Chapter 6: Getting ready

Colonel Rajveer paged through the inflight magazine in the pouch on the back of the seat ahead of him. He massaged his aching head caused due to a baby in the next seat wailing at the top of her voice. Reading made it throb even more. Irritatedly, he put it back in the pouch.

Rajveer was on the flight to Nainital. He had some work there, but was also planning to attend Alekh's child's naming ceremony. "Why can't they feed that baby something?" he muttered as the infant's parents tried to console her.

"Attention all passengers, we will be approaching Nainital soon. Please make the back of your seats upright and fasten your seatbelts. We would also like to inform you..." the annonucement went on, but the Colonel did not bother to listen. Straightening his tie and smoothing his hair, he settled back in his already upright seat, belt fastened waiting for the plane to land.

The airplane zoomed slightly down, but Rajveer had already begun to feel uncomfortable. He sharply breathed in and stuffed cotton into his ears. There was no time to do anything at the airport, he had to rush to Alekh's house immediately. "Oh, brother," he muttered as the plane dipped further.
************
There, Naina was stroking her hair, lost in her thoughts. "Alekh rang up and told me he was coming," she thought,"Oh why did he have to do so? How will I face him after that incident in the hospital. How will I pretend that I still hate him? Oh, what can I do?" She thought sorrowfully as she realized there were only fifteen minutes for the ceremony to begin.

She jumped about in one sandal and picked up her goddaughter's gift. She ran outside and jumped into her car, shutting the door.

Chapter 7: The guests arrive

"Wow, what a wonderful job they have done with the house!" Colonel Rajveer exclaimed as he looked around a spacious hall with a wooden flooring, velvet curtains hiding solid French windows, mahogany furniture, wooden drawers containing glass showpieces and a big bookshelf.

Rajveer was the first to arrive at Aashna's naming ceremony. Presently, he was alone in the hall because the couple was busy getting Aashna ready. Rajveer turned as the main door opened revealing his friend, Major Abhimanyu Rai Chauhan holding a present wrapped in glittery blue paper.

"Hey, I didn't know you were coming, Raj!" Abhimanyu said ecstatically as he hugged Rajveer.
"I had no idea too."
"So, how are you my friend?"
"Absolutely fine, Chauhan sahab.
"You won't drop the sahab will you?"
"Nah!" Rajveer laughed, punching Abhimanyu's arm.

At that moment, Alekh walked into the hall. Dressed in a black tuxedo and leather boots, he smiled at his two ex-professors.
"Hello Abhimanyu Sir, great to see you again!"
"Ah, great to see you too Alekh! My, you look so different. A male Cinderella, are you? From a crude prisoner to a suave, sophisticated Captain!" Abhimanyu said, handing over the present to Alekh.
"Oh, no. This is not the first time, Abhi. He had worn a formal outfit at the Fresher's Ball, when he had met Neelu for the first time, right?"

Just as Rajveer spoke her name, Neelu entered the hall. Like her husband, she too was dressed in black. She was dressed in a black, full-sleeved, knee-length gown. She beamed at Rajveer and Abhimanyu as she wheeled a trolley having a small baby girl, fast asleep in it.

"Oh, she is just so adorable!" Abhimanyu said as he bent down over Aashna. She turned to one side and smiled, as though having heard or understood the words. "I thought you planned on naming her Naina," Abhimanyu spoke, "What made you change your mind?"

"We felt the name suited her better. Aashna-identity, pehchaan," Neelu said as her bottom lip quivered. Alekh comforted her as Abhimanyu turned around, expecting to see his friend behind him. But Rajveer had ambled towards the balcony.

Abhimanyu excused himself and walked towards Rajveer. "Raj, did you get upset on hearing Naina's name?"

"No, what gave you that idea?"

"Well...listen Rajveer, Naina had forgiven you a long time ago. She just didn't have the courage to face you. But believe me, that day in the hospital, she was concerned about you. Every now and then, she kept glancing at you. When she was attending to me, I knew she wanted to be beside you, looking after you. You are her mentor Raj, she has always respected you."

Rajveer was spared from responding because the door opened once again. But, his spirits were lifted when he heard Abhimanyu's words. Now, slightly cheerfully, he thought, "Nobody except me is bothering to ring the bell. Jaise aao, jaao ghar tumhara."

It was Yudi. Abhimanyu ran forward to greet him and Rajveer followed suit. "Good evening Sirs, great to see you after so long!" "Same here," Rajveer and Abhimanyu chorused. "How are you Neelu?" Yudi asked hugging his sister. "Absolutely fine, bro." she replied.

"Alekh?" Yudi asked. "The same as my wife!" Alekh replied. "Don't you ever miss speaking in your old tapori lingo?" Yudi asked playfully. "Absolutely not!" Neelu said as Alekh glared at her. She glared back with the same intensity as Alekh said, "Pure torture, I say. Neelu taught me English lessons for two hours a day along with linguaphone classes and made me watch watch those firangi movies."

The three men laughed along with the couple. "And how's my sweetie pie?" Yudi asked tickling Aashna's chubby, fair cheek. For the next few minutes, the doorbell kept ringing and the guests entered in two's and three's.

"It's time to start the ceremony, where is Naina?" Alekh asked worriedly. "I hope she's all right," Neelu said, "Oh! it's begun to rain." It poured as the guests chatted and had drinks inside the Sharma household. After what seemed like eternity, the bell finally rang.

Rajveer and Abhimanyu, who were in the pool room, did not here it ring. Neelu hurriedly opened the door as Alekh muttered, "Finally!" "Come inside quickly, dear!" Neelu said wrapping a towel around a rain soaked young lady, wearing a brown skirt, a white shirt covered by a sequined, brown semi-jacket trembling fiercely, clutching a big present under her arm.
