This is a bit off topic but i loved what I found out today abt a practice followed in Kerala wherein the boy child is given the last name of the mother and if its a girl child then the fathers surname is given . What a wonderful way to acknowledge not just ur father but also ur mother.

yes good practice
I know of castes/places where wife do not change father sur name after marriage she retain maiden name all life as respect to father who gave birth
In some place children are given father and mother surname after child name and mother retains her maiden surname
that also is a great practice usually south india and east india has many progressive practices

Yes it's a great practice. I have also heard that in some north-eastern state, I think Meghalaya, the girl child inherits all the property not the boy. And the boy goes to the girl's house after marriage.
