SPOILER WARNING!

Fans go mad for Harry Potter by Pru Vincent and Ed Cooper Clarke .
Wednesday, 04 July 2007

Not even torrential rain kept the fans away from Leicester Square, and the European premiere of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Hundreds of fans, mainly young girls, crammed into the Squareto chant "Harry, Harry, Harry" - drowning out the occasional crack of thunder.

Some waved home made banners. One read: "Show us your wand, Harry baby."

It's rather wonderful, really."

The film features his first on-screen clinch with Katie Leung, who plays Cho Chang.

He said: "She's a very good kisser."

Responding to the rumour that the on-screen kiss took 30 takes, Rupert Grint, who plays Harry's close friend Ron Weasley, said with a smile: "That's what I heard."

Grint said Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was darker than previous films.

He added: "I think everyone's grown up in this one."

Asked how he felt about the film's franchise coming to an end, he said: "It's been a big part of my life. A really cool experience."

J K Rowling made a rare public appearance at the premiere and spoke of writing the final book in the series.

"Finishing it was very, very emotional. It was a combination of relief and sadness really," she said.

The publicity-shy writer said seeing the crowd in Leicester Square was "fantastic" but she was shocked to hear that some fans had camped overnight.

She said fans in the crowd had asked lots of questions about the final book but she refused to answer.

"They've only got two weeks to wait now so I'm not being too mean," she said.

She said the final book would be the last Harry Potter story and she was not tempted to change her mind, adding: "It is really what it was always planned to be."

Asked what plans she had for the near future Rowling said: "I'm looking forward to going on holiday."

Rowling, who is a supporter of new Prime Minister Gordon Brown, was asked if she would ever consider going into government but laughed and said: "Absolutely not."

Also at last night's premiere were Leung; Emma Watson, who plays Harry's friend Hermione Granger; Imelda Staunton, who plays Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Dolores Umbridge; and Helena Bonham Carter, who plays Lord Voldemort devotee Bellatrix Lestrange, with her partner, director Tim Burton.

Fans who braved the rain included Vicky Martini, 24, and Deborah Silva, 19, who held a banner reading: "We came from Brazil for extra potion classes."

Among the celebrities who turned out despite the rain were models Sophie Dahl and Jodie Kidd, singer Lily Allen and Dr Who actor David Tennant.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix sees Harry return to Hogwarts for his fifth year, but his integrity is called into question when some of the wizard community doubt the truth of the story of the teenager's recent encounter with Lord Voldemort.

The seventh and last book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is released on July 21. Internet retailer Amazon.com said nearly 1.6 million people worldwide had pre-ordered the book.
That beats the 1.5 million advance orders which the website took for the sixth book Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

You'll be able to watch out video from the premiere, and see interviews with the stars of the film, very soon!

SPOILER WARNING!

Rowling joins Potter stars at London premiere, sad about last book

Author J.K. Rowling expressed both sadness and relief on completing the final Harry Potter book as she joined fans at the European premiere of the latest movie about the wizard-in-training.

"Finishing it was very, very emotional. It was a combination of relief and sadness really," she said in London on Tuesday night about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, to be published July 21.

"It's been a hell of a month," said the 41-year-old author, who added that she plans to take a long holiday soon.

Fans pleaded for details but Rowling remained mute about the final outcome in which two main characters are slated to die. The author, now a billionaire, said she has even kept the plot from her family.

The book has become the most pre-ordered item on Amazon, reaching 1.6 million pre-sales. More than 325 million copies of the first six books have been sold around the world. < = =text/> // <\/>'); // ]]> < = src="http://ad.doubleclick.net/adj/aolc.cbc.ca/artsentertainment/film;ptile=3;sz=300x250;ord=9824024343133966?" =text/>

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson — who star as Harry, Ron and Hermione in all five movies — were on hand for the premiere of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Tuesday in central London. They greeted screaming fans, some of whom camped overnight at the theatre to get a good view of their stars.

"We're a big gang. We call it the Harry Potter family," said Watson, who believes the latest instalment is the "most genuine."

Watson noted the ever-growing number of fans at every premiere: "It gets bigger and bigger."

Other actors on hand at the premiere included Imelda Staunton, who plays Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Dolores Umbridge and Helena Bonham Carter, who plays Lord Voldemort devotee Bellatrix Lestrange.

Radcliffe said Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which opens worldwide next week, is darker but the 17-year-old said he enjoyed the challenge.

"That's what makes them more exciting for me as an actor," Radcliffe said. "That's a lot more fun to do than just the action side of things. While there's not actually direct comedy, there's some really heartfelt emotion."

The actor also had his first onscreen kiss with Katie Leung, who plays fellow classmate Cho Chang.

"She's a very good kisser," said Radcliffe.

Daniel Radcliffe goes looking for love as the Harry Potter stars have a ball

04.07.07

He's almost 18, a movie star and worth at least 25million.

Oh, and didn't Daniel Radcliffe mention he's also looking for a girlfriend?

The resulting throng of girls around the Harry Potter star appeared to be auditioning for the role.

Hemming him in on all sides, they smothered him in attention, asking for his phone number, for a peck on the cheek, an autograph, or to pose with them for a picture.

And now he gives her his full attention as the others watch - just who is this beguiling young woman?

Such was the attraction that extra security was needed for Radcliffe at the private party to celebrate the European premiere of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

While thousands of screaming fans were safely kept outside, it was the mothers, wives, girlfriends, sisters and daughters of film industry executives who mobbed Radcliffe at the party.

The celebrations, at a converted warehouse in Billingsgate, East London, had been strictly invitation only, with no media allowed. Cast and crew usually use such occasions to let their hair down away from the public eye.

Not Radcliffe. He spent three hours cornered by girls, having to stand up every few moments to pose with the admirers who formed a queue to meet him.

On and on it went, with Radcliffe occasionally having to be escorted by two security guards to the mens' room.

By 2am he looked like he had lost the will to live as yet another admirer asked him to pose for a picture.

But the young actor, who had declared at the premiere in Leicester Square that he would like a girlfriend, perhaps only had himself to blame.

He said: "I don't have a girlfriend but I hope to at some point.

"There is one particularly beautiful redhead I saw in the crowd who I'm looking forward to signing an autograph for later." Asked if that meant he had a soft spot for redheads, the 18-year-old replied: "I just like all girls really."

Keep those eyes open!

His co-stars looked as though they were having a sligthly easier time of it.

Despite not being old enough to drink, Emma Watson showed the more experienced celebrities how to party up a storm at the Harry Potter afterparty in Old Billingsgate Market.

The 17-year-old actress, who plays Hermione, joined her costar Daniel in celebrating the film's premiere, and they certainly didn't let the weather rain on their parade.

Co-stars Rupert Grint, 18, who plays Ron Weasley, and Katie Leung, 19, Harry's love interest Cho Chang, really let their hair down, dancing the night away to cheesy music at the bash.

They were joined by Lily Allen, Sophie Dahl and Peaches Geldof.

But author JK Rowling and Helena Bonham Carter fled the bash early with their other halves.

Lily Allen, who once claimed she never goes to premieres, was asked if she fancied Harry Potter, and she joked: "He's not really my type - I'm more of a Weasley type."

Look out Rupert.

Katie Leung, 19, who plays Harry's love interest Cho Chang, was bemoaning her lack of a love life.

Wearing a gold Lanvin dress and Christian Louboutin shoes, she spoke of being "miserably single". Asked if she would like a relationship with Radcliffe she replied: "Maybe - I'm keeping my options open."

Evanna Lynch, who plays Luna Lovegood and Emma also posed for photographers, while Harry Potter's creator J.K. Rowling made a rare public appearance.

She spoke of finishing the seventh and final book in the series, The Deathly Hallows, which is published on July 21.

"Finishing it was very, very emotional. It was a combination of relief and sadness really," she said.

Rowling was shocked to hear that some fans had camped overnight to catch a glimpse of their favourite magical characters.

"No. They haven't?' she asked. "Poor, poor things."

Harry Potter premiere

Daniel Radcliffe, with his costars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, describes his hearthrob status as 'rather wonderful'

But she was evidently pleased at their enthusiasm.

"It's fantastic and they're holding books and that's the best thing."

Asked what the crowd had to say, she noted: "They're asking all the obscure questions and I can't say yes or no. But they've only got two weeks to wait now so I'm not being too mean."

She indicated that the final book would indeed be the last Harry Potter, and, when asked if she had been tempted to change her mind, she said: "No, it is really what it was always planned to be."

That may leave some sad, but as for Daniel, he could at least take some consolation in the 25million deal he has signed to star in the remaining two Potter films. This makes him by far the country's highest-paid teenage actor and outdoes even heavyweights such as James Bond star Daniel Craig.

"The money is absolutely fantastic and I'm very grateful, but it's not the main thing that drives me," he said earlier. "Being on Fortune ( magazine) lists is all very nice, but I am my own person."
