A girls' hostel is like the lost city of Atlantis to boys - mysterious, inviting and full of the unknown. Well, not anymore. The girls who seem so nice and normal in college and outside throw off their masks once inside familiar territory, aka, their hostels - and we tell you what they really are. These are the 22 typical characters you will find in every Indian girls' hostel.
Godly Girl
These girls have created their private pray-stations on a table corner or on top of their wardrobes - and nothing short of an apocalypse can budge them from their morning and evening aartis.
Studious Snob
Any waking second spent on any other activity other than studying is a sin - and these girls are saints! Fiercely competitive, they have their noses buried inside their books whenever you pop into their room.
TV Hogger
This girl has made her sole mission in life to watch every movie and every soap opera on television - and has a fair share of haters for her habit of hogging the remote control during primetime.
Miss Long Baths
When you share a bathroom, you get 20 minutes tops for brushing, pooping, bathing and washing clothes. But once Miss VIP here enters the bathroom, she is not opening the door for the next hour or so. Oof!
Late Latifa
Deadlines are a non-entity to this spunky thing. She will come back when she wants, not when the gates close. So, of course, a majority of her hostel life includes sneaking back in at late hours.
Guest Appearance
One step ahead is this one, who stays away days on end from the hostel (what excuses she gives to the warden only she knows) - and makes a guest appearance now and then. Probably shacking up with her boyfriend, this one!
Miss Party-All-Night
She is the bad girl the other parents warned their daughters about before leaving home. She will smuggle in daru into the hostel - and get everyone to let their hair down. The life of the hostel, this girl.
Activist Kudi
Most girls grumble about the bad food and the leaking bathroom tap, but this born activist will take the girls' concerns directly to the warden - whether they want her to or not!
Gossip Girl
Yes, we know that all almost girls gossip. But this one puts everyone else to shame. She is the Prasar Bharti of the hostel - and makes it her business to know everybody's business and pass it on ahead.
Freeloading Kamini
If mooching off was a college course, this girl would have been a honors student in it. From toothpaste to food, she 'borrows' every tiny thing - and with such a winning smile, you feel like a bitch saying no.
That Cursed Klepto
Worse is this category which includes every thieving, pilfering character - from those who steal the food from the fridge to the one who filches money from unattended wallets. Everyone knows who you are; they just haven't caught you red-handed yet. Bitch.
Lonely Hipster
The reason for this girl's aloofness might spring from her own introversion or because she carries herself like everyone's dirt. In any case, she bothers no one and nobody bothers her.
Long Distance Girlfriend
At least one girl in the hostel will have a boyfriend from out of town, who will be stuck to her phone every waking minute. Additionally, she has mastered the art of phone whispers - and you cannot tell what she is saying even if you are two feet away from her.
Poor Little Rich Girl
She gets everyone wondering how daddy's little girl ended up in such a proletariat hostel setting. Her fussy airs makes her seem like she should instead be staying in a golden castle with a pink unicorn for her pet.
The Sex Goddess
When it comes to the birds and the bees, this girl has been there, done that. It is her everyone comes to when they need more specific advice than what Cosmopolitan can give.
The Mother Hen
Another agony aunt character, this one caters more to the emotional, rather than erotic, needs of her fellow hostel-mates. She has a good head on her shoulders - and would make a great granny someday.
The Penny Pincher
They learnt the basics of economics while still in the womb - and if she says you owe her 12 rupees 50 paise, you effing owe her 12 rupees 50 paise. "Neither a lender, nor a borrower be"? Hell yeah.
Complaining Nag
This one has a problem with everything that goes down in the hostel - and like thatschoolmate who used to run to the teacher with every complaint, this one does the same with the warden. Also, nobody likes her in the hostel.
The Crybaby
It is as if this girl has inbuilt sprinklers in her eyes - and it is sensitive as a baby's bottom. Every tiny thing sets off her sprinklers, be it something serious as this...

As opposed to #19, this one has an overactive funny bone. Girls do giggle, but not like this one. Weirdly enough, she does not even need any kind of drugs to activate her giggle mode. Everything is funny sober.

Brushing her hair, checking out her pout - this girl's best friend is the mirror itself. She can spend hours in front of it, oblivious to anything else happening around the hostel.
The Perennially Indisposed
It is rude to pick on this one - but there comes a time when you lose patience. Every day of the month, she either has a headache, tummy ache, backache, cold or fever. And that's how she gets everyone else to run errands for her too, that sly vixen!
