I was faintly intrigued when the promos of the show were aired, but it was only when I spotted Neelesh Misra while switching channels one day, that I decided to watch the show. I am a fan of Neelesh Misra's work. I was a huge fan of his radio show and sometimes, I listen to the Yaad Seher stories uploaded on YouTube. And you feel instant connect because he has SUCH a wonderful voice. And his Hindi is beautiful. Let's just say, as of now, I am watching the show because Neelesh Misra is writing it. 😳

I managed to catch only the first few episodes and I am in love with four things. The poetry, first of all, that is infused into the story. I love its integration with the story-line, but I think I can listen to the poetry on its own without bothering about the story so much. It is SO beautiful. And then there's the beautiful rendition of the poetry. And the fantastic narration. I love Neelesh Misra as thesutradhaar. Thirdly, I love the Lucknow sheher looming in the background, with its galiyas, and its beating heart. It's like the city is a character in itself, observing and smiling, as the two lead characters cross each other's paths again and again.

And mostly, I am in love with Nikumbh Sharma. I love how he thinks of every thing commercial askachra! I may not agree with him but I do so get his disdain for people who sell and call themselves artists, while the artists scramble in the background trying so hard to feed their stomachs without selling or compromising on their art. It makes sense for someone who is into theatre. I love how committed he is to his art, and it clearly makes him very happy. I am not very fond of hate-turned-to-love stories that begin with loud tiffs that do not make sense. But in this case, it wasn't the guy being an arrogant prick and the girl being the loud, screaming fighter that caused the two to clash. Nikumbh does not even dislike Yamini. He holds contempt for her, and for what she calls "art". And that is why he did not hesitate to compliment her work when she did truly impress him. I like him. 😳

Yamini has not impressed me so much, though. For someone who's supposed to be a superstar, she suffers from an amazing lack of confidence. I get her behavior in front of her father, but why does she keep quiet when Nikumbh labels her work as kachra? I don't know. That's how her character's supposed to be, probably, but I find her a little lifeless. And that automatically puts me off a bit. I guess theatre is her true calling and she will come around, but I would also like to see moments when she is just singing to herself, something that's not an item number, without worrying about her father or shows or the media, but simply enjoying her music. I get that she does not like the commercialization of her music, and stage shows make her unhappy, but it makes me a little sad that she cannot find anything in her music that makes her connect.

Anyhow, I hope to see development in Yamini's character.

Till then, I'll be watching this for Nikumbh, and for the poetry, and for Neelesh Misra's fantastic writing and narration.

Your thoughts?
Cheers!

Thank you for putting my thoughts with your wonderful words so succinctly.

Love the poetry and the the city of Lucknow as the background.

Nikhumb is great and I hope Yamini will come out of her shell soon and show that her true love is theatre too.

Lovely post! I pretty much agree with every point you've made :-)

I had no idea who Neelesh Misra was until I started watching this show and then I went and found his youtube channel and looked up info about his stories...I'm starting to become a fan and definitely intend to listen to those stories...in today's times I'm astounded that someone has even managed to keep this medium of storytelling alive on radio...he has a lovely voice and narrative style.

Re: Nikumb...yes I like how his cynicism is portrayed with reason and logic rather than blind hate...he is intrigued by Yamini despite the fact that he despises what she represents for artists like him striving to keep true art alive...there is a bit of a classic pride and prejudice going on b/w them which is not as caricaturish as most love stories so I do like that.

Re: Yamini...again I totally agree...she's remarkably LIFELESS as you pointed out...I don't see the star quality...I see an awkward teenager...It seems she's more comfortable playing the scared daughter or pouting over her squabbles with Nikumb...I feel like their clashes only leave her sounding clueless and silly and Nikumb ends up emerging the more intelligent and impressive one...the writers should take care to balance out their interactions and so should the actress playing Yamini.

What I got from her character is that Yamini does like singing but has somewhere lost the love for it in all the forced commercialization she's been put through so now she's exploring theater...I feel like ultimately they will end up putting on some kind of musical play only...but they really need to put more SPARK in her character rather than just showing her as frightened or awkward most of the time.

Nice Post.
I'm in love with Nikumbh too. He is a fair minded person. He doesn't blindly hate for no reason, isn't a total downer, cynical yet idealistic, is fair as well as strict.

It's no wonder why Yamini will fall head over heels with him.

As for Yamini, the reason she doesn't protest much is that she somehow agrees with him or knows what he's saying is true. She initially responded back to him, that the work he considers so degrading, they put a lot of effort and work into it. But to his question she had no answer. And see the performance of hers which to which both Nikumbh and we the viewers were introduced. With her singing to a Bollywood item number as is. (In fact, even though this is probably not what was intended by the show, I view it as Yamini herself is lip synching in that performance, not just the actress playing Yamini.)

Absolutely. I am a fan of his voice. And all of the stories that he narrates remind you of lost times, simple times when grandparents used to narrate stories to the kids. Now, of course, every thing is becoming so digital. And the short story genre is pretty much dying, I think.

Yamini certainly piques his interest. But yeah, like you pointed out, the cynicism has backing. And with Yamini never saying so much as a word of protest, who's there to challenge his views?

Exactly. In the very first episode, Nikumbh insulted her and her work downright and she just ended up looking clueless! That was so weird since Yamini is supposed to be her star. Even if Nikumbh had a point, she should have said something befitting that of a star! I don't know if it's the acting or the character, but I would like to see some confidence in her portrayal.

A musical sounds good. But I would like to see her rediscovering her love for music. Not the Anarkali disco chali type of music. But the music that comes straight from the heart and thus, connects.

It's clear she does not enjoy singing to Bollywood numbers or at stage shows or anything for money. And yes, she had no answer to his question. Nikumbh had a point. My problem is not that she considered the truth in his words. My problem is that, at that moment, she had nothing substantial to say, and that's odd coming from a star! It is a question of self respect. something that Yamini lacks majorly. And that is why she is so low on confidence.

Ditto about the lip synching part. She looked exhausted and mega unhappy to me, frankly, to really put an effort at singing live. And they need to stop playing original tracks when it's the character who is supposed to be singing. It sounds out of place and odd. Why can't they ever record and play original songs, not necessarily sung by the actor. but original?

Yes, he brings back memories of a time when as kids we would be awed by the stories of kings, queens, princes, princesses from our grandparents...that whole culture of stories as a medium of fueling the imagination seems so lost otherwise sadly.

Even if Nikumbh had a point, she should have said something befitting that of a star! I don't know if it's the acting or the character, but I would like to see some confidence in her portrayal. Well she kinda did retort back about how the work they do is so hard and if he himself had to stand on stage in front of so many ppl, he wouldn't be able to get a word out...but in general she just seems to either pout in frustration around him or just give him somewhat lifeless looks...that is what needs to be fixed IMO...if it can be...or else I just resign myself to this😆...

I do agree with your point that using these typical film item songs on her doesn't help her case either...I wish the makers could stick to developing original songs for her and sticking to one voice to show her singing...there is a major disconnect b/w the Yamini they are trying to show singing item songs and the one cowering around her father...the star quality is missing not just in the character but also the actress and by star I don't mean a glamorous one...I mean someone with screen presence enough to make their presence felt...I see that lacking in this actress.

A musical sounds good. But I would like to see her rediscovering her love for music. Not the Anarkali disco chali type of music. But the music that comes straight from the heart and thus, connects. Oh I'm pretty sure they will address her rediscovering her love for music at some point too...cuz the fact that she sings when she's depressed as a means of expressing herself shows that she does love singing, just needs a new perspective on it.

Nice post & agree with ur points, I'm also in love with Nikumbh, Abhishek is just perfect. And the narration is surely the highlight point of the show! 👍🏼
I didn't knew Neelesh Misra b4 & now I started 2 listen 2 his stories on YT even though I don't understand every words, it's such a pleasure 2 hear his voice. 😃

Well coming 2 his personality & ideas, it's comprehensible in a way why he always objects 2 Yamini. But yes as she told him during the 1st epi what she does is not that easy & it takes a lot of efforts 2.
Coming 2 Yamini, I think she likes singing but it's not her dream 2 be a singer & in a way she lost her passion 4 singing as u said.
I guess she'll find her happiness with theatre & Nikumbh but wonder how far will she go coz if she doesn't fight 4 her dreams, speaks up in front of her father she won't achieve what she really wanna do...
As Vinita, as the story progress we'll see diff shades of Yamini but 4 now she is just a super star, a girl who used 2 love singing, she is scared of deceiving her father & she hides her emotions.

Absolutely. The narrative is the USP of the show.

I even have his book compilation of his stories. And while I enjoyed reading them, I prefer it when he is narrating those stories.

She will, I guess. More than anything, I hope she finds her confidence with theatre. And Nikumbh will probably make sure she gives it everything she has. He is gruelling, like that. 😆
