Episode 5: Sparks
It was ten in the morning when the officers of the Bandra Police Department were called on for an important meeting in the board room. Several officers gathered around in the room, waiting for ACP Kamal Kumar to enter. Once he arrived, all the officers stood up, greeting him with a salute which he humbly returned to them. He came to the his seat and said, "This meeting was called regarding new findings in the murder epidemic of the Bandra area. Inspector Raina, please proceed." ACP Kamal announced.
"Thank you, sir." Inspector Raina said as she stood up from her seat. She went up in front of the large projector screen, next to Officer Rahat, who was handling the laptop, where he pulled up the photo of the boy in the jacket they had discussed in the last meeting. "Fellow officers, as I have further studied this case, I have come across some new findings along with the help of Officer Rahat. From the picture we had discussed earlier, we see the initials K.S. on the back of the jacket of this man. However, if you zoom in, there are more details to be seen," Inspector Raina began. Officer Rahat zoomed in on the picture, showing the initials of the jacket, but also revealing writing next to the initials in another language. "If you see, along with the initials is writing next to it in Urdu. After close examination, Officer Rahat was able to read the writing which read 'Killers Society'.This is believed to represent a group of killers that are lingering around in the deep, dark den of the city."
"But how can we use this to catch them?" ACP Kamal asked.
"I will show you how, sir. From this picture, we have an indication of one of the killers. And from looking at all the murder cases in the area, I've noticed a pattern," Inspector Raina continued. She nodded to Officer Rahat, who pulled up a map of the Bandra area, showing an array of red dots. "Take a look at these red dots. Each dot represents the exact location where the recent murders have occurred. And from what it looks like, ten murders have occurred in what forms a string, coming from the ends of the Bandra map. But what intrigues me...is that we see a total of twenty dots. Ten dots from two sides, the bottom right and bottom left. This means...their next target will formulate from the upper left and upper right of the Bandra area. Basically, they're working their way from the bottom to the top. And other such patterns I found occurred in the areas of Calcutta and Darjeeling. This means...we're dealing with professionals."
"But how are they getting around the area without being noticed by anyone?" ACP Kamal asked.
"Even I asked the same question. But while we look at this map, what is the biggest connection in Bandra to Dahisar?" Inspector Raina said. Just then, Officer Rahat zoomed in the map. "The Western Express Highway. This is the major road which connects both areas. Wherever their whereabouts are, they are able to blend in with the many city goers through this road."
"Great analysis, Inspector Raina," ACP Kamal complimented. "But the question remains...what's the next step?"
"Sir, I have a list of witnesses. And now that we have the trail marked of the Killers Society...we just have to see where they hit next...left or right." Inspector Raina replied.
On the other hand, in the den of the Killers Society, Kabir and Damini stood before Raja, armed and uniformed. "Are you both clear on your job?" Raja asked Kabir and Damini.
"Yes, Raja bhai." Kabir and Damini replied in unison.
"Good. Because I never repeat myself," Raja said. "Now, you know what to do. And don't come back till the job is done."
Nodding, Damini headed out of the den, walking down the tunnel. Raja looked at Kabir and said, "Remember...be careful with that woman."
"Yes, Raja bhai. I won't do what Aryan did once." Kabir said, putting his arm to his chest. Raja patted Kabir on his shoulder and grinned, "This is why you're my best. Now go."
With that, Kabir headed out of the den. Little did he know was that Aryan was listening to everything from the right hall. A tear ran down his face.
Once she was out of the hideout, Damini stepped out onto the grass, feeling the cool breeze of the day. I wonder how these people stay underground all day. But now, I'm back to the open wild of the city, Damini thought to herself. She turned around to see Kabir trying to get up to the ground from the entrance. Damini gave her hand to Kabir. He looked up at her, unsure. But he grabbed hold of her hand and Damini pulled him upward, making him slip and bump into her. His hand had touched her right shoulder, and he awkwardly looked right at her. Her deep brown eyes stared into him as he continued to look at her. Kabir took his hand away, snapping out of it. This will be difficult Those eyes continue to haunt me, Kabir thought to himself. Kabir made his way and began walking, while Damini followed. "How are we making it to the place?" Damini asked.
"By bike. Do you have one?" Kabir asked.
"Unfortunately no. I damaged my last bike two years back in a road accident." Damini replied.
"Then, we'll have to make do with my bike." Kabir said.
Kabir went towards his motorcycle, taking out the helmet on it. Damini looked at the motorcycle's stunning silver colored physique with a touch of ivory black paint. Kabir held out the helmet for Damini. "You'll need this." Kabir said.
"No need for this," Damini replied. "I'll drive."
"What?! How can you drive this?!" Kabir asked. "This is a different bike!"
"I wasn't riding a scooter before this! I can drive better than you!" Damini boasted.
Kabir's eyes beamed at Damini's statement. "Is it so?" Kabir asked. "I'll be the judge of that."
Damini got on the front of the bike, while Kabir sat in the back. She started the engine and began driving onto the streets. As she was driving, her long, raven black hair began to blow in the wind, right onto Kabir's face. He tried to move it out of the way, but the hair continued to blow in front of him. Damini was unaware of it as she continued to keep her attention on the road. Kabir felt as if he was in a complete daze as he sat on the bike behind Damini, with her hair brushing his face. The smooth, silky texture of her hair sent sparks inside Kabir as it touched his face. He tried to compose himself, thinking Snap out of it, Kabir. The closer you get, the worse it will be for you.
At the moment while Damini was driving, she rode the bike over a pothole on the road, causing the bike to bump a bit. This made Kabir's hands thwart onto Damini's shoulders with his face getting closer to hers. That was when Damini could see the proximity between them. Her eyes beamed as she felt the touch of Kabir's soft, delicate hands onto her shoulders while her hair continued to blow in his face. What's happening? I've never experienced this kind of closeness before. And yet...there's so much innocence in it, Damini thought to herself. This guy is something I have never seen before. But I have to focus...I have a job to concentrate on so I can stay in my place.
Kabir let his hands off of Damini, while Damini pulled her hair back on her shoulder with her left hand. "I'm sorry." Kabir said softly.
"Its okay." Damini replied.
Later on, Damini stopped the bike near the entrance of the Western Express Highway. "So now what?" Damini asked Kabir.
"We'll stop for a bit and eat something. As long as we get the job done prior to tomorrow, Raja will be satisfied." Kabir said. Kabir got off the bike with Damini following him on the street. Little were they aware of the fact that Officer Rahat was spying on them from behind the wall of a nearby shop on the other side of the road. He placed his phone to his ear and said, "Raina...I got my eye on them."
"Good," Inspector Raina replied from the other end. "Now we'll follow them to their next target. Once we counter them...we'll strike."
