Chapter Eighteen
It was 2 AM.
Sanyukta tried. She really tried. Her eyes were swollen, her face a mess of tears and snot, her heart broken into a million pieces. She didn't know. She didn't know the truth. She didn't know why he lied to her... or when he lied to her. He told her the other day that he hadn't been with anyone else, right before they made love.
She clutched her pillow tightly to her chest and continued to sob. They made love. It was such a beautiful moment. Even now, the memories of his lips on her body made her feel complete. She wanted to treasure the moment, she wanted to be with him. She loved him. God, she loved him so much.
Why was life so cruel?
First she left him when they loved each other so much. She hurt him more than she ever understood. And now that everything could be okay again, they were both hurt. Why?
He said he was with someone else.
Suddenly, everything seemed to make sense. Sana, the girl from work. That was probably who she was. If that was her, then Randhir outright lied to her. Not that he didn't already.
She cried into her pillow again, not sure about how she would be able to tolerate this heartbreak.
She heard the door click open downstairs. She threw her pillow on the ground, picked up her handkerchief and wiped her face dry before running downstairs. She was still sniffling when she saw Randhir.
He was on the ground by the door, his face buried in his knees.
Feeling her heart ache seeing him in that condition, she rushed up to him and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.
She didn't care. If he was seeing someone, she didn't care. She would leave his life quietly if he truly wanted her to leave, but she just couldn't see him like this.
He looked up, his eyes bloodshot red. He grabbed her arms tightly and pulled her close. She could smell whiskey on his breath.
"Don't tell me you drove like this Randhir," she whispered fearfully.
He pulled her into his arms, and hugged her, crying onto her shoulder. She stroked his hair gently, losing herself in his arms.
"Just one glass... I am a bad person," he said hoarsely, holding her tightly. "I hate myself Sanyukta."
"Shh, you aren't," she whispered. "It's all my fault Randhir. I left you. I shouldn't have done that. Please don't cry."
He held her more tightly and started to cry harder.
"Sanyukta," he said, his lips pressed against her shoulder, inhaling her scent. "Please never forgive me."
She pulled back and looked into his eyes. She wiped his tears with her hands and shook her head.
"Don't say that Randhir," she whispered, cupping his face in her hands.
He was so broken. How could she possibly be angry at him? She needed to be there for him right now, she needed to make sure he smiled.
"I lied to you Sanyukta," he sobbed, throwing his arms around her in a bone-crushing hug once again. "I lied to you."
He was clinging on to her like a little child who was on the verge of drowning, and she rubbed his back soothingly. She was going to save him.
"Randhir, it's okay," she said, closing her eyes. "I told you, I'll take whatever you give me. We can forget about it and move on."
"Sanyukta," he cried, "We slept together and now this lie. I'm hurting you so much."
She shook her head again.
"Randhir I told you, I wouldn't regret it," she whispered soothingly. "I'm here for you. You know that."
She pulled back and looked into his eyes, wiping his tears one more time.
"Answer one thing for me though... who do you want to spend your life with?" she asked seriously. "I promise, if you want to be with me, I'll help you confront her... and if you want to be with her, I'll walk away from your life."
"I love you Sanyukta," he said, breaking down again and resting his head on her lap.
"Then you'll stay with me," she said firmly. "I don't care about the past Randhir, but we're going to build our own future together."
"Sanyukta look at me, I'm a mess," he replied, sobbing.
"Randhir," she whispered, tears streaming down her own face, "I love you regardless."
He removed his face from her lap and leaned towards her, taking her hands in his.
"Sanyukta," he said firmly, honesty in his voice. "I promise you, that from now on, I won't hurt you anymore."
Then he kissed her hands one by one and hugged her again. She hugged him back, smiling into his chest, willing to forget the past to start a new future with Randhir.
"I promise that I will love you and be with you for the rest of my life, no matter what hardship you're going through," she said, pulling back and touching his cheek lovingly.
He pressed his lips against hers with urgency and she responded with the same passion. It was a short and sweet kiss, but once he pulled back, she felt herself wanting more.
Realizing that they were seated on the ground of the corridor, right in front of the entrance, Randhir picked her up in his arms and took her into his bedroom before closing the door with his foot. He placed her on the bed gently and sat next to her.
She rested her head on his shoulder and took his hand in hers before bringing it up to her lips and kissing it.
"Randhir, who is she?" she asked. "Is it... Sana?"
Randhir removed her from his body and turned around to face her, holding her hand tightly.
"No, Sana likes Gerwyn, our boss," Randhir told her with a small smile. "And he likes her too."
Sanyukta's mouth dropped open. "Really? Wow!"
Randhir chuckled. "Yeah."
"So who is she?" Sanyukta pressed on.
"Vidhushi."
Her mouth nearly dropped open again, and suddenly she remembered that day in FITE when she saw Vidhushi really close to Randhir. She knew that Randhir would never cheat on her, but back then she always had an inkling that Vidhushi was either trying to interfere in Randhir's life or she genuinely wanted to get closer to him.
"What?!"
He nodded, not saying another word.
Sanyukta took his face in her hands and looked directly into his eyes.
"It's okay Randhir... we'll talk to her, we'll make her understand," she told him positively.
"And if she refuses to leave me?" he asked her calmly.
"Randhir, she'll have to. I'll tell her that I'm not leaving you at any cost," she said, squeezing his hand. "Don't worry."
He hugged her tightly, a small smile on his face.
"Randhir, why didn't you just tell me all of this before?" she asked him softly.
He pulled away from her and studied her face before sighing.
"Sanyukta, let me tell you the whole truth about my relationship with Vidhushi."
I know some of you may be a bit angry at me for introducing this twist, but the purpose behind it was to show that Sanyukta would not leave Randhir... even in the most heartbreaking, desperate situations. It was to show Randhir that Sanyukta would stand by him. Anyways, there is a twist to his relationship with Vidhushi, and to show the equation they share, the next chapter will be from Randhir's POV.
Do tell me what you thought of this chapter! I apologize if it seems a little dry, but it was necessary.
Next chapter is written... this fanfic will probably end on chapter 20. =(
