NAME TO KNOW: SANAM SAEED

BY VATSALA CHHIBBER

Hammy, high-decibel TV serials were on their way out, we knew that. But that their replacements would be quietly riveting shows from Pakistan was a bit of a surprise. Even for Sanam Saeed, the pigheaded protagonist Kashaf of Zindagi Gulzar Hai, a romantic drama referred to as Pakistan's Pride And Prejudice, which premiered in India on channel Zindagi. "I was blown away by the positive response to our small show," she says. "Especially since India is aeons ahead in entertainment, with bigger budgets and stars."

Stardom came easy to the former model, who became the face of Pakistani TV after her second drama Mera Naseeb, "I played an angsty, rebellious girl, similar to Kashaf," says the 29-year-old. "I'm a bit of a bore, I like to do serious roles with strong women characters." The London-born actor, who moved to Karachi at the age of six, hopes the success of Pakistani dramas in India will quell stereotypes about her country. "People think Karachi is war-torn and Pakistanis are angry, vengeful and backward," she says. "With shows like Zindagi you see the power that women (like Umera Ahmed, the show's writer) have through the stories they tell."

Though offers from India are starting to pour in, Saeed is hesitant to have her first trip here be about work. "India is very intimidating, I don't feel confident enough," she confesses. With two new Pakistani dramas, a film and a wedding next year filling up her calendar, Saeed's immediate goal is to find time for cook-ins with friends. "I'm booked with work till December, so I look forward to regular things like dinner conversations."

Sanam is not only a brilliant actor, but she has a great script sense. She has the knack of picking up some amazing characters tht r pretty diverse and challenging to play and I don't mean tht all her shows r superhit or even good, but all the characters she has played r exciting for an actor to perform and being such a good actor she invariably performs them well nd get appreciated for them.
Unfortunately in BW we don't have well etched female roles for out top actresses too, so I am kind of skeptical that Sanam wld get such roles in her kitty and I wld rather not watch her in BW than watch her doing unsubstantial roles.

no bollywood has some really powerful female roles take Mary Kom, Queen , Mardani and i know she will not accept any random role but if she gets to play strong role than that will be great but i really will love if she gets a bubbly happy fun loving girl role will love to see how she would perform

All the best for her work and impending wedding. Best of luck.

Hope she gets to visit India one day and it helps to change her perception about it being very intimidating. India has been very appreciating about her work in zgh too and hope she gets to experience that for in real.

Thanks wonderful actress and loved this interview. She should do some work in India. Thanks to ZGH she has become a household name in India.

I understand why she feels intimidated here because the industry is big and also for an outsider to come here she must feel unsure. But she should know many here are wanting to see and meet her in India just like they did for Fawad. Ofcourse in case of Fawad all the women are crazy about him so a little more edge for him here.

Hope she continues to work after marriage she is immensely talented to give up the craft. Will be a loss for her fans.

I don't find Sanam being comfortable even in d Pak industry, which she has been part of for such a long time, in the sense that she is reserved and awkward when giving interviews and being the center of attention, which is so un-celebrity thing for a celeb. So I can understand her being intimidated by India, coz here all this media focus is much more.

And believe me I kinda felt bad for Fawad coz of all d time he had to devout for the publicity of KS, which I feel actors like Fawad nd Sanam wld not exactly be comfortable doing. They would rather spend that much of time working and let their work speak for itself.
