Well this was bound to happen...I mean she didn't come to live with him permanently.
It's up to Preet to do something to change things now.

Chapter 22 - Moving Out Is Hard To Do

Link to: Table of Contents

A few days later...

Meher passed a surveying glance over her new apartment. The windows needed curtains, the walls a fresh coat of paint, and the entire place could use a really good cleaning. But add to that some plants, simple furniture and a floor rug, and it would be good enough to call home.

Meher quickly jotted down a list of things she needed: a broom, a bucket, some rags and cleaning soap. She checked her watch. It was almost lunch time and she was feeling hungry too. Maybe I'll pick up something to eat along with those cleaning supplies, she decided. She picked up her purse and was about to walk out the door, when she noticed Romeo near an open window. The curious little kitten had spotted a small bird and had walked out onto the ledge preparing to catch its first prey.

"Oh no!" Meher gasped. She quickly walked over to the window and peered outside the glass. The kitten hadn't gotten too far. Perhaps she could still reach him. Meher knew that both of the the living room windows had defective latches on them and needed the help of a wooden stick to stay open. She carefully opened wide the window Romeo had just crawled out of to allow herself through and held onto the window with one hand, while with the other she tried to reach her kitten, but he had walked out beyond her grasp.

"Romeo, come back here or you'll fall", Meher hissed. But the kitten continued stalking its prey.

Just then the kitten lunged towards the bird, which promptly flew away. Meher covered her mouth with her hand as she saw her kitten lose its footing and slip from the ledge. It meowed for help as it hung on for dear life with its hind legs dangling in the air.

"Oh crap!" cried Meher. She thought fast. She would have to go out on the ledge and get her cat. She had been on a ledge before. How bad could this be? She took a deep breath and climbed out the window, remembering to carefully stick the 6" piece of wood back in place so that the window would remain open. "Hang on Romeo", she said, as she pressed herself against the wall and inched towards her kitten. "I'm coming".

The distance wasn't much and Meher covered it carefully but quickly. She then leaned down and plucked the scared animal from its dangerous position, and made the journey back.

Back at the window, Meher leaned down and coaxed Romeo to pass through the opening. As the kitten jumped from her arm through the window, it accidentally knocked out the small piece of wood that was holding it open.

"No!" screamed Meher as the window came crashing down, and the latch locked into place. She tried with all her might to open the window, but it wouldn't budge. "Oh my God! Oh my God! Please tell me this is not happening! What do I do now? Uff! That stupid cat!"

Meher looked down at the dizzying 12 story distance below and plastered herself against the building's wall in fright. "Meher you idiot! You knew you were afraid of heights, why couldn't you have gotten an apartment on the 1st floor?" she sobbed. "Okay...okay...calm down...and whatever you do don't look down again", she reassured herself. "Maybe the other window will open".

Meanwhile...

Preet was going over some storyboards with Gaurav for their upcoming commercial, when Rishap walked into his office.

"Hey Preet", he laughed, as he turned on the TV. "Your wife's on the local news again".

To Preet's amazement he saw Meher caught in an all too familiar situation...frightened and plastered to a wall outside the ledge of a building. He looked at Gaurav.

"Just go", his friend chuckled.

A short while later...

"Sir, the neighbors are not home, but we've gotten in touch with the building manager". A police officer was giving details to Inspector Khan. "He'll be here shortly with the key to the apartment. We can of course start breaking the door down".

Just then Preet arrived at Meher's building. Inspector Khan spotted him as he exited his car.

"Mr. Juneja", Inspector Khan called out. "What's going on?"

"I'm not sure inspector", sighed Preet, "but if you'll excuse me, I've got a girl I need to pry off a wall".

Preet went straight to Meher's apartment, but found the door locked. He quickly pulled out the spare key, and ran inside just as Inspector Khan and 2 other policemen joined him. Once inside, Preet headed for the window. The latch on the first one he tried to open wouldn't budge. He raced to the other window, and found it in the same condition. He quickly ran to the kitchen and brought back a knife and broke open the latch on one of the windows, then stuck his head outside. Meher was only an arm's length away.

"Meher!" He called out. "Don't worry Meher. I'm here. Everything is going to be alright". But Meher wasn't listening. Her eyes were closed shut and she was breathing in short breaths. As an officer held the window open for him, Preet climbed out and reached for Meher. It wasn't until he took hold of her hand that she turned to look at him.

"Preet", she whispered.

"It's okay", he said offering her a reassuring smile. "Let's just get you back inside".

Preet helped Meher inch back towards the open window, then pulled her back inside after him. As she clung to him and cried her heart out, he motioned to the police to give her 5 minutes before they started asking her for a statement. When she had calmed down, she explained to Preet and Inspector Khan about her efforts to rescue her kitten, and how she had unwittingly got locked out in the process.

"You know Mrs. Juneja, this is really becoming a bad habit with you", chuckled Inspector Khan. "Now I must warn you. No more heroics. Please! I can understand your love for a pet, but to put your life in danger like that is just not acceptable. I hate to sound crude, but pets you can replace, humans you can't. Imagine what your husband would have had to go through if something had happened to you".

Meher glanced over at Preet apologetically.

"Um...I'm sure Meher is very sorry for the trouble she caused", said Preet. "And I'm certain she'll make sure it doesn't happen again. Won't you Meher?"

Meher nodded quietly.

"And I'm so sorry you had to come out here", continued Preet.

"Just doing my job", smiled Inspector Khan, as Preet walked him and his officers to the door. "But Mr. Juneja, you really should get those windows fixed immediately. You guys are such a nice couple, I'd hate for anything to happen to either one of you".

Preet closed the door, then walked back to where Meher stood leaning against the wall. "You're going to drive me crazy one of these days you know that", he said, as he passed his hand over his face.

"What? You were behaving so nicely to me in front of the police and as soon as they're gone you get all upset", said Meher.

"Well don't you think I have a right to be just a little bit upset?" said Preet. "I can't believe you put your life in danger for a stupid cat!"

"It's not a stupid cat. And so did you...remember?" countered Meher.

"Meher, there is a hell of a difference between climbing a tree and being 12 stories in the air!" cried Preet. "You could have fallen!"

"So could have Romeo", said Meher.

"Meher he's a cat. Cats always land on their feet!" said Preet.

"Even from 12 stories up?" asked Meher.

"You're impossible you know that!" said Preet. "All you care about is Romeo! Inspector Khan was right! You didn't even once stop and think about me!"

"About you?" asked Meher.

"I told you this living on your own thing was a bad idea! What if no one had gotten here in time? What if you had gotten hurt? What if I had lost you!?" Preet blurted out.

Meher looked up at Preet in surprise. There was an awkward moment of silence, before he changed his expression into a frown and turned his back towards her with his arms folded.

Meher walked up to him and held her ears. "I'm sorry Preet", she whispered. Preet tried his best to ignore her, but she continued to tug at his arms forcing him to release them from his fold, then placed her head on his chest and hugged him. "I'm really sorry", she said again.

Preet shook his head and brought his arms around her in a tight embrace. "What am I going to do with you Meher Maan?" he sighed.

A few days later...

"Ugh!" cried Meher, as she walked into her new apartment and nearly slammed the door on Preet's face.

"Meher I said I was sorry", said Preet, as he cautiously entered the place.

Gaurav and Sam looked up from their positions. They had come over to help Meher fix and paint her apartment. Preet had taken her to buy some paint, but seeing them return empty handed, they immediately sensed something was wrong.

"What took you guys so long?" asked Gaurav. "And where's the paint?"

"I didn't get any paint Gaurav Bhaiya!" cried Meher, as she slouched in a small chair, and held her head in her hand. "In fact I didn't get anything, except an entire morning worth of wasted time and a headache!"

"What did you do Preet?" asked Sam.

"Hey! Why does everyone automatically assume I'm guilty?" protested Preet.

"I'll tell you what he did!" Meher spoke up. "I told him to take me to the local hardware store to pick up some paint...but he insisted on going all the way to the other side of town to the big department store, claiming we could pick up a whole bunch of things all in one place. I said fine. So we finally get there and while I go look at towels, he runs over to housewares and sets all the alarm clocks to go off at 5 minute intervals. I go look for a blanket and he's over in sporting goods setting up a tent. Then he tells the kid shoppers there that he'll give them each a candy bar if they'd bring him pillows or blankets from the bedding department. Ten kids not only obliged, they joined him in the tent! And I spent the next hour trying to match 10 very angry and semi-frantic sets of parents with their missing children. In another section there was a family of mannequins in the display window and he pulled all of their pants down!"

"Preet! You didn't!" laughed Gaurav.

"He did!" Meher continued. "And while I'm busy looking at colored cards to find the right paint, Mr. Looney Tunes here is being carted away by security! They were watching all of his stupid antics via surveillance cameras, and finally caught up to him in the automotive department while he was trying on different sizes of funnels".

"Funnels?" said Sam. "I'm almost afraid to ask".

"He told them he was practicing his Madonna look!" explained Meher. "They threw us out and warned us never to come back! It was so humiliating!"

"Look I said I was sorry", said Preet.

"Sorry?!" cried Meher.

"Yeah...and I guess since this place is still not ready, you'll just have to come back home with me tonight", offered Preet.

"Ugh!" Meher cried as she rolled her eyes and slouched back in her chair.

"Gaurav", whispered Sam. "That boy has some serious personal issues rolling around in his head. I think you should have a conversation with him".

"Sam, guys do not have conversations about personal issues", said Gaurav.

"But you're his friend. You talk to him all the time", insisted Sam.

"Yeah...about work, the weather or sports, but not personal issues", said Guarav. "We've never really done anything along those lines other than hit each other on the shoulder and say...Hey...what's up?"

"Alright then go hit him with something and in the meantime I'll try and calm Meher down", said Sam.

Gaurav shrugged his shoulders and walked over to Preet. "Hey buddy", he said. "May I please see you in the kitchen for a minute?"

"Sure", said Preet as he followed his friend. "What's up?

"Okay...how should I begin? Are you crazy or something?!" asked Gaurav. "What did you do all that for?!"

"I don't know. I hate shopping. I guess I got bored", said Preet.

"Nice try", said Gaurav. "But I know you a little better than that Preet. You just don't want to let her go do you?"

"Let who go?" Preet asked innocently.

"Meher", whispered Gaurav.

"I...I have no idea what you're talking about", insisted Preet.

Gaurav glared at Preet.

"Alright fine, I admit it", said Preet. "I don't want her moving out, but it's for her own good. I mean...what if she winds up on the window ledge again?"

"Man you really have the L word bad don't you?" Gaurav said, as he playfully punched his friend on the arm.

"The L word?" said Preet.

"Don't play dumb with me Preet. You know what I'm talking about. Four letter word...begins with L ends with E", said Gaurav.

"You think I have lice?" asked Preet.

Gaurav shook his head and was about to say something, when Sam walked up to him.

"Gaurav, we're not going to be able to do much here if we don't get some paint", said Sam. "How about if we go pick some up along with something to eat? I'm starved. In the meantime these 2 can sort things out".

"That sounds like a good idea", said Gaurav.

A shortwhile later...

"Meher how long is this silent treatment going to last?" asked Preet as he followed her around, while she swept the apartment.

Meher only glared at him in return. 10 minutes, she fumed in her head. I haven't spoken to him for only 10 minutes and he's driving me nuts!

"I said I was sorry", pleaded Preet. "I promise it won't ever happen again. Dharti Ma ki kasam".

"You better believe it won't happen!" said Meher. "Because I am never going to go shopping with you again!"

Meher put her broom away then picked up a chair and placed it before a window. She then picked up a curtain she had strung onto a rod and climbed up the chair to hang it up.

"Oh here, let me hold that chair steady for you", offered Preet. "We wouldn't want you slipping and falling, and then me acting all heroic and trying to catch you and throwing my back out in the process now would we? Heh heh..."

Meher got down from the chair and frowned at Preet. "Mazak lag raha tumhe?" she hissed. (You think this is a joke?)

Great going Juneja! Preet scolded himself. He watched Meher pick up a dusting cloth and begin dusting the coffee table. He picked up one and tried to copy her too. He then followed her into the bedroom where she picked up a sheet and began to fit it onto the bed.

"Here, let me help", he offered.

"I can do it myself", replied Meher.

Preet went ahead and tucked in the corners on his side anyway, before following Meher into the bathroom. He watched her step into the shower stall in order to replace the rusty old shower head there, but she was having a hard time reaching all the way.

"Allow me", smiled Preet. He stepped into the small stall with her letting the door swing shut after him.

Meher only frowned at him, but finally relented after he said "Please". She stepped back slightly and watched him apply a little pressure to unscrew the old shower head and then replace it with the new one.

"Piece of cake", Preet smiled, as he leaned back letting his weight rest on the shower handle. It suddenly came off in his hand, while setting off a steady stream of cold water from the shower head he had just installed.

"Ugh!! Turn it off!" cried Meher.

"I can't" said Preet, as he tried to fit the broken handle back in place. "It's no use. It's broken".

Meher tried to open the door of the shower stall but it was jammed. "I don't believe this!" she cried.

"Here let me try", said Preet. He pushed against the door, but it wouldn't budge. "Damn! What is this made of...bullet proof glass?"

"Uff! Yeh sab tumhare saat hi kyun hota hai?" cried Meher. (Why does this always happen with you around?)

Preet watched Meher frown and cross her arms as the cold water hit her face and body. He couldn't think of anything else, so he pushed her into a corner and shielded her with his own body as best as he could. "No point in both of us getting wet", he said giving her a weak smile, through his chattering teeth.

Meher looked up at Preet. His action at that moment was simple but so sweet, that she couldn't help but break out into a smile. "Preet Juneja, I don't know what I'm going to do with you", She said as she brought her arms around him and hugged him.

"I guess that means I'm forgiven", said Preet, as he returned the hug.

Just then Gaurav opened the shower stall's door from outside. "Hi guys!" he grinned. "Interesting way to cool off".

Preet and Meher quickly broke apart. The embarrassment of having been caught like that was evident on their faces.

"I'll...uh... go got get us some towels", said Meher, as she darted out of the bathroom.

"Heh heh. That's another thing we need to have fixed", said Preet, as he exited the shower stall.

Gaurav folded his arms and looked at his friend, with a raised brow.

"What?" Preet asked as innocently as he could, before breaking out into grin and playfully punching Gaurav on his arm.

Later that evening...

Meher thanked Gaurav and Sam for their help and saw them to the door as they left, then came back and joined Preet in the living room. He was quietly munching on a slice of pizza.

"I'm afraid I took the last slice", he said apologetically.

"That's okay", smiled Meher.

"You know you shouldn't have tipped the delivery guy", said Preet. "He was at least a half an hour late. That pizza should have been on the house".

"But Preet, he said he was sorry", said Meher. "And it was his first day on the job. His boss would have been real mad".

"See this is exactly what I'm talking about. You're too nice Meher", said Preet. "How do you know he was telling the truth? You're going to be living on your own now, and you shouldn't let people take advantage of you".

"I'll keep that in mind", smiled Meher. "Um...if you're finished, I'll start clearing up".

"Oh...yeah...", said Preet, as he tossed the crust he was toying with back in the box and wiped his hand on a napkin. "Let me help".

"It's okay Preet, it's just a couple of dishes", said Meher.

"Okay then you wash and I'll dry", he offered.

After the dishes were done, they walked back into the living room. "You want to go for some ice cream?" asked Preet.

"I don't think I have any room left in my stomach", said Meher. "You want coffee?"

"No, I better not", said Preet. "Have to get to work early tomorrow. Speaking of which...I had better get going".

Meher nodded, as she walked him out.

"Well", said Preet lingering at the door. "I guess this is it".

"I guess it is", sighed Meher.

"The place sure looks a lot better", said Preet.

"Yes it does", smiled Meher. "Good enough to spend my first night here. I...uh...couldn't have done it without everyone's help. In fact...I really appreciate everything you've done for me Preet. Thanks".

"You don't have to thank me Meher", said Preet. "I'll always be there for you. Uh...I mean...dosti mein (in friendship)...no sorry...no thank you...or something like that". He turned away from her and raked a hand through his hair, before turning back to face her. "I still can't believe you moved out. I mean...time sure flew by fast".

"It did didn't it?" sighed Meher. "I guess this day was inevitable though. It's probably best this way".

"Best for who?" grumbled Preet.

"Did you say something Preet?" Meher asked.

"Huhn? No...I...uh...", stammered Preet.

"Why do I get the feeling you want to tell me something?" asked Meher, smiling as she met his gaze. His brown eyes flickered back at her with emotions she could not decipher.

Preet swallowed hard. She was smiling so sweetly at him that he couldn't think straight and decided the best thing would be for him to leave. "I better go", he said. He took a step back and opened the door. "Um...Meher?"

"Yes?" she said, still smiling.

"You becareful now", said Preet.

"I will", said Meher.

"I'm only a phone call away", he reminded her.

"I know", said Meher. She smiled back at him once more before closing the door.

I'm only a phone call away? What the hell was that? Why didn't I say anything? Preet scolded himself as he walked to the elevator. Why couldn't he have told her how he really felt? Why had his faculties deserted him, when he should have spoken up? I'll miss you Meher! I wish you hadn't moved out! Oh...and...I love you!
