A Gladiator ? Not Really

Okay lots of gladiators ended up in a blood sport not by choice. But Jodha Akbar CVs really wanted Jalal at his meanest and most bone chilling. All the pent up fury that Jalal is supposed to have had for the very deliberate crimes of Adham Khan was on display.

It's a conundrum to work out whether the murder of Atgah Khan was what lit Jalal's fuse or was it the whole exposure of Maham Anga last week. What a contrast that Atifa scandal was to the finality of today's events. Or has Jalal always suspected and tried to avoid the truth until 1562. It's always a challenge when fact and fiction are mixed for dramatic purposes. How do even the actors reconcile these discrepancies. Whatever it is they do, they certainly succeeded yesterday.

Chetan was brilliant just for the lugubrious way in which he confronts his foes. Like some out of control juggernaut. He doesn't flay about but just keeps going forward leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. The scene where he gets hit by the gigantic vase - the best.

Ashwini playing a Maham Anga who was vacillating and time traveling. Trying to reconcile her feelings for Jalal with her mamta for Adham, alternating between talking to little Jalal from years ago and the emperor Jalal. The previous day she had had an apparition of the boy Jalal with the same blood splatter. She is unravelling badly and Jalal knows it. The most august moment for me here was how she said the words Takht...aur Taaj to Jalal in a way that was in one breath both matter of fact and draped with a tired familiarity.

Rajat kept very still and conveyed how deliberate Jalal was. He was not a rampaging bull, earlier screams to the awaam not withstanding. Power displayed in such a chilling manner that the harem ladies couldn't drag their eyes away. What they were seeing was really what was keeping them all safe at this juncture. He was their lord protector of the realm. He defined who they were. His identity was their identity. No running away from this. Hamida Banu knew that, so did Gulbadan Begum. Witnesses were necessary, no matter how gruesome. This was about getting real in the sixteenth century. Rukkaiya started out with a triumphant look, that became progressively alarmed, but not quite sickened. Salima was uncomfortably reminded of more violent times and was grateful to be able to take Rahim away. Jodha was not wanting to accept the sudden violent turn of events when she had been so playful with jalal only a short time before.

But what could he do...really...what could an emperor do. He had to make up his mind, he had to drag his heart to a place where it agreed with his decision to end it. His mother was in his embrace. Even if she represented everything that was evil in his court, she was in his embrace. But this was an end of something... only Jalal knows what...

A beautiful description of all the emotions in the episode ... Especially bringing new women to the episode.
He was the Shehenshah ... Dispenser of justice

I actually thinking of only one thing ... Justice for Atgah Khan and all the criminals of Adham Khan ... As he described each time he was thrown

If anything he probably realized if he had dispensed justice earlier ... What could have been preserved

I thought This was not about Maham Anga at all ... And what she had done ... He still didn't know how he would face her

The after effects on Maham Anga seemed to be an after thought for him ... When HB was telling him only he could tell her ... There was a numbness

you are probably right Divy, he couldn't face her at the start. Downcast eyes. But the more she spoke, the more he was able to just look at her. Yes, numbness will be there ...might come in waves.

I think he looked into her eyes ... To give her strength and emotional support as she gradually realized the truth

there you go. Strong man is our Jalal. I can never measure his strength of character, it has too many facets like a diamond. No two character traits are the same, neither are they out of place in the same soul. Isn't the human soul capable of so much. Amazing...that we all have untapped capacities.

Wow paddy,
Beautiful post.First we should applaud Ashwini and Rajat .It was their day.By that takth and Taj dialogue ,I felt ,MA realized at that time ,Adham was not a right contender for that,But why she never realized this first. As according to hierarchy ,it would belong to Mirza if something happened to Jalal.
Why on earth she never realized that even a lady like Mahac was quiet for so many years Becoz Jalal is the kIng.She knows what Jalal is capable of.If Adham would become King ,Mahac would take a minute in destroying him.
All those so called rebels are quiet Becoz they are afraid of Jalal. How can an impulsive and foolish Adham become a King ? Why oh why,MA were you so blinded in your son's love that you forgot your own political wisdom,
Today Jallaludin Mohammad Akbar proved to the world nobody just nobody can mess with him.

yes, that was the screaming part - no amplified sound systems those days.

of course he could not spare traitors. But this ferocious display sent messages to everybody. Awaam as well as insiders.

Rashmi, I think ... MA was living in her own world. She had constructed some fantasy and started believing that her closeness to the throne means she can get it for Adham. She didn't see anything wrong in it, didn't let logic enter her sharp mind. She didn't have to because she had manipulated Jalal quite successfully before.
