) The Story/Script

Simple, thought provoking, and realistic, the story grips us from the beginning leaving us to ponder on these questions-

Have you ever found yourself torn between your wishes and those of your loved ones?

Do you have a best friend you absolutely adore and cannot do without but are not in love with?

Has a tragedy forced you to succumb to the pressures of life, and not given you a fair chance to live it the way you wanted?

Can you form an everlasting unbreakable bond with the very person you initially did not want in your life?

Lastly, how fragile is that bond you so painstakingly form with that one person you call your life?

How do you deal with these realities and which path do you carve for yourself with your decisions forms the crux of the story.

The story follows the journey of Khirad and Ashar as a couple, who are pressured into marriage due to the untimely death of Khirad's mother.

Khirad is a self-respecting beautiful young woman living with her Ammi in their humble home at Hyderabad (Pakistan). Her Mamoun, Baseerat, a rich businessman lives in Karachi with his wife, and his son, Ashar.

Ashar is a suave Yale returned well-educated well-mannered gentleman, who manages his father's business. He has a best friend in Sara, his mother's niece. Unknown to him, Sara loves Ashar, and wishes to eventually get married to him. With both their mothers approving their union, Sara in her wildest of dreams, could not have imagined the turn the tale would take one day.

Khirad's mother is soon detected with cancer and calls Baseerat for help. Baseerat brings his sister and niece to Karachi to provide her with the best treatment for cancer. When Khirad's mother realizes the fatality of the situation, she requests her brother to get Khirad married before she dies. Ridden with guilt at having neglected his sister's welfare until now, he promptly decides to get Khirad married to his son.

None of them are happy about this union and Sara takes it the hardest having loved Ashar immensely for so long. Ashar on the other hand is shocked at Sara's revelation, and is torn between his wish to not see his friend heart-broken and his father's plea for him to get married to Khirad to ease his dying sister's angst regarding her daughter's future.

You have to watch the show to see how the story progresses from here on.

2) The Characters:

The lead pair of Humsafar, Khirad and Ashar has author-backed roles. Khirad is someone you will fall in love with. She is shown as an individual who has a strong sense of who she is and what she wants. Ashar is a handsome dude who has his priorities right. Sara is one of the most pivotal characters, strong yet subtle in her manipulations making her an interesting watch.

All the characters in the drama are well etched, each having a role to play in moving the story forward without a hitch.

3) The Cast:

The ensemble cast of Humsafar boasts of some of the talented names in the Pakistani Television Industry.

Fawad Khan as Ashar

Fawad Khan of the blockbuster-hit film, Khuda kay liye, essays the role of Ashar so convincingly, that he IS Ashar. He is tailor-made for the role, and he speaks with his eyes, which is one of his biggest assets.

Mahira Khan as Khirad
Mahira Khan is stunning as Khirad. Her face spells character and leaves an indelible mark on the minds of the viewers and she captures the viewer's hearts too from her very first frame in Humsafar.

Naveen Waqar as Sara

Naveen Waqar owns the role of Sara to the hilt. She plays it with such honesty that even though she has shades of grey and one wishes to dislike her for her intentions and subtle manipulations, one cant but empathize with her state.

Atiqa Odho, one of the famous personalities in Pakistani television, plays Ashar's mother.

4) The Direction:

Words would not be enough to extol the way the show has been directed. Sarmad Khoosat has weaved magic without a magic wand. Every scene tells a story and one would not want to miss even a single frame of it. He and his team have proved that a story needs no frills to be told, it just has to be told with honesty, integrity, and dedication to the craft.

5) The Music:

Last but definitely not the least, the background scores that blend in with the scenes and the soul-stirring title track sung by Pakistani singer, Qurat-ul-Ain Balouch sets the tone for a great drama.

Adaavatein theen..

Taghaaful thaa...
Ranjishein thi Magar... Bicharne walay mein sab kuch tha
Bewafai na thi ...
Ke dhoop chaun ka aalam raha
Judai na thi ...

This weekly drama on Hum TV, gives you enough palpitations (of the good kind), and recuperating time of one week, before you get ready for another dose of this heart-wrenching saga. The pathos in the story lies in its very own title track that goes ...

Woh humsafar thaa magar
uss sey humnawai na thi...
Kay dhoob chaaon ka
aalam raha judai na thi...
woh humsafar tha ...

After the lines of the song have sunk in, you know it's no one's fault when it comes to the ways of the heart!

Hope you enjoy watching it as much as we have and we are thrilled to share this awesome show with you all.

Neeraja Unni

An Indian Director's Take on Humsafar:

Waseem Sabir, is a renowned Director on Indian Television who has directed shows like Saat Phere, Remix, Maryada and recently Dharampatni on Imagine TV. Waseem not only bonds with his actors but also connects with his characters which helps him to get the best on screen. He also has an eye for details. Rangmunch.TV sincerely thanks Mr. Waseem Sabir for agreeing to write about Humsafar, the show, from the point of view of a Director who has the knowledge and the expertise to do so.

"Firstly, I would like to thank Swati Ghosh for introducing me to Humsafar.

As Indians, we have known the Pakistani TV industry through shows like Dhoop kinarey, Ankahee, Tanhaiyan, Zeenat and many more. Yes its a limited knowledge, but am sure a lot of us who are hooked on to Indian television wont even know about Pakistani TV because we do not have the access like Pakistan has to our shows, sad but its a fact.

As a person from the Indian TV industry, we believe in one thing, CONTENT IS KING that means writing plays a very important role in making a TV show. Coming back to Humsafar, when I saw the first episode, I won't deny the beauty of the heroine got me hooked - the simplicity, nude makeup, and simple styling.

About the show, I would say its a very simple show, simple characters, very basic in short takings and as a maker, all I would say is, that's the most difficult thing to do - Make a simple Show and hats off to the makers of Humsafar. The characters are so real that you connect with them instantly. It has fantastic sound track. It is an old Ghazal by the renowned Sufi singer, Abida Parveen. The scenes are slow but the story just moves with every scene, so you do not get bored even in a long scene because the layering of the characters gets you involved in every moment. There are many scenes where there is not even a single dialogue for like 3-4 minutes but the moments are beautifully captured. It is a must watch show for everyone.

I so wish such shows with so much simplicity and closer to realism are made in India."

Woh Humsafar Tha - Lyrics. Haunting music with beautiful lyrics . lingers on

Tarqe Taluqaat Pay,Roya Na Tu Na Main,
]When we parted ways,Neither you cried nor I,
Lekin Ye Kya Kay Chain Say,Soya Tu Na Main,
But, what is this, A peaceful sleep since,Has not touched our eyes?
Wo Humsafar Thaa,Wo Humsafar Thaa,

Wo Humsafar Thaa Magar Us Sey Humnawai Na Thi,
Wo Humsafar Thaa Magar Us Sey Humnawai Na Thi,
He was my companion, But not in harmony were we,
Kay Dhoop Chaaon Ka,
Kay Dhoop Chaaon Ka Aalam Raha Judai Na Thi,
Like the clouds and sunlight, Together but as apart as can be.
Wo Humsafar Thaa,,,Wo Humsafar Thaa,
He was my companion,

Adaavatein Theen..Taghaaful Tha..Ranjishein Thi Magar.
Adaavatein Theen..taghaaful Tha...Ranjishein Thi Magar.
There were feelings of animosity, Indifference, And anguish between us,
Bicharne Wale Main Sab Kuch Tha Bewafai Na Thi,
Bicharne Wale Main Sab Kuch Tha Bewafai Na Thi,
My departed lover, had been everything, But unfaithful
Kay Dhoop Chaaon Ka,
Kay Dhoop Chaaon Ka Aalam Raha Judai Na Thi,
Like the clouds and sunlight, Together but as apart as can be.
Wo Humsafar Thaa,Wo Humsafar Thaa,
Tarqe Taluqaat Pay,Roya Na Tu Na Main,
Lekin Ye Kya Kay Chain Say,
Soya Tu Na Main,Wo Humsafar Thaa,
Wo Humsafar Thaa,
He was my companion, But not in harmony were we,
When we parted ways,Neither you cried nor I,
But, what is this, A peaceful sleep since,Has not touched our eyes?\
He was my companion,

Kaajal daaro
Put kohl
kurkura surma Saha na jaaye
The graininess of the kohl is tough to bear
Jin Nain mein pee bassay
In the eyes that hold my beloved
Dooja kon samaaye
Who else can be beheld

Bicharte waqt un ankhon mein thi hamari ghazal
At the time of parting his eyes had my song
Bicharte waqt un ankhon mein thi hamari ghazal
At the time of parting his eyes had my song
Ghazal bhi wo jo kisi ko kabhi sunai na thi
And it was the song that I had never sung aloud
Ghazal bhi wo jo kisi ko kabhi sunai na thi
And it was the song that I had never sung aloud

Kay dhoop chaaon ka...
With the (hot) sunshine and shade
Kay dhoop chaaon ka aalam raha
With the (hot) sunshine and shade was world was filled
Judai na thi...
There was no separation

Woh humsafar tha...
He was my companion ...
Woh humsafar tha...
He was my companion ...

KABHI YEH HAAL KAY DONOON MAY
YAKDILI THI BOHUT
There was a time when both of their hearts were joined,
KABHI YEH MERHALA JAISAY KAY AASHANAI NA THI
There was a time when both of their hearts were joined, and then there was a time when they were completely disconnected (nothing in common)

Kay dhoop chaaon ka...
With the (hot) sunshine and shade
Kay dhoop chaaon ka aalam raha
With the (hot) sunshine and shade was world was filled
Judai na thi...
There was no separation

Woh humsafar tha...
He was my companion ...
Woh humsafar tha...
He was my companion .

MOHABATOON KA SAFAR ISS TERHAAN BHI GUZRA THA
The journey of love was traveled in way that
SHIKASTA (Broken / fractured/ miserable state) DIL THAY MUSAFIR
SHIKAST(defeat) PAAI NA THI
(the travelers had broken hearts but not defeated by the circumstances)

KAY DHOOP CHAAOON KA... AALM (state) RAHA JUDAI NA THI

Dhoop Chaoon is used for hard & Good times)
(there was a constant state of Good & Bad times but not separation)
WOH HUMSAFAR THA...
(Humsafar means the person who is traveling with You in a journey)

HAAN WOH HUMSAFAR THA...

. AJEEB HOTI HAI , RAHAY SUKHAN BHI DAIKH NASIR
The path of love is so strange and weird,
WAHAN BHI AA GAYE , AAKHIR , JAHAAN RASAAI NA THI
It has brought us to a point we had never thought we would come to.

Kay dhoop chaaon ka...
With the (hot) sunshine and shade
Kay dhoop chaaon ka aalam raha
With the (hot) sunshine and shade was world was filled
Judai na thi...
There was no separation

Woh humsafar tha...
He was my companion ...
Woh humsafar tha...
He was my companion .

FARHAT ISHTIAQ answers readers Questions on HUMSAFAR

Posted by Sadaf..

Q: Khirad has a silent strength about her that is an inspiration for any woman. Was her character based on any real person from your life? -Neeru

A: Khirad's silent strength was a trait I have seen in my mother. Her big ego and pride were things I have seen in some of my close relations

Q: Humsafar has a happy ending, which we ardent fans are very thankful for but when you were writing the story, did you think of an alternate ending? If yes, why did you choose the one we have all seen? -Neeru

A: When I was writing the novel, it was never ever a question for me that Humsafar could have a sad ending. Asher and Khirad loved each other. There were only misunderstandings, anger and hurt feelings from both sides. Jab ghalat fehmian durr hoin tu unn donon ko mill hi jana tha.

Q: The nuances in Ashar's character were subtle compared to the other characters in Humsafar. Was it deliberate or he just happened to get overshadowed by strong female characters including his mother? -Neeru

A: Asher was a good human being but sadly he was a weak person. Fawad's fans will be angry with my answer but Asher was not a strong man. He was easily manipulated by a few ladies. HS was basically Khirad's story. Asher is not one of my favourite heroes (amongst my own created heroes)

Q: Were Farida's manipulations aimed at getting Asher to marry Sara or was it simply to just be rid of Khirad because she could not share her son with anyone? We ask because Farida never seemed to push Asher to marry Sara very much or was that just pushed to one side in the serial. - Nargis Rasheed

A: Farida just wanted to get rid of Khirad. She used Sara. She was an arrogant and selfish person and she never wanted Asher to marry Sara.

Q: Farida is depicted as a very conniving woman. How can it be possible that her own sibling was not aware of this trait? Were Zarina and Sara, two highly educated ladies, that gullible that they could not see past Farida's false promises? - Nargis Rasheed

A: Zareena knew her sister's negative and selfish nature magar wo beti ki mohabbat aur zidd kay aage majboor ho gai theen.

Q: What scenes would you have included from the novel in the drama if you could and apparently so I have heard that Sarmad added the last rain scene later. For me personally that gave closure to the Ashar and Khirad had we left it where the novel leaves it I think I would always wondered if Khirad had been able to move on. - shazch

A: I don't want to change anything in the novel.

To correct the record let me tell last scene was included on Momina's khawahish. Day before last episode went on air, I got an emergency call from Momina, " Farhat, write a new and romantic kind of scene to end HS on a romantic note. It should have rain and romance". Original last scene was a gardening scene with Asher, Khirad and Hareem. It didn't have romance.

Q: Did you like the last rain scene in the drama? - Sadaf

A: Yes, I loved that new scene. As a viewer I would also want romantic closing of a romantic story. Am happy Momina nai ye add karwaya.

Q: Was the first rain scene which is so romantic with the black dress a part of your script? - Sadaf

A: Yes that first rain scene was mine. I wrote it

Q: What scenes would you have included from the novel in the drama if you could and apparently so I have heard that Sarmad added the last? Also are there any scenes you would have input from the drama to the novel if you could go back and rewrite it. -shazch

A: There are some scenes which I wrote and they were shot but not shown like Asher - Hareem gardening scene and Asher applying nail polish on Hareem's nails. They were cute scenes.

Q: When Khirad gets chocolate ice cream instead of strawberry at coffee shop was it a part of the story? - Roh

A: It was a continuity mistake :-) Didn't know log uss ko bhi discuss karen gai :-)

Q: Why did Ashar smile at Khirad that night when he was looking at her? Was he already changing his mind about how he perceived her presence in his life? What was she writing? - Roh

A: Which night? I don't understand which night you are talking about. In the beginning of their marriage, when Asher had a change of heart for Khirad she was still reluctant to open herself to him. She remained reserved. Usually to avoid Asher, she wrote dairy or sometimes letters to Batool Khala

Q: Why did Khirad agree to have breakfast with Ashar that morning, but refused the nuts he offered to her a few days ago while watching TV? Did she also have a change of heart and decided to listen to Batool Khala and Afsheen's advise of giving the marriage sometime?-Roh

A: Was that breakfast scene after that pool side (night) scene? I remember breakfast scene baad main hota hai. Asher showed his concern for Khirad with his behaviour that night. She sensed his changed attitude and was ready to have breakfast with him. Slowly Khirad ko samajh araha tha kay ye banda itna proud and arrogant bhi nahi jitna lagta hai. Ye Batool khala ya Afsheen kay samjhane ki reason sai nahi hua tha. It was a slow and natural process. They both were falling in love.

Q: In the last scene of reconciliation between Asher and Khirad (after the confrontation with Farida) they both look out as it begins to rain and smile ...I can guess but please I want to know why? - Sadaf

A: Ye viewers ko khush krne kay liye likha gaya scene tha :-)

Q: Is Asher's character based on anyone or is it one of those composite characters writers create sometimes?-Sadaf

A: Asher wesa tha jese ziada tarr humare eastern mard hote hain. Gherat aur ana kay masle boht hain magar sochna kamm kamm hai. Some of his personality traits were taken from different people (males) around me. Remaining were my own observation of man.

I was reading Neeraja Unni ,s reviews as someone took me for her in IF , when told her that its not me then she gave me her id on FB . saw her blog and read ZGH reviews there . then saw this Humsafar,s . she has written in 2011 when it started in Pakistan . She is indian. And now i asked her to write in IF about her reviews on Humsafar , she gave me permission to write here , So the story goes , its not mine . But i loved her introduction with no frills . there were pictures but i do not know how to post here with this post . Lets see . like you as already said i have liked after separation . Yes FK has more challenging role after she goes . his coming back and asking for Khirad and that also so quietly and burning with anger m hurt and all mixed feelings .

Do watch it khamosh, as I read in other thread that you only liked Fawad's acting in the bits and pieces you watched. Watch it for him as I think you will
Not be disappointed from his acting . Will be waiting for your review too once you have watched the full series.
