Are actors who appeal to one gender disadvantaged?

Even though the khans have been typecaste in romance roles sometimes they have managed to take roles that appeal to men and women. So it's not odd to find fans from both groups. Double the fans, double the viewership.
Even actors who where specifically endorsed when they first entered Bollywood based on their looks and desirability to the opposite gender where able to break out of it.

So when they where eye candy they appealed to men. But later took women centric roles. So now you find both male and female fans.

For female the ones first introduced as chocolate boys only really appealed to women. For romance movies. Later took on more masculine roles and now there are guys who are fans of them aswell

right now with the new lot its Parineeti Chopra and Sidharth Maholtra.

I don't think I have ever encountered male fans of them at ALL

Just female. So they really are not targeting two demographics but one. So less viewership

So are they disadvantaged?

Best actors are those that appeal to families I guess because they don't just target one gender but male, female, young and old.

I guess that is one of the keys too success. You are able to appeal to everyone.

Personally, I think as a star it's important to appeal to a wide diversity of people: younger men, younger women, older men, older women, girls, boys, families etc...That's what helps in bringing star power. In addition you obviously have to have the talent as well. You can't be loved my various age groups, but suck at what you do. I think in today's generation people tend to like the actor or actress based on looks solely. 'Oh she was hot in that item song.' Or 'he looks so hot.' Its not about 'oh he acted so well in that film.' In the older days the focus was more on acting. Of course looks always played a factor. Not denying that at all. But talent was appreciated more to an extent.

I think most of the well known actors and actresses have a diverse fan base. We can generalize that so and so has a greater fan base amongst women or so and so has a greater fan base amongst men, but most of the well known celebs have a diverse fan range. And that is important in today's times.

You're right to a large degree. Actors that are immensely liked by both genders obviously do really well in BW. Take Salman and Katrina for example. They have very loyal male and female fans.

Agree it does..But I feel it depends on the actor/actress to a certain extent..Lets say for example..Imran and Ranbir started around the same time..both had a fair share of female fan following then..guys were not interested..But then Ranbir took risks and proved his calibre and now I see guys liking him equally...unlike Imran..

Yes it is a disadvantage.
For someone to be bigger as a star he or she needs to have appeal across different sections of audience. Be it kids, females, males or older persons.

Not being sexist but I think appealing to males is a tad more important for a star because men dominate paying public at ticket counters in India.

Choco faces don't go higher up the ladder lest they reinvent themselves. This is why Rishi remained an also ran while someone like Aamir came in top runners.

Limited appeal in one group cannot sail a star's boat for long.
