His behaviour towards that secretary was unbelievably rude. I don't understand how that was funny, was it the fact that it made her cry on the spot?

You never ever call someone fat. Ever. It's not about saying the truth or being politically correct, it is plain rude and that kind of comment can truly hurt someone.
