Part 11:
He replied naughtily, "So are you prescribing an apple a day to bring the dentist closer?"
"All I am saying is 'Help yourself''" pat came her reply and an apple thrown to him. He caught it and she walked away saying, "I am off to the kitchen to find what I can cook for lunch"
He felt relieved hearing her reply in a casual manner. She was indeed shedding away her stiffness and loosening up with him. He just voiced to himself, "sharmaagayi madrasan...accha hai!"
***************************************
She was shocked at the sight of the kitchen. A few toasts and coffee was all he made but the kitchen looked like a war zone with all the vessels and containers lying off the shelves. Her smiles vanished the moment she saw the messed up state. She frowned as she looked around and saw the used vessels on the kitchen counter. It was going to be a tough time clearing it all up. The bottles with various powders lay displaced out of the shelves. It was clear that he had been searching for something and in the process had pulled down everything else. He entered the kitchen suggesting, "Let's cook together" and then stopped in his tracks seeing her stunned and glancing around the kitchen. He knew what she was thinking.
He sheepishly smiled at her while she voiced, "Looks like you have done a lot of cooking Raman"
Raman chuckled at her remark and replied, "sorry...thoda messed up hai!"
Ishita rolled her eyes amused at his apology and voiced, "thoda??"
Raman ruffled his hair embarrassed and grinned silently while Ishita started clearing up the kitchen counter. She kept all the bottles back and then cleans up the used vessels.
He tries to help her but sensing her uneasiness when he was very close to her, he steps back allowing her to do it in her comfort zone. She feels happy when she notices his gestures, which was evidently telling her how well he understood her and her body language. Such small gestures and moves from his side were giving her more confidence and faith in him and also convinced her time and again that she wouldn't be doing a mistake if she starts trusting him like she did long before. He indeed was a gem of a person and his love for her was clear from the warmth and comfort he showered on her.
First she keeps rice and dal in the cooker and then starts working on the other dishes.
Soon after, she moves to the fridge to pick up the vegetables and she saw that he has stocked it up with many vegetables and mostly the ones which she normally uses for cooking. She was indeed pleased by the fact that he still remembered her tastes and distastes so keenly. Subbu was never into such pampering. Yes he used to shoulder house hold responsibilities but somehow never had he managed to touch her deeply with his romantic gestures.
Raman was doing it all so effortlessly and Ishita couldn't help but get charmed by him. Now that she thought about it, she felt all of Subbu's focus was just for himself. His thoughts and all his planning was self centered. At that time, she didn't feel anything weird but now after knowing what he was trying to hide from her, she could see that everything Subbu did was to keep her attention to just him and not to probe more into anything else. His reality had brought to light all his selfishness and vested interests.
She sighed deeply as she took out the vegetables and walked back to the sink. He noticed that she took vegetables of his choice. Though not a keen fan of vegetables, he loved cauliflower and potatoes and that's exactly what she chose.
He couldn't hide his joy and excitement seeing that she still remembered his preferences "Tumhe yaad tha?"
She continued to wash the vegetables and hummed, "hmmm" after a long pause, she added with a warm sweet smile, "jaise aapko yaad tha ke mera favourites kya hai?"
In those few moments, he could see a glimpse of the Ishu he knew. He smiled at that and came closer enquiring, "You haven't changed really Ishu...but you"
She turned around to look at him and jerked back as he was so close to her. Her sudden turning around and the subsequent jerk made him stop what he was saying but it was clear that he intended to say that Ishita was just pretending to have changed but haven't changed from what she was before.
She got his meaning and replied, "insaan kabhi nahi badaltha Raman...sirf waqt badaltha hai..."
He was quick to reply, "Aur kisi smart insaan ne kaha hai ke waqt ke saath saath insaan ko aage badhna chahiye...jaise ke..."
His words trailed off but he stepped closer to her. She stepped back and stood against the kitchen counter puzzled at his sudden move towards her. He was real close to her as if testing the waters before entering into it. She didn't react neither did she have any changed expressions of retaliating against his move. His hands brush past her hand and her waist. She closed her eyes in an instinct.
He just put the weight on the cooker and pulled back his hands. Then instantly moved away from her muttering, "Woh cooker ka weight..."
Her closed eyes made him smile and he could exactly read what ran across in her mind in those few seconds. She looked so innocent and pretty, like a fresh blooming flower!
He had to do a lot of self restraint to hold back his urge to cup her face in his hands and kiss those cherry like lips. He looked away from her trying to distract his attention to something else but nothing felt so compelling and tempting as her. So he turned back to her and grinned, "Ishita, aankhen kholo...maana ke tum mujhe bohat tempt kar rahi ho aur mujhe bhook bhi lagi hai but I am not going to eat you up..."
She flushed at that and turned back to her work to save the situation. He naughtily grinned and slid beside her to lean against the counter explaining his double meaning dialog, "I meant your cooking makes me all the more hungry..." after a pause, he added much to her relief, "I mean for lunch"
His naughty antics and talks were making her heart flutter and pace up like it had just begun a marathon of sorts.
Feigning total ignorance to her flushed state, he took a piece of sliced carrot in his hand. Examining it, he enquired, "tum cooking kaise seeki, huh?"
He remembered that the last thing she ever wanted to do was cooking. She always fretted over sulking and sweating out in the kitchen. The perfectly diced carrot told him that she had become an expert in cooking. Previously, she used to cut it all uneven and big that she used to get scolding from her amma. He laughed as those good old memories replayed in his mind.
She could perfectly understand what he was thinking. She replied, "US mein kuch karne ko nahi tha...so I had joined some cooking classes...bohat kuch seekha hai...Subbu was a complete foodie..."
She stopped abruptly realizing her slip of tongue. It had just come in an impulse. She regretted having brought Subbu into their conversation.
He understood her thoughts of regret and patted her consolingly, "That's ok Ishu...main samajh saktha hoom...It is never easy to forget"
She nodded gratefully but also thought to herself if it was the same for him. Was he also reminded of his life and sweet moments with his first wife? Then he smacked herself for the silly thought answering her own question that thoughts about their past was indeed inevitable.
She snapped out when he tossed the carrot piece into his mouth. She chuckled, "Since when have you started eating raw carrots?"
He used to mock her for eating carrot slices commenting that raw carrots are for rabbits while Ishita being health conscious used to eat a lot of raw vegetables in the form of salads. He used to tease her that she was plain lazy and was cooking up reasons for not to cook.
The good old times were suddenly dawning upon them and making them realize how close they were previously.
He coughed and grinned cheekily and he replied, "Carrots healthy hai na? toh khaane ki khoshish kar raha hoom...ab doctor se shaadi ki hai toh aise health aur diet ka khaas dhyaan rakhna padega na?"
That made her smile and then she mocked him, "Doctor ko impress karne ki khoshish, huh?"
Raman chuckled and then replied naughtily, "Yeh lo...and I thought I impressed her already..."
Ishita smiled to herself and replied not looking to his side but just trying to focus on her work, "Its not that easy Mr Raavan Kumar...yeh doctor thodi hattke hai...usspe aapke jaadu nahi chalega"
Raman was happy that she was opening up a bit and talking casually playfully with him like before. He instantly replied, "shukar hai, atleast tum ne maan liya ke mujh mein koyi toh jaadu zaroor hai!"
Ishita slightly blushed at her slip being caught by him and turned away to wash something.
He knew that her blush was for him and due to him. He liked the feel of it and it really felt good to leave such an impact on the girl whom he loved so much. He controlled his inner urge to grab her closer and get a feel of her crimson red cheeks with his. He smiled naughtily at his naughty desire. He chose to switch the topic to prevent his further advances on that front.

He saw her eyes filling up with tears as she started cutting the onions. He decided to pitch in to help and moved her aside voicing, "hatto, main kartha hoom"
"arre main karloongi Raman"
She tried to take the place again but then he was stubborn and insisted that he will do it. So she smiled and let him do it. She started cooking the Aloo Gobi which was his favourite.
He felt so happy at the thought of her doing something just for him. Only his mother had done such things for him. Shagun had never once tried to find his tastes and distastes or cooked for him once. Even when the cook was on leave, she preferred to order food from outside.
Perhaps amidst the roaming thoughts, his focus slipped away and the knife accidently cut his fingers. He yelped in pain and she rushed to him, "aiyooo Raman, kya hua?"
She took his cut finger in hers and dragged him to the tap to wash it. He followed her as if hypnotized. She washed away the cut and then enquired about the first aid box. He pointed to a draw where the box was kept.
Making him sit down on the kitchen stool, she kneeled down before him and started doing the first aid. As she cleaned the blood using the cotton, he saw her eyes getting flooded with tears. She was trying hard to hide her tears but in vain.
She was continuously muttering as she tried to put a band-aid, "maine kaha tha ke main karloongi...you are too stubborn Raman...ab dekho kitna khoon beh raha hai...aiyooo murugan..."
He sat there trying to read what her eyes communicated to him. Even if she didn't show it out or tell him, he was able to understand the depth of her love and concern for him. He literally forgot his pain as he drowned in her intense deep eyes which told him how much she loved him. He knew that it was just a matter of time when she would run into his arms whole heartedly and tell him how much she loved him and missed him all these days...
