Chapter 1:Reflections
Army Intelligence HQ, Mumbai
A tall, lean man sat impatiently on a wooden bench waiting for his name to be called. He picked up a magazine from the glass table in front of him. He paged through it for a minute or so and then irritatedly put it down.
"Captain Amardeep Huda," the receptionist called out. "Finally!" he muttered standing up. Captain Amardeep Huda had everything a patriot could wish for. He had the pleasure of serving his motherland, had participated and succeeded in several important missions along with highly respected army officers and he was a very rich man, which one could not be being in the army.
His late parents had left him a vast fortune and numerous factories in different parts of India. In addition to those, his late uncle had also left him a famous software company in U.S.A. However, Captain Huda hardly spent any of the wealth he had aquired. He had left his bungalow in Haryana and shifted to an appartment in Bombay. He had wanted to distance himself from anything that reminded him of his parents.
He had also gifted his farmer friend his most prized possessions, his faithful buffaloes. He no longer spoke in a Haryanvi accent, he did not make bets nor did he flirt with girls anymore. He was no longer the fun-loving cadet of KMA, he had completely changed.
Presently, he limped across to the reception desk and waited for the receptionist to speak. "The head needs to speak with you. The Colonel's office is on the third floor, second door to your left. Here's your id-card," the receptionist droned in a bored, monotonous voice.
He put the id-card around his neck, grunted thanks and proceeded towards the elevator.
His eyes darted from the polished wooden floor towards the creamy-white walls. One wall showcased pictures of various martyrs, officers chatting, playing chess etc. whereas the other had quotes by great men and women who had fought terrible wars for their motherland.
Thoughts raced in his mind,"Oh no!I have to face General Chandra. With that man you really don't know what's coming, praise or a reprimand! Always screws up that face at me, narrows those bulging eyes of his and scares the daylights out of me!"
"But wait!" he thought cunningly, "did the receptionist just say Colonel? Whoo hoo, that means Tau's been demoted!" He suddenly realized he had used the word 'tau'.He frowned at the thought at pressed the elevator button.
The golden door opened to reveal a wooden-faced Oderly staring at him with a blank expression on his face. The Captain got in and pressed the button '2'. The Orderly looked at him and thought, "He looks more like a gangster than an officer."
Huda had been on the Ladakh border for the past one month. The intense cold and his lack of personal hygiene had made him lose the charm he had. His longish black hair fell on his forehead and covered a part of his bloodshot, tired eyes. His once-handsome face was now masked by a beard.
And a recent gun-shot on his left leg had made him temporarily disabled, because of which he needed to carry a walking-stick. The elevator reached the second floor. Captain Huda stepped out, leaving the dumb orderly still staring at him.
"A change in rank, a change in room," he muttered to himself as he raised his hand to knock at the mahogany door. But before he could knock, the door was opened by two Orderlies carrying a wooden crate. He stepped inside a beautiful room and thought to himself, "He's done a good job with this one. His previous office was such a glum-looking place!"
He began to examine a small glass dolphin on the his senior's table as a hand tapped his shoulder. "May I help you?" a soft voice asked. Captain Huda turned around to see a man smiling at him.
His expressions changed from fright to amazement and finally to ecstasy as he almost yelled, "You!"
